2018 Model 3 --- any "gremlins"? looking to buy used!

We got our LR RWD in July 2018 and the car has been ridiculously solid. Had one of the front fog lights conk out about a month in, but Mobile Service came by and swapped in a new unit. Other than that, our only service has been tire rotations.

I absolutely Love driving my Tesla

It's kind of perverted to sit there and think, "do I need to run any errands...?" And then get excited when the answer is "Yes"! I tell friends that I love my Model 3 more than life itself. Just so damn clean, quiet... and downright FUN. (Note: mine is just a LR RWD!)

Tesla Model 3 in New Zealand

My wife and I were in NZ earlier this year and did a lot of driving ... all the while I was wishing I was driving my 3 because they "upgraded" me to a hulking, fuel-guzzling SUV. Not fun on the relatively narrow roads and one-lane bridges! The cool part was driving from Christchurch to...

Tesla Model 3 in New Zealand

It's just hard to judge the clearance over there for some reason. I've started looking in the side view mirror to see where the curb (kerb in NZ?) Is relative to the car and haven't done it in a while.

    Model 3 vs Deer

Yow. A friend's wife hit a deer in her 3 a couple of months ago and must have hit it at a much higher speed -- her front end was seriously messed up, frunk lid flipped up -- I don't think it was driveable. Took about 7 weeks to get all the parts in. Glad you're OK. I figured the deer was...

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

I got this one, which is very similar: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ISPD5A0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It worked well. And I love my roof racks -- no noticeable difference in efficiency with it installed.

25 minute hold for emergency roadside service

It's a shame Tesla laid off all those employees recently... they could use a few extra customer service people. Last July, right after we got our Model 3 we took it on a road trip to Montreal. After taking the Lake Express ferry across Lake Michigan the nav system was stuck, thinking we were...

    Galaxy Tab A As Key?

My wife has a Samsung Galaxy Tab A (small form factor tablet, model SM-T280) that she has at all times, and it's Android powered so I figured it'd be a perfect key for our Model 3. But for some reason it doesn't even see the car in the Bluetooth pairing... nor does it see my Galaxy S9... it does...

Emergency Lane Departure - False Positives

I just wrote [email protected] and complained and told them I want to be able to turn ELDA off permanently. Please do the same. This is an unacceptable "feature".

    Sentry Cam Corrupted File Recovered!

Thanks @Sherlo -- Sure enough, SavedClips had several folders in it -- First has the lady getting something out of her back seat; a couple of folders with other clips while parked; and a folder where the last clips are footage of me walking up to the car when I returned. Cool. I only started...

    Sentry Cam Corrupted File Recovered!

So, I was parked today for about a half hour, when I came back there was a message on the screen that two Sentry Mode events happened. Where are these stored? I looked through the clips during my parked period and think I see what it thought was suspicious (lady parked in front of me getting...

Emergency Lane Departure - False Positives

What really annoys me is, after she reported the car trying to steer itself the other day, I confidently went out and turned the damn thing off, and told her it wouldn't be a problem any more. Here's my thinking: When it happened the other day it was when an oncoming car in the other lane...

Emergency Lane Departure - False Positives

My wife just came home from a trip to the hairdresser and she was visibly shaking. She came home on some 2-lane roads and she said she lost count at 12 false-positive corrections. And when a doe ran across the road in front of her (she was expecting it), the car did nothing, which is ironic...

Emergency Lane Departure - False Positives

My wife had it happen today. Scared the heck out of her; there was no reason for it, she was on a curve with a car coming the opposite direction in the other lane, and the car must have thought she was heading for it, beeped, braked and steered right. The feature was on by default but has now...

Tesla Autonomy Day is on Mon, April 22nd

How many cars are they making per week just at Fremont? Over 7000, right? In a year, that's around 360,000. With China's factory up and running at similar numbers, that's around 720,000 in a year. With the cars on the road now, by the end of 2020 they could have well over a million vehicles...

On mine at least, the rubber footpads don't even touch the glass when they're tight.

Model 3 - The Amazing, the not-so-amazing and the ugly!

Interesting. We listen to Slacker all the time and I've been amazed at the selection of 1970s songs (my wife has commented on several occasions that she lived through the 70s and doesn't recognize most of the songs!) Maybe other genres are different.

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

Got my rack installed tonight, took about 25 minutes. Having all the discussion about installation made the job go super fast. The rubber strips in the channel seem very flexible so I don't anticipate any problems installing the mounting bolts for my tandem bike rack, which I'm going to try out...

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

My thinking is that the original clips (the shorter ones) were properly annealed and are likely OK, though shorter than optimum. Then they identified an issue with the threaded stud length and in the process of altering the way they were made, someone slipped up and they weren't annealed...

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

They should show up pretty quickly -- I never got a shipping notice, but the new clips arrived about 5 minutes ago. Same silver clips as @outdoors. Shipped from Yakima, so that definitely answers the question of who is making these.

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

Holy smokes! I just got the email from Tesla about the replacement clips! OK, I have to admit this situation had me feeling pretty badly about Tesla's competence, but it seems like they are actually on top of this situation. A good thing because this could have been an incredibly BAD THING...

What procedure are you using for annealing? I have a programmable kiln and can anneal mine if I know temperatures and times (I haven't gotten any notice from Yakima). Thanks!

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

Do these have any kind of serial number on them? That may help with identifying problematic units. I haven't opened my box yet but will this weekend.

I'm hoping they'll just ship replacement hooks that have been properly engineered. Fingers crossed.

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

Something tells me that someone messed up on the production of these, maybe in the hardening of the J-bolts, when welding on the threaded studs or maybe when spec-ing the material itself. I'm assuming they're snapping due to tensile stress since some of them are snapping long after they were...

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

Yow. When these break, the hook part of the clip is pretty far down in the channel between the glass and the car frame -- how hard is it to get the broken piece out? [Edit] actually, from the photos it looks like the actual break is above the channel, so maybe that's not a concern. But this...

Defective battery, Rude Service Center - Lemon Law time

Just an additional data point re: other high-end service: A friend of mine was a BMW mechanic at a dealership in New York for a time. He did a good job troubleshooting and fixing cars, but at one point his manager took him aside and told him he wasn't "replacing enough parts". Dandy. So far...

TESLA Headed for Lack of Cash Again?

Well, considering that they have said that the Model Y shares ~70% of the Model 3's components (presumably the entire battery, drive system and much of the chassis), this is a much lighter lift than tooling up for the Model 3 was -- I definitely don't think we'll see the kind of production hell...

TESLA Headed for Lack of Cash Again?

I wish I could find the chart on this (I'll keep looking) -- a while back someone on the forums posted a really informative graph that showed Tesla's historical cash flow from the start, and it was very interesting. Negative cash flow as they were developing the S, then a brief positive cash...

Defective battery, Rude Service Center - Lemon Law time

It doesn't mention slower supercharging, but I wonder if the issue in this technical service bulletin might apply to your car: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10148848-9999.pdf Not a battery expert, but if part of the cells aren't connected properly as mentioned in this bulletin...

Are your aero covers marring your wheels?

Odd. I expected the marring to be where they clip onto the spokes. No marring here, though I like my aero covers better than the stock wheels and they stay on all the time.

Is it safe to street park a model 3 in the 400 block of Balboa St. in SF overnight?

Seriously, I'd go Rent-A-Wreck place and rent some old POS if I had to go anywhere in the SF area and park overnight on the street. Cheaper than replacing windows -- it's like a plague there.

    1200 Miles of Pure Joy!

9197 miles of unbridled joy here with our silver metallic LR. I'm continually trying to come up with excuses to run to the store for some little item we forgot, etc. -- that car is, hands, down, the most fun vehicle I've ever owned. My wife loves it, too. Now, if only Tesla made a car the...

My guess is the Tesla one is the only one that will have the proper attachment hardware, unless Yakima is offering one specifically for the Model 3.

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

There was some chatter a while back that Yakima was working with Tesla to design and build the roof rack for the 3, so I'm hopeful the crossbars are the same as Yakima's Whispbars. I think my strategy will be to first see if I can get some T-bolts and figure out how to mount my carrier with...

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

Well, I looked into what Yakima has to offer and found these: MightyMount 32H Set of 4 | Yakima These are apparently designed to adapt Yakima's round- or square-bar items to fit the aero bars, and look like this: If this will fit the Tesla aero bars, I think this is exactly what I need...

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

@sroh So, my Thule tandem bike carrier is set up to use a Thule SquareBar, with straps that bolt to flanges on the side of the carrier... looks like the top of the Tesla rack has a little curve to it... is there some sort of matching curve on the bottom of your ski rack clamp that matches that...

Model 3 Performance Battery Degradation One Month (Story)

I've just found this topic and was catching up -- I may have missed it, but I'm not sure if anyone mentioned the possibility that the original poster's problem might have been caused by the battery manufacturing issue mentioned in one of the Tesla technical service notices -- the one about the...

    Rear window with defroster on

I first noticed this on a road trip last fall. I was cruising along the highway and noticed that the rear view looked funny... wavy parallel to the heater wires. It hadn't looked like that before so I looked down at the screen and saw that somehow I had activated the rear defroster. Turned it...

M3 Roof Rack Back in Stock!

Quick question: Does anyone know if the T-slots on the Tesla rack are 20x20 or 24x30mm? My Thule tandem bike carrier will need to be modified to mount on it and I'll need to know which type it is.
  49. TomHudson

How do you rotate tires on tesla?

Interesting discussion. One thing I haven't noticed being discussed is: when rotating, what do you do about TPMS sensors? I've never had a car with them before and I've seen occasional comments online about the car getting confused about which wheel is which after a rotation. I paid for the $75...
