Supercharger - Madras, OR (LIVE Jul 2022, 8 V3 stalls)

Oh yeah! I was in John Day 5 years ago for the solar eclipse (my first road trip in my brand new X). Did a bunch of National Parks on the way from the Bay Area to Mount St Helens and Portland. I could charge in Bend and get to John Day. But not enough juice to get to The Dalles supercharger. No...

    Windshield stress crack Model X

I did have a real stress fracture that started at the edge of the window where it meets the hood area. It was below the area of the window that would have been exposed to rocks or chips so it was pretty clear where it started. Tesla did replace my window under warranty (third party changed it at...

Supercharger - Cupertino, CA - Stevens Creek Blvd (LIVE 17 Nov 2020, 28 V3 stalls)

I don't think the Apple campus causes any additional load on chargers. There's ample (and free) charging available for all Apple employees on campus. Even the Apple visitor center next to the campus has quite a few (20+) Chargepoint level 2 chargers available. And they're free for everyone. I've...

    How reliable is model x?

May 2017 Model X. After 2 years, I had to get the front windshield replaced under warranty because of a stress fracture. Was done in my work parking lot. That's it for 3 years and 30000 miles. And next service I might have the yellow border around the display fixed. But that's purely cosmetic.

    Supercharger - San Luis Obispo, CA (LIVE 5 May 2018, expanded May 2020, 14 V2 + 4 V3 stalls)

Don't think it's common but I have seen it and it makes a lot of sense for the places where I saw them. Like Santana Row shopping center in San Jose. For these large shopping centers, our cars just charge too fast and you need to run back and re-park the car by the time you've barely seen the...

What would make you buy a non Tesla electric vehicle?

For the same price or better, it would need to have: 1) an at least 150kW charging network with the same or better density than the Supercharger network 2) as good self-driving 3) same or better range 4) over-the-air updates 5) same or better safety, driving experience, road handling 6) modern...

    Recent windshield replace by anyone?

About 2 months ago, I had my windshield replaced under warranty because of a stress fracture (2017 X). The Sunnyvale SC just had a 3rd party come to my work and to the replacement right there in the parking lot. Very convenient. No camera calibration needed.

    2019.20.1

Just got update 2019.20.1 9973c22 this morning. 2017 Model X100D, AP2.0. On the S forum, people mention the improved Dog mode but they do not see the Lock Confirmation Sound.

    Software Update 2019.20.x

Also received it this morning. 2017 X100D AP2.0. Two new items in the release notes: - The previously mentioned Dog mode improvement - Lock Confirmation Sounds. The car can now emit a sound to confirm the car is locked/unlocked or failing to lock because a door is open. Just tried it out it...

    Glass cleaning recommendations

A couple of months ago, some smudges started showing up on my front window. It's not clear whether it happened after a visit to the Service Center or a hand wash-only carwash. Some look like sharply delineated horizontal lines, some are a bunch of small spots and other areas look like soapy...

Larger battery size around the corner?

I don't think those things would help much. Electrical motors are already extremely efficient (with % efficiency in the mid 90's). So, with heroic efforts, you might go from 95 to 98% but that's rather immaterial. Electric motor design is now focused on making them cheaper to manufacture, use...

Traveling Across the Sierras and through Yosemite: Planning Charging and Energy Usage

Just did a 4 day weekend in Mammoth, leaving from Sunnyvale in the Bay Area. We have an X100D. Left at 90%, charged in Groveland, hiked to Lembert Dome in Tuolumne Meadows and then drove to Mammoth. Charged in Mammoth. Next day hiked to Rainbow Falls and Devils Postpile and visited the Minaret...

    New Nav trip planner behavior

Yes, I saw that too. Yesterday, I set a course from the Southbay to Los Angeles just to show a neighbor. I have an X100D and there used to be at least 2 stops. Now there's one in Kettleman City with barely 5% left. And arriving at the destination with 3% left. That's cutting it a bit too close...

Supercharge speed for model X 100D at Cupertino, CA

Cupertino is a very busy station so you were highly likely sharing one transformer with another car. As previously mentioned, check if you have a full pair to yourself. This mainly is a problem in the Bay Area where there are so many Teslas. For long distance trips, it has never been a problem...

Opening charging port when vehicle is locked

Oops, I misunderstood. When I saw "mobile" I immediately thought "mobile phone" and did not read the rest very well. Anyway, I meant that I can open/close the charge port using the app on my phone without unlocking the car. Would be useful if you're away from your car and an acquaintance wants...

Opening charging port when vehicle is locked

Does not seem right. I can open the charge port without unlocking the car. X100D, software 2018.10.4. I'm not aware of any setting for this.

    What are Tesla's Software resources

I don't work for Tesla but have worked with them on hardware-in-the-loop testing and battery test software and I'm currently working on radar and lidar test software for a bunch of different companies. Tesla has a large software development group, trust me! Probably much larger than any other...

    Losing power steering

Yes, I'm braking, going from about 65-70 to around 40 when it happens and then down to 25 for the rest of the turn. I'm not braking hard and the road is dry and in perfect condition so no ABS. The exact location where it happens: 37°19'04.1"N 121°56'23.5"W

    Losing power steering

I can see that. But I've gone over a lot of bumps without any issue. This happened 4 times within 10 meters of the same location while driving 40-60 mph and there are no bumps there. And it happened 2 times after all the power steering electronics were replaced.

    Losing power steering

I was also very surprised by that. The only info they would have had is my location (Sunnyvale, CA), that it was a 100D and AP2 and that my screen name was "Dirk". That last one probably made it easier. It's a very common first name in Belgium (and The Netherlands) but rather rare in the US. Not...

    Losing power steering

Follow on to this story... A couple of days after I posted this, I got a call from Tesla, urging me to make an appointment at the Sunnyvale SC. Wow! Not only is somebody at Tesla reading these posts, they are also responding to them. I was impressed... I gave them the exact time when it happened...

    Full Self-Driving Capability

Totally agree. That's called V2X communication and a bunch of companies are working on the specs and standards. Our company is doing testing of it. Human drivers constantly communicate, explicitly or implicitly. It might be a glance "I've seen you", or a flashing of the headlights "I let you...

    Losing power steering

Twice now, I've lost power steering for a couple of seconds. I'm driving without TACC or AP and going from one highway to another (Southbay: hwy 17 N, going to 280 N). The car made three short beeps but nothing showed up on the dashboard. No red car on the dashboard like with an automatic...

    Model X Road Trips

Yes, did a big (my first...) road trip to the eclipse. Major range anxiety as this was my first big trip and we were going through some of the beaten path areas. I had several "plan B"s worked out too. I had the standard plugs, plus a Chademo plug, plus a very heavy NEMA 14-50 extension cord and...

    Going to the eclipse?

I'll be starting a big road trip next Tuesday. We'll be with 3 cars, our Tesla MX100D and two ICE rentals for 4 couples: friends from my university in Belgium. It's the Big Eclipse Trip and we've been talking about it for 15 years...Several of us have been to eclipses all over the world so we...

    How common is ghosting?

Well, that could be a serial number and the 014900 could be a "batch" number. I don't think we can make any conclusions from this without detailed knowledge of the system or a lot of data points.

    How common is ghosting?

This is the picture from my windshield: But I can't interpret that either.

    HPWC installation research

I have a 2X 200A main panel and the 72A option (did not buy it but the X got delivered with it as it became standard). I had several of the Tesla recommended electricians give me a quote. The required city permit added $500 to the bill. As I live in an Eichler (people in the Bay Area will know...

    Update 17.18.50

I've worked on test systems for "hardware in the loop (HIL)" testing for Tesla and I can categorically state that Tesla does test the crap out of all the software before it gets installed anywhere. There are very extensive regression tests for all the CAN-bus messages going around in the car. In...

    How common is ghosting?

Oh yes. Those are ""very bright point sources" I mentioned I know what a challenge it is to make those windshields. In a former job, I worked on uniformity control of the plastic layers in car safety glass.
  31. D

    How common is ghosting?

My X100D was build mid May, delivery in factory at end of May. No ghosting whatsoever. And I do know exactly what to look for. Even very bright point sources of light have no reflections. I've changed my position up/down/left/right. No change. I cannot see any reflections. I don't understand...

Can you keep the 12V outlets on when the car is off?

Looked at the technical details on their website. All the "energy consumption" numbers they give for all their other refrigerators are in kWh/annum. So per year instead of per day. And that makes a lot more sense. I wonder how long the unit can keep a set temperature plus/minus a couple of...

    Tesla Model X Moments

We had our neighborhood party last weekend. All the neighbors come over to the cul de sac and we have a big potluck. Do this twice a year. Anyway, although nearly everybody knows the car (we live right between Tesla headquarters and the Tesla factory and I probably see at least 5 Teslas just...

    Model X Road Trips

Road trip with the X or use our Prius?? Got my X 100D about 1 month ago and I'm going to have to make a big decision soon about a road trip. I live in the San Francisco area and will go to the total solar eclipse in Eastern Oregon. I've been talking about this trip with my university buddies...

2017 VIN Model X Order and Delivery

Picked up our Tesla X, 100D, PUP, white/ultra white interior at Fremont factory last Saturday (VIN 47xxx). No issues or problems. I was very apprehensive about the windshield ghosting after all the horror stories on this website. I did a night drive the same day and could not see any ghosting...

Can you keep the 12V outlets on when the car is off?

I will need to have constant power on the trunk power outlet too although for a different reason. I want to power astronomy equipment (scope, camera,...) at night so the car needs to be shut down as there can be absolutely no lights coming from the car (no interior lights, screen, running...
