FWIW, I was told this by my service manager when I picked up my 2018 Model 3 after recently getting the HW3 retrofit.

Software is the biggest bottleneck for HW3 retrofits (at least for HW2.5 cars). If the software doesn’t install correctly, Tesla has held cars for two days before the software loads correctly.

In case there was any doubt about the staging area behind Home Depot. I saw “Tesla” written on two of the pallets this afternoon. There’s also now a bunch of plastic PVC conduit and a cutting machine there now too.

It’s Tesla’s software that makes them superior. Their ability to smooth out spikes and instantly keep the grid frequency constant is what makes them special. And I suspect Battery day will reveal Tesla’s imminent ability to make those batteries far more cheaply than anyone else.

I think your overlooking the fact that when Tesla will re-stoke demand when they refreshe the S/X, probably sometime in 2019. That will maintain ASP while also leaping further ahead of the “competition.”
