Model S/X Yoke steering wheel upgrade

What happens when a 200lb body slams into the airbag, though? How do you know the rim of the steering wheel isn't a critical component to supporting the bag from behind? Remove half the wheel and voila you get half the impact resistance as the airbag slides up instead of being held in place. I...

Model S/X Yoke steering wheel upgrade

Do you have that in writing? Or is that your own speculation? Are you familiar with the engineering behind the airbag and how it's supported in a collision? Yeah it's pretty similar but half of it is missing. Is liability the only kind of coverage you carry on a $85k+ car? Think of it as...

Model S/X Yoke steering wheel upgrade

"upgrade" Sounds like a good reason for the insurance company not to cover your damages when they find out after an accident that you only had half a steering wheel installed. Have you verified that the airbag will function properly without the support of the upper part of the steering wheel?

Model 3/Y Yoke Style Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel [hansshow]

You say that as if driving with an inferior interface is some kind of social movement that will leave behind the fuddy-duddies. It's not. You are not on the cusp of some recolution in how people use cars. You're a guy trying to mix up his own recipe of clear cola after seeing some cool kids...

Model 3/Y Yoke Style Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel [hansshow]

Have you tried it in an emergency maneuver? Day-to-day driving is one thing. I could use a pair of pliers and get by. But it's another thing when you're on the brink of losing control of the vehicle. I think it's dangerous to one's self and to other drivers to be on the road with a yoke that's...

Model 3/Y Yoke Style Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel [hansshow]

I have a hard time reconciling those statements. Given that a yoke is demonstrably less effective of a steering instrument as a normal wheel, it is very hard for me to understand why one would elect to make this change for something as minor as increased visibility of the dash and just a...

Model 3/Y Yoke Style Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel [hansshow]

Visibility of what? The top of the dash? What do you need to see there? How short are you?

Good Lord that looks tacky af. All of those aftermarket wheels do.

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

Not that I really needed that confirmation, but it was enough to have me reach out to my advisor to ask them to put my order on hold for a few months. I just can't bring myself to buy a yoke without so much as a test drive. This could very well be the end of my interest in buying Teslas. I plan...

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

He's also a Tesla apologist and, as one of the first 25 owners, not exactly an objective judge. Motortrend, who I trust far more than a first-25 buyer, said: Something as basic as a steering wheel should not take a day or multiple days to get used to. It shouldn't take 5 minutes to get used...

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

The arguments for those moves were clear at the time, though. We knew USB was better. We knew floppies were going to disappear. Sure there are always people who want to cling to the old way as long as possible, and Apple/Jobs pushed that decision up sooner than it might have otherwise happened...

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

This is not a very convincing argument at all. I'm sure I'll get by with it. But what happens when I have to quickly steer around something and I reach for the steering wheel only to find it missing?
  15. L

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

These are terrible comparisons because each one provided a substantial benefit. USB is much faster and easier to configure Floppy disk drives were quickly approaching obsolescence and better alternatives were available Same with CD-Roms Removing infrequently used ports provides opportunity to...

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

No, and as far as I know there is no opportunity to do so other than just buying one. Regardless, I don't need to test it to see that emergency steering is impossible with the yoke:

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

Is anyone else here really struggling with purchasing a new S with the yoke? I ordered the day it was announced. I figured there was no way that the yoke would be the only option, and renderings of a standard wheel had already leaked. Now here we are and I have a delivery appointment ready to...

2021+ Model S LR Delivery Tracking

It was e-mail, though the e-mail did not contain the VIN. My Tesla account shows it though with delivery range of 6/22-6/28. Yes, LR. Service center should be Highland Park, IL.

    Yoke steering confirmed variable-ratio

You've represented my thoughts exactly. I love my 2016 S and I was so looking forward to the next refresh. But I don't think I can do it like this. Even with the round wheel, the loss of stalks might be a deal breaker for me. I think that, if nothing else, eventually an aftermarket wheel will...

Questions for owners of first deliveries of refreshed Model S

The center console appears to be the same ones going in the 3/Y soooooo just those 2.

MY with new console spotted today

I have the exact same problem on a Y that I picked up on Friday. Didn't notice until I got home. Not looking forward to dealing with it now.
  26. L

People are so confused with the door handles

I agree that while the 3/Y handles are not intuitive, the X handles are worse. But at least with the X you can open any door from the MCU. Not so on the 3/Y. And even when you do figure out the 3/Y, they feel really flimsy. I feel like they just need to be much bigger.

How long would you wait to get the redesigned Model S?

I ordered within a few minutes of seeing the refresh. I had been waiting to jump on a new one but couldn't justify the upgrade from my 75D until it would really feel like a new car. I'm really not worried about the normal production issues people complain about. It's a refresh, not a whole new...

Model S range and interior update imminent?

Of all things . . . What the hell are people so antsy about being able to store in their doors? I know this is a common request but I don't get the fervor over it. Don't think I've ever felt like I was missing door storage in my S.

Upgrading a dead MCU1 to MCU2. Cost? Warranty?

If I pay for the upgrade, Tesla gets out of the cost of doing the repair that they would otherwise be responsible for. As silly as it sounds, I don't feel inclined to do them that favor despite the fact that I'm interested in the upgrade anyway. The upgrade would not be a warranty repair...

Upgrading a dead MCU1 to MCU2. Cost? Warranty?

I have a 2016 Model S with a dead MCU1. It died last week after some minor signs of eMMC degredation. This was prior to the warranty extension announcement. At the time I requested that they just upgrade to MCU2 as a fix. I figured if I was going to have to get it fixed I might as well get the...

Tesla cancelled my solar roof order.

I think it's noteworthy that they're doing this. I hadn't heard of them proactively cancelling orders. I guess that means they have no plans to expand very far.

I have confirmed with my service center that my text replies are not being received when sent to the 408 number. "Unable to Charge" Errors Appearing Mysteriously. Is Software to Blame?

"Unable to Charge" Errors Appearing Mysteriously. Is Software to Blame?

Has anyone seen a change with firmware 24.4? My X got the update the other day and it seems to have solved the problem. I haven't tested it thoroughly but I know for sure one charger that was giving it trouble before is fine now. That same charger still gives problems to my S, which is still on...

"Unable to Charge" Errors Appearing Mysteriously. Is Software to Blame?

I don't think it's a high voltage problem. I actually think that it's a problem with fluctuating voltage, and I think in a recent update (perhaps 20.4.2) they made the system much more sensitive to shutting down the charge for certain voltage drops. I watched it with my electrician to get his...

"Unable to Charge" Errors Appearing Mysteriously. Is Software to Blame?

I recently took a road trip in my 2016 Model S 75D. Before leaving for the trip I decided to top off at my office charger, a Clipper Creek 60-amp with a J1772 connector. When I plugged in I noticed an "Unable to Charge" warning on the dash, but it throttled up and started charging anyway. It...

Very uneven tire wear even on dual-motor X. Should I be concerned?

I keep the suspension on low. Alignment was checked at the regular maintenance that was done last summer just before the tires were replaced. I was pretty happy with the 32k miles but they were pretty low then, too. Not *this* low, but low.

Very uneven tire wear even on dual-motor X. Should I be concerned?

I have a 2017 Model X 75D from early 2017. I replaced all four factory tires last year at around 32,500 miles. I used Continental Extreme Contact DW06 as they seemed to be highly-rated. The front tires were backordered so the rear ones got done in June and the front in August. I haven't given...

    Replacing headlight assemblies. DIY friendly?

I saw a video about removing the bumper. I could manage that if getting the headlights out is easy afterward. Yes, you have 1,000 miles. I made the appointment at 50,150. Waited about 2 weeks to get in and now I'm at about 51,250. So no, I can't extend the warranty anymore. Guess I should've...

    Replacing headlight assemblies. DIY friendly?

Hi All - I just took my 2016 (post refresh) Model S to the service center for routine maintenance and unfortunately didn't realize how close I was getting to the 50,000 warranty. I made the appointment at something like 50,150 so none of the other issues I wanted them to look at are covered...

I'm curious about this as well. This is the only option at my local shop in a V speed and XL load rating, and the price isn't bad at all. Under $600.
