Out of warranty concerns about Tesla

What is the deal with everybody being so afraid of Tesla? People talk about this car as if it runs using alien technology taken from Elon's home planet, using unknown hardware and software, the likes of which us "earthlings" have never seen. Having seen the works of this car from stem to stern...

Out of warranty concerns about Tesla

You can actually buy that ethernet cable now, a third party company that makes the CAN diagnostic cables recently came out with the Fakra to ethernet cable. Link is here Still doesn’t fix the mess of getting a Toolbox subscription... come on Tesla

I have an extra ready made cable I could sell you, I bought it but didn't end up using it, PM me if interested.

Exploring the Model S CAN Bus

Tesla techs use the dumbed down Toolbox software to fix/diagnose the car, it's on a totally separate interface (that uses ethernet) rather than CAN, which is different from most auto-tech software. There was a dump of some dbc files floating around a while ago, can't say where.

Exploring the Model S CAN Bus

There already is a company selling adaptors to go from the new Model S to OBDII, here is a link to their webstore. I have one, it's a pretty high quality cable. I think they also sell on Panjo.

How to request new software/firmware features?

Shout loudly into an empty canyon, it will have about as much of an effect as badgering Tesla Service for weeks on end. I used to be part of Tesla's early access program, I gave them lots of good reliable feedback from an engineering perspective and yet I received NOTHING in return, not even an...

Out of warranty concerns about Tesla

Bootleggers and moonshine peddlers?! Are you calling anyone who has ever installed an aftermarket stereo or LED lighting Al Capone? That seems a bit far fetched. Yes, I agree, many less than scrupulous people do shady things with cars but then again that is human nature, Tesla being cagey won't...

Out of warranty concerns about Tesla

Holy smokes! There is so much horse manure and misinformation in this post I don't know where to start. Aside, from the dramatic irony that for someone complaining about the FUD surrounding electric cars, your post happens to contain gobs of out of context fear mongering WIRED articles about...

How does an Electric Car work ?

Really nice video describing how an electric car (using a MS as an example) works from a high level engineering standpoint. Really good primer for the new players here, I see lots of technical questions and sadly tons misinformation about how pressing the "go" pedal makes the "wheee" happen...

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

If you know a little python I would highly suggest the CANtact it's about $60 and can be found at cantact.io, I also have scripts on Github that I wrote for logging. If you want something more plug and play (but a bit pricey) than the CANdue from EVTV works well and has a companion GUI app for...

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

I can assure you that the MX and MS Powertrain bus are on the same pins, Tesla's own schematics don't lie. I think the issue comes down to the devices you are using. I'm assuming you are aware that in order for the CANM8 to output a pulse it needs to decode the signal that encodes motor RPM or...

    Holster mounting options?

The guns used in the Newtown shooting were legally bought by Lanza's mother and kept without much regard for security in the same house as a child who had known developmental disabilities and a history of mental illness among other issues, that strikes me as somewhat irresponsible. From the same...

    Holster mounting options?

You have posted that same sentence at least three times, yet each time you fail to PROVE or SHOW that my facts are incorrect with regard to child deaths due to gun accidents. I invite you to look at the research and articles linked below, this tragedy is very real and very unfortunate, worse yet...

    Holster mounting options?

Wow, how quickly we went from me suggesting caution and safety to you throwing words in my mouth. Did I say anything about forcing a religion? or removing free speech or the right to repair, all issues that I strongly support. Our founding fathers made very sound choices about letting people...

    Holster mounting options?

Amen brother, I for one would like to own a Panzer tank and SR-71 Blackbird, sadly those nasty folks at those three letter agencies wouldn't look too kindly upon it. (sarcasm for those that can't tell) I really think we need to start considering owning firearms as more of a privilege (since...

    Holster mounting options?

Seems my post has attracted a few dislikes, what exactly people don't like about my post I would love to know. I'm sorry to say but the statistics show a staggering number of children who die or get injured by guns even with education and parental oversight, I'm not blaming anybody on this forum...

Doing a brake job myself help please

Do yourself a favor and either buy or make a pressure bleeder (I took the latter route), it is the tesla recommend way and it works a charm, no need for an assistant to pump the brake pedal in sync with you and you put less wear on the master cylinder. The order is LF-RF-RR-LR for reference...

Doing a brake job myself help please

Chiming in with my two cents, I just completed a front brake rotor swap and brake flush (front brakes were shuddering and fluid was getting old). I can't add much more (on top of the service procedure) other than to say that getting the brake pins out to swap the pads can be a bit fiddly thanks...

    Holster mounting options?

I don't find it surprising at all, I think too many people try to pigeon hole others into a category, which isn't always so easy, "it's complicated" is a reasonable answer but not everybody knows how to deal with it. As an engineer I see a gun as any other precision tool (no much more dangerous...

Activating Tesla's Photochromic Rear View Mirror ?

Just came across this, I think there might be a way to enable the mirror, it looks like it is controlled by the cars LIN bus, like CAN but designed for less critical devices. Might be possible to spoof the command it needs. PM me with an email if you are interested.

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

Better yet, get yourself a Teensy 3.1 (which has a built in CAN controller), slap a transceiver shield on top and you can read the CAN messages for speed or torque (I have those and more) then simply do some audio output with a COTS audio amp and speaker. Though it would be easier to simply...

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

I've covered this in a previous post, both in this thread and others, reposting below: Special note, this is not the pinout for the Model X, although it is similar. The MS has its own dedicated CAN network just for the falcon wing doors. I'll try and find some info on that if I can. 2015 Tesla...

Teen driver re DL test ?

As someone who got his permit in a Model S the day after my mother took delivery (the only car we own by the way) I don't see what the big deal is about. The lady who gave me the test was about as interested in the car as a polar bear in vector calculus. She did cover the backup camera screen...

Using TM-Spy to see Model S data.

Gary, The steering angle is found in the first two bytes with the pattern below: steering position: (b0<<8) + b - 8200 / 10 = degree turned Byte 7 seems to be a CRC check. Bytes 3/4 might be the velocity at which the wheel is being turned i.e. a quick sharp left vs a smooth turn Could you...

Using TM-Spy to see Model S data.

Sorry Gary but that's wrong, I'm using a WiFi enabled V-Gate unit that works perfectly with the TM-Spy iOS app (there is a whole section in the preferences for setting it up). Bluetooth is another story as those units have never worked with the iPhone (until BLE came out)

A College Student Rebuilding a Salvage Tesla Model S

@satoshi <--- This is f-ing hilarious, it's also the reason I hate name dropping and touting qualifications, just because you have a degree and a title (or PE license) doesn’t mean you know how to FEA your way out of a paper bag. So could we have less arguing about the morality of repairing a...

Using TM-Spy to see Model S data.

It is possible, I currently have a V-Link adaptor (mentioned a few posts ago) which when coupled with a flat noodle cable allows me to plug in the TDC and sandwich the cable between the cubby and touchscreen. Since you are trying to measure the 12V battery and the USB ports are powered by it, I...

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

Annnnd... Tesla's Toolbox website is down, including the app, just as I was about to use my hacked together ethernet cable to check things out, rats! as Charlie Brown would say. Anybody else having the same issue?

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

Gary, Yes, it can be done (I know from experience), it's actually not that hard using wget and some special parameters. I used a 24hr subscription because I didn't want to arouse suspicion by hammering their servers with requests every second.

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

As Bob Dylan might say "the times they are a changin", in my mind it's all for the better, after a recent experience with my local service center I came to the conclusion a team of trained circus monkeys could have done a better job (and cheaper!). Now I can check my cars DTC's and related...

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

I would find it strange if they didn't, they would need it for their Toolbox application (which displays the VIN), possibly to verify the supercharger status (though which side does the auth is still up in the air), or a myriad of other uses where it might be handy to have the VIN number present...

Using TM-Spy to see Model S data.

Chassis CAN Logging To ASCII Text Plus Graphing

I managed to figure out a pinout for the new 2015 model S/X connector, still working on a source for the shell and pins but I'm away on holiday at the moment, once I get back I think I will be able to get some information together pretty quickly. For now I hope the pinout helps any adventurous...

Using TM-Spy to see Model S data.

@Chris Thanks for the reminder but I'm well aware of the TDC conversion, I intend on clipping one end off and wiring to suit, your cable is quite chunky which is one of the reasons I'm choosing to go with the flat cable linked above. Also, I can get more TDC pin/sockets from Mouser than you can...

Using TM-Spy to see Model S data.

Just to chime in, I recently ordered some kit off of eBay to facilitate testing of TM-Spy, of course now with this talk of an iOS version being released I'm wondering if I should have bought an Android tablet? (it was actually a good deal in all fairness), is there a timeline for the iOS version...

Chassis CAN Logging To ASCII Text Plus Graphing

I posted a detailed pinout of the new blue connector in the "Let the hacking begin" thread, however, I still am not 100% percent on a part# and supplier. I might just have a MX90 in a few months (someone who is near where I live has just ordered his) he is very keen to do logging and help the...

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

I managed to trace out what the pinout of the new (2015 or so) Model S is, whether this applies to the MX I don't know, still can't access service documents (or a physical car), but I hope this helps for now. 2015 Tesla Diagnostic Connector pinout (connec ref# X437A) 1 = 12V/5A (F219) 2 =...

Exploring the Model S CAN Bus

@Harrod Nope, everything should be pretty similar, depending on the model year of your car though you could have a different connector (Tesla changed it with the new 2015 models) this is currently be discussed on the "hacking the Model S" thread by wk057, however there are plenty of leads on...

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

that four pin cable would be the Ethernet diagnostics port, now bundled with the can bus on the newer cars (starting at something like the 60k vins) there was some extensive discussion on connector sources and pinouts back on page 60 or so.

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

You must be kidding, I just saw that cable on amazon and thought the exact thing to myself, as for the measurements what do you mean by depth? There should be more than enough space for the TDC end of the cable, whether the metal clips will accommodate the thickness of the cable is another...

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

I see, it's just that you spoke with authority about the MX diagnostic connector so I thought you had some inside knowledge, do you have access to a real life MX (a pretty rare object at the moment) that you are tinkering with?

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

Looking at my documentation it seems like they changed the connector reference starting with the 2015 Tesla's (both RHD and LHD), prior to that the connector was referenced as X437, now it's X437A I don't have a new copy of the connector reference but I bet those who do could probably give an...
