This is why you can't get 'rated range'

Sort of. There was an exemption clause in the EPA testing methodology which means EV manufacturers didn't have to test all 5 cycles, instead performing the older 3 cycle test and then just applying a fixed multiplier to the score. (IIRC this was 0.71) Personally I'm not a fan of this because...

US Tesla Wall Connector + 3P3W 240V Delta power - FAIL

I would think this is more down to European electrical safety standards. Typical incoming supply to a property could have the neutral and earth bonded together before the breaker box (and hence GFCI / rcd) but still inside the customer premises. If the incoming supply is damaged the live can...

    Brake disc specs?

@MLAUTO are they the same rear calipers as on the Elise then? If so maybe this could be of interest: Brembo Caliper - TechWiki

    Brake disc specs?

Agree, and this is down to the increased wheel size. The big plus to the V6 Exige (my current car) is tire selection. Yes the brakes are significantly better in terms of fade resistance on track, but the Pirrelli Corsa's that came standard fit on mine are decades ahead of the Yokohama's on my...

    Brake disc specs?

I think that's a listing error on that site. I was more intrigued by the grooving pattern of the M-Tech's. VX220 and Europa are both 5 lugs. (Hence why a lot of times you get to choose on Eliseparts between cars it often says Elise S2 or VX220/Europa)

    Brake disc specs?

Also look for any parts related to the EU only Lotus Europa S. MTEC Do some "C-Hook" rotors. In theory these should be even better in the Roadster application than slotted rotors (being even more aggressive on the pad surface, which helps with wet performance). Brake Discs and Pads for Europa...

Should EVs Make Artificial Sounds at Low Speeds?

@WannabeOwner The more time I spend with the BMW, the more I appreciate the engineering that went into it. The complete re-thinking of the carbon fibre manufacturing techniques that were developed for it's construction are the main headline grabber, but the fitting of the 1.5l 3 cylinder...

Should EVs Make Artificial Sounds at Low Speeds?

I'll bite (as an i8 owner). The fake engine noise is determined by the position of the gear lever, so when not in sport mode it doesn't activate. In comfort mode (the default) a lot of the time you'll be on electric at slow speeds, a bit like in a Prius, be it a Prius with a really big...

    VW will trample tesla

VW are claiming the ID will be comparable to a similarly equipped Golf Diesel in price. So I guess around £30-35k in the UK. For the first round of cars I think it's likely to be pack quantity limited. LG + Samsung's plants in Poland / Hungary are targeting enough cells for c. 300k x 200...

    VW will trample tesla

@Peteski My experience of dealing with Tesla UK, particularly on the service side, was they were hugely disorganised. Didn't seem to even have a proper job booking system, random (long) waits for service visits, massively overstretched technicians, no spare parts inventory, etc. etc. I admit...

I'd love to hear how this wrap job works out, it sounds like a neat idea.

Why do people really want Tesla to fail?

Nope sedan sales, for what they were worth, being a tiny fraction of the big sellers in Europe. These continue tanking. Look at ANY EU country's top selling car over the last decade... ALWAYS hatchbacks. Today, inspired by this very discussion I took it upon myself to count the cars that went...

Why do people really want Tesla to fail?

They are. Hence the shift to CUV's. Putting it into perspective 29% of sales in BMW are now X variants, and the X2 is likely to continue that trend. This is on top of the Touring (wagon) and GT (fastback) versions. It's got to the point BMW are outsourcing 5 series to Magna. Merc are doing...

Why do people really want Tesla to fail?

@Coolbreezesd I think Europe will be next after China, and the incumbent manufacturers can see this. Yes car companies are investing in a lot of new models, but there has been a shift. If you told me 5 years ago things like the I-Pace, Kona or VW I.D. would be launched in Europe before the US...

Why do people really want Tesla to fail?

Erm... because I owned a Model S for nearly 4 years, was a one of the first UK owners, and I did like the car! (Though not so keen on some of the quality issues and disorganised service centre staff). Come replacement time the car hadn't moved on enough on the interior, and the nearest...

Why do people really want Tesla to fail?

I haven't seen SpaceX's numbers ;) I admire what they are doing, but Tesla != SpaceX (yet ?)

Why do people really want Tesla to fail?

Agree, and we all have to be smarter. For me, buying the Tesla was a gateway to thinking about this stuff, and I am grateful. Now taking a step back, calculating my actual usage, I see I'm better served with a PHEV, for my use case. I just get frustrated by the BEV purists who don't take the...

Why do people really want Tesla to fail?

Compared to what? Genuinely I'm creating less CO2 in my current car than my previous Tesla. I've gone from 350Wh/mi lifetime average in my Model S to 275Wh/mi by driving a lighter PHEV that I never* run on gas. Using a grid feed that is partially fossil powered, I'm saving CO2. (This is...

Why do people really want Tesla to fail?

Maybe some of us are just frustrated by boneheaded moves by Tesla? I WISH for them to succeed, but unfortunately think unless they mature, and Tesla get a Tim Cook to Elon's Jobs they are staring down the barrel of failure. The Falcon Wing Doors and over automated production line may seal...

    Spontaneous Crack in Glass Roof

Lots of PHEVs have remote heating, so I'm not convinced it's an EV problem. More likely a supplier issue.

    Jaguar I-Pace

I hope the analogy is closer to some of the single make "cup" series. I.e. road car's stripped but with cage and FIA safety stuff added. One thing I did note on the Geneva eTrophy car was the grille was completely blocked off and the top of the hood covered in a black flush cover to look like...
  22. S

    Jaguar I-Pace

It never truly launched. It is still a proposed series, and has been bubbling round for a couple of years. Originally they intended to use RWD cars, then it was AWD's then... While I admire the work the guys behind it put in trying to get it off the ground it really needs Tesla factory...

    Jaguar I-Pace

It looks even better in the flesh :) (They had one on display at Geneva.) Interestingly some of the items looked too production ready for a mock-up. For example it was using the same carbon fibre rotors and big calipers found on the F-Type SVR. I asked directly when the SVR edition would be...

Tesla Rip Off- Full Self Driving

As an example. If you ordered a new car on lease (any car this is not Tesla specific), it arrives and one of the optional extras that you had specified was missing due to an error. This extra couldn't be retrofitted, but after discussions you decided to take the car anyway. The lease company...
  26. S

Tesla Rip Off- Full Self Driving

The easy one would be for any lease cars ordered over the AP1 to AP2 transition. (and I know this is stepping outside the FSD region into AP/EAP not FSD), fundamentally for the period between AP2 reaching AP1 parity then really the lease company have not delivered for a pro-rata'd amount of the...

Tesla Rip Off- Full Self Driving

Then Tesla should just refund it to anyone that wants their money back. ;) However, and going back to my original point on lease vehicles. All lease vehicles are owned by the finance company. The lessee agreed to fair enjoyment of a product with a specified feature set for a set term at a...
  28. S

Tesla Rip Off- Full Self Driving

Which is exactly why consumer finance agreement regulations could kick in. You have borrowed money to speculate on a future outcome. It's more like taking something on margin than a traditional finance contract, and none of the usual disclaimers for this sort of borrowing will be present in...
  29. S

Tesla Rip Off- Full Self Driving

I too think there will be a big number of lease cars going back with FSD paid for but not delivered within the lease window. Not sure how it would work in the US, but talking to the lease company would probably be another avenue to explore. I would reach out to them and ask for a reduction in...

    Strange paint defect

@hallvardr Unfortunately it's a common problem with Lotus :( It's caused by the panels absorbing water. My old Elise suffered a similar problem. Respray will fix it, but you do risk the problem reoccurring :( Best bet is to take it to a shop that has good experience in painting the...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

My view is more cynical. I think it was as much down to timing given the Moody's downgrade. Bad news was piling up for the stock that week and they went into damage limitation mode for the sake of the share price. (I await the flood of disagrees ;) )
  32. S

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Which truly would be the "nuclear option". If a subpoena was filed it would be matter of public record, and there is no way Tesla could spin it as for public safety. (They have made some boneheaded decisions in the past, but that would be monumentally bad news). What is possibly more...
  33. S

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

@Tam Here is the letter from NTSB to Tesla. As far as I can see there are strict rules once the NTSB get involved under which participants cede rights to public release of information during the investigation. Tesla breached those rules, and no amount of tweeting by Elon decrying those rules...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Yep it's taught as part of the IAM driving course. (Advanced driving and riding courses | IAM RoadSmart). It is not mandatory for the pass, but doing so is strongly encouraged. Here it is being demonstrated in regular day to day driving: Statistically speaking drivers who take advanced...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Firstly I will preface this by saying I have been involved in some accidents, and yes they were my fault. But hey I was young (<20) and foolish, and learnt my lesson :) Subsequently to that I have, through choice, been on some advanced driver courses run by police instructors. There are...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

My bet is the majority of cars currently within a 3 year lease go back without the FSD having been delivered.
  38. S

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

@Economite Or you go as far as it has gone here in the UK, where motorways are being converted into what are in effect 100% radar speed limited. In part the new "smart motorways" we have here are a backdoor to automated average speed camera checks (which are already prevalent in things like...
  39. S

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

True, but it would minimize incidents in single occupancy vehicles, and be a very clear messaging from Tesla that using your phone while on AP is not OK.
  40. S

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

@mongo How about this for lateral thinking. 6. Enable AP only if it senses your phone is on charge, or somehow use the app to determine the phone isn't being actively used. To be honest Apple / Android could both implement something like this for their devices such that when paired to a car...
  41. S

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

For level 3 it needs to shift responsibility from driver to car whilst operating within certain constraints. This is a subtle point, but if we take the Audi A8's advertised specs, they are indeed allowing you to read texts / watch movies etc (maybe eating your breakfast is too far, as suggested...
  42. S

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

The Audi A8 does. https://spectrum.ieee.org/cars-that-think/transportation/self-driving/the-audi-a8-the-worlds-first-production-car-to-achieve-level-3-autonomy Now it will only operate up to a fairly slow 37 mph and on divided highways. This is it's defined ODD (Operational Design Domain)...

Anyone tested S/X CHAdeMO Adapter on Model 3

It seems Renault are limping on with AC only for a while longer with the Zoe. For the sort of use a Zoe is likely to see, this isn't entirely crazy. If I was to put money on it though I personally think they will add 2 extra pins when the Zoe gets replaced (and probably with a shared...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

^ This. Currently the guidance ( https://www.hsdl.org/?view&did=795644 ) states the following: With two high profile fatal accidents featuring autonomous vehicles in such a short period, I think there will be a lot of pressure to move from a voluntary basis to something more formal. My...

Anyone tested S/X CHAdeMO Adapter on Model 3

I think if you asked UK BEV drivers they'd wish the Outlander didn't come with it. It has caused a lot of frustration for BEV owners given the popularity of the Outlander and owners perceived to be needlessly blocking rapids :(
  46. S

Anyone tested S/X CHAdeMO Adapter on Model 3

@wws I'm 99% sure Kia will go for CCS following this: South Korea to standardize on CCS fast-charging standard used by US, German makers Really this just leaves the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance offering any future model year with a CHAdeMO socket. (Renault have also joined CHARin, and...
  47. S

Anyone tested S/X CHAdeMO Adapter on Model 3

Above 50kW yes, at least in Europe. (IMHO) I think we'll see death rattles with multi-headed units going in, but apart from DBT I don't know of anyone offering more than 50kW CHAdeMO on these even if the CCS side does 150kW+.

    VW will trample tesla

Definitely a dealership model here in the UK. Maybe(?) slightly different as many have been aggregated over the years into large (listed) multi-franchise businesses. These firms operate Mercedes + Audi + Jaguar + .Ford + VW across the country, but don't brand share at any one location. HTH.
