Recommendations, please: kayaks, trailers, hitches, advice for Model 3

I also haul 2 kayaks on the roof of my Model 3 with J-bars on the cross bars. Everything fits just fine. Any J-bar should work. I use the JayLow (JayLow).

Just got 2020.40.8, no range increase for M3P

My M3P just downloaded 2020.40.8. Sadly, release notes do not say anything about range increase. Guess it was just for the MY. Oh well, can't complain too much, I have gotten at least a few performance upgrades for free since purchasing in May, 2019.

    Plaid a total game changer?

Just sharing some musings about the potential for the Plaid. A prototype Lucid Air was clocked doing a 9.2 second 1/4 mile with a trap speed of 157 MPH. Elon has promised the Plaid will do a sub 9 second1/4 which means trap speed could approach 160 MPH. For reference, the fastest production...

    Things I will miss

There are 2 USB slots. You can have a music drive separate from the TeslaCam drive. If you need more USB slots, get one of the many available USB hubs. Note however, that Tesla does not play well with proprietary music formats, so no ALAC.

20" OEM Sport Wheels vs. Zero-G Wheels

From what I have read, the Zero-G wheels are not truly forged and weigh about the same as the stock 20" wheel. A true forged wheel will be both lighter and stronger than the "flow forged" or other "semi-forged" wheels. While quite expensive, the T-Sportline 20" forged wheel is less than 20 lbs...

Model 3 Super Sport (a proposal)

If you are talking about the new Tesla sports car, then hardly an apples to apples thing. None of the ICE sport sedans break $100K let alone $200K. That is Porsche Turbo S and maybe even low end Ferrari money. The new Tesla sports car may well embarrass them, but that is not the pool in which I...

Question for former MS owners who own model 3 now.

Haven't owned an S but did drive one as a loaner for several hours while my M3P was in for service. I have not looked up the actual dimensions of either car, but just in terms of feel, the S feels substantially wider and longer. Thus, in my limited experience, I felt the S would be harder to...

Model 3 Super Sport (a proposal)

I will start off by saying that I definitely enjoy my M3P and have no regrets about purchasing it. However, after a year and a few months of driving it, I have had some thoughts that I would like to share. As background, I have previously owned an AMG C63 with the 6.2l engine, an AMG C63s with...

Cost to own Model 3 AWD vs Subaru Outback

Even if you can only get a 120 volt plug at work you will still be able to add about 3 miles of driving range for each hour of charge. Not much, every bit will help.

Cost to own Model 3 AWD vs Subaru Outback

With respect to range in winter, it will depend on ambient temperature, how much you run the heat, the snow tires you use and the road conditions. I was alarmed when I took a winter drive of less than 200 miles and came close to running out of charge, but that was under some fairly bad...

Cost to own Model 3 AWD vs Subaru Outback

You might want to check with your car insurance agent on the cost for the M3. Some people have gotten unpleasant surprises with the unexpected high cost of insurance, but it seems to vary widely by company. Before the M3, my wife had an Audi RS3 and the M3 is actually a bit less expensive to...

Another alternative is to get an anchor that goes in the frunk with a thin strap that comes out of the frunk and provides a loop through which you can secure a hold down strap. Here is a link to an example to help with my poor description - Hood Anchor. There are multiple brands available and...

Nairb, Excellent suggestion. At the risk of too much information, I will now present a short-ish review of the Oru Bay ST kayak as there are definitely pluses and minuses. My wife and I started out each with our own Oru Bay ST kayak last summer and this was our first real experience with...

Recommendations, please: kayaks, trailers, hitches, advice for Model 3

Kayaks come in a variety of sizes, lengths, and weights. While pricey, you can get very nice 13' to 15' kayaks that weigh between 35 and 45 pounds. These are good for everything from quiet lakes and rivers all the way to bays and ocean coastlines. But be prepared to spend $2k to $4k each for...

Model 3 owners getting screwed over?

Also, to be fair, the Model 3 Performance has received some really great upgrades for free, including, 2 power increases that have taken it from 12.0 seconds in the 1/4 mile to 11.5 and 2 track mode upgrades that allow for significantly higher road course performance. That is certainly better...

Lightweight wheel owners - your feedback on unsprung reduction vs stock

Just as a reminder, T-Sportline sells their M3115 fully forged 20" wheel that is fully hub centric (no hub rings). The 8.5" wheel is listed as 19.75 pounds. For me, this is a great option as it allows use of the stock tires with a wheel that is almost 10 pounds lighter than stock. The only...

    Funniest Tesla Question Thread

More cute than dumb, years ago my 9 year-old son heard me say that using the brakes in our hybrid recharged the battery. He asked why I didn't drive with the brakes on all the time to keep the battery fully charged. I considered explaining about entropy, the second law of thermodynamics...

Lightweight wheel owners - your feedback on unsprung reduction vs stock

Don't forget that the P3D- comes with lower performance tires that likely have substantially lower rolling resistance than the sticky Michelin PS4S on the heavy and less aero 20" Performance wheels. Let's face it, every aspect of the P3D+ rolling stock presents less rolling efficiency than the...

Buying new car outside California/ Tax questions

Less attention to the constitution than you might think. Prior to about 2001, CA charged a $300 "fee" to register a car purchased outside the state if it was a "49 state" car, because "the California version of the car was more expensive because of CA emissions standards." This was the case...

Buying new car outside California/ Tax questions

It depends on how the customer takes delivery of the car. If the car is delivered in some states and gets a temporary tag in the state of delivery, then the state will demand sales tax. This tax may or may not be credited against the tax due in the state of actual registration. That also depends...

What gain in Range will I get by shaving 6-7 pounds off the 20'' OEM

I would agree that there will be a very small increase in range, probably not sufficient to measure compared to temperature effects. The main improvement would be in the areas of braking, transient cornering (i.e., quick direction changes), and acceleration. I have swapped heavy wheels for...

V10 and front park distance sensor

My garage is very short, so I have to pull up very close to the stairs that lead up from the garage to the house in order for the back end of the car to clear the garage door. From the time I got the car in May until this week, the front parking distance sensor has been very accurate in...

    Model S on Nurburgring

This is by far the most entertaining and exciting soap opera I have seen in years ;-) Here is hoping that Elon can pull out another one just like he did when he challenged the BMW M3 and tuned up the Model 3 Performance to back up his claims.

    Taycan Takedown

Never did I suggest it would be a Tesla killer. That is what "chalk and cheese" means, i.e., that the two items are neither comparable nor is one a substitute for the other. I'm disappointed that Elon has not yet followed through on his tweet about running an S on the 'ring. Perhaps he...

    Taycan Takedown

Really? Here is what I said. Comparing chalk and cheese. Top of the line Taycan is not intended to compete with any version of the M3. It will be priced above the MSP and will outperform it, including having a much nicer interior, maintaining full or near full performance for extended track...

    Where to store summer tires?

Also, either cover the tires or ensure that no sunlight hits them when stored. Also, covering them is a good way to minimize ozone exposure (in case there is any in your garage). Ozone and sunlight are the two things that kill tires most quickly.

    Taycan Takedown

The most disappointing thing for me with this time is that it pales in comparison to the AMG GT 63 S. Yes, that car is a dino drinking dinosaur, but a 7:25 ring time is amazing for 4 passenger a car that weighs 4,500+ lbs. For those who think rear wheel steering does not help, this should put...

    Apple CarPlay & Android Auto

Porsche has been supporting CarPlay for several years, but has never embraced AndroidAuto. It forced me to get an iPhone ;-). CarPlay works very well in the Porsche, so I am disappointed that it is not supported by Tesla.

    Taycan Takedown

Not so hard to believe. The Model S Raven goes 10.5 @ 127, so it traps well above 124 and may be able to hit 124 in 10 or less. Porsche keeps saying the Taycan is optimized for higher speeds for the autobahn.

    Need 20" wheel advice

Here is my situation. I have a Model 3 Performance with the 20" wheels and Michelin PS4S tires. I have done this with several previous cars and my floor jack and torque wrench are ready...

    Raven de-tune mode?

Funny you should mention it as I was thinking of trading my 911 for the Model S Performance. However, after the low-ball trade-in offer from Tesla, I will be keeping the 911.

    Taycan Takedown

Cayman GT4 does not smoke a 911 S, at least according to fastestlaps.com. For example, Laguna Seca 1:37.43 vs. 1:36.44; Hockenheim Short 1:10.1 vs. 1:09.6; Nurburgring 7:42 vs. 7:34. I'm not sure a P3D could even get around the Nurburgring without some performance degradation. Meanwhile, I...

    Taycan Takedown

I'm sure the new roadster will be amazing, but as many Tesla fans have already mentioned in this thread, price is a consideration. At $250K to $300K, the Tesla Roadster is another chalk and cheese comparison when discussing either the P3D or the Taycan. At that point it will be time to check in...

    Taycan Takedown

Sorry, but where is the data to support the claim that P3D beats most non - GT 911s? Last I checked, 911 S does 1/4 faster than a P3D and at a much higher trap speed, corners almost a full 0.1 g faster and brakes considerably shorter (not surprising being 600-700 pounds lighter). The P3D is a...

    Taycan Takedown

There were follow up articles in the 3 big car mags describing the tests in more detail. From what I read, the Taycan was not charged between these runs (though it was fully charged to start) and the total variation in performance from best to worst of the 30+ runs was 0.8 seconds. Can the M3P...

    Raven de-tune mode?

I'm considering a new MS Performance. My wife has a M3 Performance that I have driven fairly aggressively at times and it has never gone into limp or de-tune mode. Based on reports from owners and magazines taking the M3 to the track, it stands up to at least 3 or 4 hard laps before limiting...

    Apple CarPlay

Perhaps I could suggest some anger management for you. I am still amazed that strangers want to tell me how I should be using my car. If you don't want CarPlay, don't use it. Don't tell me in some condescending manner how I should not want it. And just to be clear, listening to and responding...

    Apple CarPlay

The hostility some have expressed toward AA and CarPlay is bewildering. Many of us Tesla owners would like CarPlay and/or AA. If it does not appeal to an owner, he/she would not have to use it. Some of the arguments advanced are also either just wrong or hard to understand. For example, "Tesla...

    Misc. Model 3 questions

I can answer a few of the above questions, but other than a brief loaner of an old and tired Model S, I have no Model S experience. In the US, there is no "range mode" on the Model 3, there is a "Chill" mode. I have never used it, so no comment on effect on range. Tint on the glass roof is...

Annoying braking on TACC - is this normal?

This same problem got worse for me on 2019.4.2. It happened far less often on the previous version. It is annoying and I hope it will improve in the next release.

Final Decision, 14-50 or Wall Connector?

The Gen 2 UMC is $275. The Gen 1 is $520. The Gen 1 will charge at 40A while the Gen 2 is limited to 32A. I initially went with the 14-50. After a few weeks, I decided I wanted faster charging, so I purchased an OpenEVSE 40A charger as a kit. It was on sale for $400 at the time. Overall, this...
