What a poorly written article. Says Tesla doesn't work on battery tech then later in same article says are are working on it. Tesla needs cheap batteries first then more range. The article talks about batteries overhearing something that 'Tesla and others have been struggling with' I believe the article said.
Biggest problem with solid state is low power density, higher operating temperatures (requires warm-up). Also $/kWh will be a big concern going ahead.Every article on those financial sites is complete garbage... and that fuels are stock market. :-/
Regardless, theoretically solid state lithium ion batteries would have the highest possible energy density you can get from lithium ion, so it is kind of a threat to Tesla. Timeline TBD.
Completely different both physically and in general characteristics. Capacitors are high power density and low energy density, while solid state batteries are the exact opposite. What is the difference between a solid state battery and a capacitor? Can they be considered the same, or if something is called a capacitor, is it expected to discharge all its stored energy at once?
That's what everyone wants to achieve, but fundamentally a capacitor and battery will still be different. Batteries store energy using chemical reactions, while capacitors store it in an electric field.Mmmmh...so what if an item combines high power density and high energy density? What would you then call it (aside from the Holy Grail)?
@stopcrazypp, have you heard about "Flash Batteries" from StorDot Ltd? Look them up. They are in Israel, and the batteries they make are based on a Nano-dot matrix that is based on proprietary organic materials. For example, their phone battery charges to full capacity in 30 seconds! The battery they have developed for EV's is able to charge to a 300 mile range in 5 minutes!!! Go to their site and give me your reaction. Is it real? If it is real, then say good bye to the ICE (smoke pump) cars!! The time to charge is no longer than what it takes to fill a tank with gas. If it is real, Musk ought to be there making a deal, and transferring the technology to the gigafactory. The flash batteries charge like a capacitor, but have the energy density of a battery, and according to the site, the life time of full charges is well in excess of what lithium ion batteries currently have. The first EV company to have this battery will own the market!!
