Changing headliner

I have an S85 and want to change my headliner from the standard tan to black alcantara. Al and Eds in L.A. will do this, but they dye all the plastic pieces. I'm concerned the dye will peel or chip. Has anyone else done an aftermarket headliner change?

Your fears are correct. I had my lexus headliner done black, they painted the plastic parts and they chip and scratch then look like hell, i would not do it again.

If done correctly, I don't think you would have much to fear. I have done the plastic pieces on other cars (not a Tesla) with excellent and long lasting results.

I seem to recall someone has this done by the SvC and it was around $5K--I believe it included the trim for the A and B pillars too. Try searching for the tread or just call your SvC.

The proper way to change the color of plastic is to dye it, not paint it.

OP said dye, not paint, assuming that's what the shop said, and not his own words, then there's no risk of chipping.

Because many people don't like feeling claustrophobic while driving? Very few vehicles have a dark headliner, there's a really good reason for that. Manufacturers want their car to feel open and airy, nothing defeats that quicker than a black headliner.
