According to BMW spokesman Tom Salkowsky, the ActiveE lease program is expected to begin in mid-2011. Mini E drivers will have the option to extend their leases until the ActiveE is ready, at which point they will offered a chance to migrate to the new cars.
The Active-E is a converted 1-series, yet weighs nearly 4000 pounds and as a result, acceleration and handling are probably nothing to write home about. Still, I’m sure it’d be a nice car to get around in, although you’ll be paying through the nose: $850/month, plus a grueling application process.
o word on when BMW will start taking applications from those looking to lease the cars. If you’re interested, be warned: The process for the Mini-E was pretty arduous. That won’t keep us from putting our name on the list, just as soon as we figure out how to hide the monthly lease in our expense reports.
BMW's first all-electric concept vehicle is coming: Introducing the Concept ActiveE.
The Concept ActiveE achieves entirely CO2-free mobility. But this achievement does not hinder incredible performance. The ActiveE will go up to 100 miles on one charge, depending on conditions and can accelerate from 0-60 in under 9 seconds.
The style of the all-new vehicle is similar to that of the 1 Series, offering sporty design and incredible agility. Further performance enhancements include both an overall weight-reduced construction and the optimal placement of the electric motor in the rear axle. The low center of gravity and axle load distribution create the exhilarating, power-driven handling enjoyed in all BMW vehicles.
I'm not sure why it would be DOA though, it could be a good small family second car depending on price and how they market it.
