Took my 2021 SR+ on a 3000 mile road trip from LA to Denver and back!

Took two weeks at the end of April/beginning of May to drive from LA to Denver and back. Lots of sightseeing stops along the way, overall the SR+ performed flawlessly!

A few thoughts from the trip:

  • Supercharger spacing and availability is decent on the interstates, but did prevent day trips to places like Bryce Canyon NP and Capitol Reef NP. Hope Tesla and other companies will continue to add more chargers at interesting destinations, a lot of places could be reached from SCs, but then you'd be left with not much energy left and will have to use L2 charging, which made them impractical to visit unless you want to stay overnight
  • Only once in the 3000 miles did I have range anxiety, westbound I70 from Green River UT to Richfield UT had huge headwinds, and the Tesla trip planner still doesn't take wind and weather into account, plus adding intermediate stops is bugged and will add way too much unfounded optimism to the overall energy estimations. ABRP is much more accurate.
  • The car's so much fun to drive, plenty of power, comfortable, autopilot (with radar) for the most part is excellent. Camped in the back of the car with mattress a few times and it's great.
  • EVs are great for higher elevations, no loss of power, in fact, it's probably even faster in the thinner air!
  • Total SC cost was $175, charged for free overnight at various hotels/public L2 chargers, so much cheaper than driving a gas car!

I would love to know how your "clamping" with a mattress went? Was it an air mattress (would make sense)? Do you have a pic of that? You present SOOOOOO many possibilities. Thank you.
It's a fold up foam mattress twin sized kind of like this one. I modified it a bit by cutting bits of foam that sits near the edge at the seat pass through area, because that area isn't completely flat and will cause the mattress to bulge up a bit on both sides. After cutting some foam out, the mattress is completely flush and flat and is a bit more comfortable.

I used soft luggage bags and simply folded up the mattress in the morning and shoved it back into the trunk and put the seats up again. Also used tescamp privacy shades to block all the windows, but to be honest it was a bit of a faff to setup and I wish I got a set of perfectly form fitting window shades to black out the car instead.
