Should I order the chargers separate from the car?

So I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the 2024 M3. But I heard that when you order and get the chargers in the same order, then they will come with your car. But I'd really like to get the charger installed ahead of time. So should I make two orders - one for the car and one for the charger - and then I can get the charger earlier on? Or is that not going to work out that way.

Order it separately and get it installed before taking delivery. Same price.

Only reason to order it with the car would be if you wanted it rolled into the loan.

I ordered mine ahead of time and got it installed. If I understand the warranty correctly a separately purchased wall connector has a 4 year warranty. If purchased with the car it falls under the 4 yr/50k mile warranty…. In my case I would run the mileage out long before 4 years is reached.

A couple of points:

  • They are not called Chargers, they are Connectors
  • You did not indicate if you are talking about the Mobile Connector or the Wall connector

In the case of the wall connector you will want to get it before the car so it can be installed and ready to use when the car shows up. In the case of the mobile connector, whether you get it early or with the car is immaterial, but of course you will need to have the outlet installed and ready to go.

In the vast majority of cases, for home charging, the wall connector is the way to go. When you consider the cost of a mobile connector, plus a GFCI breaker, high quality continuous load outlet, and some sort of cable management system the total cost is about the same as the wall connector with a standard breaker. The wall connector can be used on 240v circuits from 15a to 60a, and on a 60a circuit will charge your car at 48a while the mobile connector tops out at 32a. The wall connector is also WiFi enabled so you get Firmware updates and can add it to your Tesla app.

Enjoy your new car!

Check your utility company about rebates and such. Many will give you a break on the wall (installed) connector if purchased separately.

I got the mobile connector free with my first car and kept it when I traded.

I also have the wall connector. I bought it when I found out that our utility company reimburses for it up to $500. So I'll install my free wall charger someday, but with 32 amps from the mobile one I'm doing OK without.
