More than 415 of about 780 firms surveyed for their friendliness toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workers now cover related procedures, including hormone therapy and sex-reassignment surgeries, according to the Human Rights Campaign. That’s more than double the number in 2012, and up from just 49 in 2009.

Netflix Inc., Facebook Inc. and Tesla Motors Inc. are among 82 companies added to the Washington-based HRC’s list this year. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. may consider adding benefits in the future; Goldman Sachs Group Inc. has offered them since 2008, the companies said.

LGBTTQQIAAP2S

This came up in conversation on the way to a birthday party a few weekends ago. The young lady coming of age had chosen to develop a website for teenage bullying awareness (funded by the Trevor Project) for her Bat Mitzvah project. We started looking at the website as we left the Shul - the banquet hall seemed to be a continent away, though really it was just the breadth of Brooklyn - and came across that acronym. Turns out LGBT is now referred to as LGBT +, and if you're wondering what is covered by PLUS, well, it's that TQQIAAP2S part. We spent a good portion of the half hour ride trying to identify all 13 letters of the acronym.

OK, go!

A lot of companies are doing this now to try to look good. Guess what, though, a proposed rule is being pushed through and is open to comment till November that will require nondiscrimination in health insurance. This includes gender equality, so women can't have higher premiums anymore, as well as gender identity. This means they can no longer deny coverage for any transgender care. The rule is pretty much known that it's going to go through, so all of these places are trying to make it look like they're some amazing place that supports LGBT and such, when in fact they waited till it was imminent that they were going to be forced to do it.
