NIO, a Chinese electric car manufacture backed by tech heavyweights, has unveiled a 7-seater, all-electric SUV as its first “serial production” car.

Called the ES8, the the vehicle will initially be aimed at the Chinese market.

According to a press release: The NIO ES8 is a full size 7-seater electric SUV with a 2-3-2 seating arrangement. The length of the vehicle is over 196 inches long and the wheelbase is over 118 inches long. The ES8 has an all-aluminum body and chassis, front and rear motors with electric all-wheel drive, and active air suspension. The ES8 features the “design identity” of every NIO vehicle: the X-bar and signature “Spark Beat” tail lights. The vehicle’s swappable battery will provide a charging experience that surpasses refuelling at gas stations.

Additionally, the company said it is now taking reservations for a second batch of its $1.48 million NIO EP9. The supercar debuted in November has a range of 265 miles and a top speed of 194 mph.

NIO, is backed by Chinese technology giants Tencent Holdings and Baidu Inc., as well as U.S.-based venture capital firms.

NIO goes after Tesla Model X with new all-electric SUV, battery swap and renting structure

"... The company first unveiled the vehicle in April, but yesterday they launched it at a massive event in Beijing where they flew thousands of reservation holders to see the vehicle in person..."

I see - now - where NIO used its R&D funds.

Competition is good. The interior is interesting. Like the way the front seats work. Want to see some good reviews.

Hope they bring them to the US. Also hope they get the same tariffs that China puts on Tesla vehicles.

3 minute battery swap is an interesting idea.
