Update - I have since personally confirmed that the Y handles offer about a 1/16th of an inch of "give" in the area pointed to in the arrow when pressed. Should be enough to crack the ice if needed. My M3 offers no similar give, but I suspect putting a softer (foam instead of hard rubber)...
