Primer Coat Color - Based Upon Chosen Color - Variances?

The Pearl and Base White have a white primer, all other colors are a medium/dark gray prime. Signature Red used to have a red prime on the Model S, but no longer.
  2. D

    Hi - I'm new. Am I nut for considering a Model S??

Rethink. Sorry, just wanted to be contrarian

    Tesla's Paint Shop Upgrade

The colors for X will be exactly the same as S.
  4. D

    Tesla can't deliver 50-55k cars 2015?

The demand for S is diminished. They can't build the X bc the new paint shop is not ready. Even if it was, the new body shop is not ready either. Tesla will build 45K this year, X production next year.
  5. D

New Model S paint color choices (as of 10 Apr 2015)

Correct, they are still using the original paint shop.

    Tesla's new Lathrop, CA facility

Krug beat me to it and is exactly right. They are casting parts there, not dies.
  7. D

Design Studio Revisions 4-10-15 (Yes, again)

Midnight Silver is what they have renamed the "new Gray" that replaced the "old Tiburon/Dolphin Gray". It's not a new color, just a new name.

2015 Q1 Discussion thread for Delivery numbers, Earnings Report and Conference Call

Maybe up front, but all of the people that actually make the car were in there working, be it body, paint, assembly, etc. They were building cars on Saturdays last year, especially in the last month of each quarter. Please don't take that away from the people in there working their butts off...

2015 Q1 Discussion thread for Delivery numbers, Earnings Report and Conference Call

Not sure if it means anything or not, but they don't have the whole factory working Saturdays this quarter up to the end as they have previously.

    Lighter Shade of Blue?

Not sure why they need the new paint shop to run new colors - they have run 10 colors in the past and are currently only at 7 in production now, so they should have 3 open systems for new colors. Fits nicely with the three new colors that seem to be floating around.
  11. D

    Lighter Shade of Blue?

Or within a couple weeks
  12. D

    Tesla's Paint Shop Upgrade

Maybe the upgrade is why they increased the price of Silver, Gray and Blue from $750 to $1000 a couple weeks ago, gotta pay for the new paint shop
  13. D

    Lighter Shade of Blue?

very true - I should have clarified I was referring to the color options in the 1000's range
  14. D

    Lighter Shade of Blue?

usually the common theme for range of color selection depends on hand built/painted vs going through an automated line using high-volume paint circulation systems

New color rumors (of facts) anyone?

We will see, but I stick by my statement that new colors will be offered before the new paint shop/Model X is up and running, and that the green and brown were eliminated to be replaced by new colors (will not be brought back). I also bet that there will still only be ~10 colors offered, and...

New color rumors (of facts) anyone?

The green and brown were eliminated to make room for new colors. I would expect new ones in the next month or so. Probably 2 or 3 to replace those no longer in the palette (Sig Red, Green, Brown,).
  17. D

    Model X Colors?

Yes, because they are painted by hand. I bet Model X will have exactly the same color palette as Model S. I doubt Green and Brown come back, but I would expect them to be replaced by new colors this quarter. Minus Sig Red and the previous two, Tesla is down to 7 colors (Black, Silver, Gray...

No Model X at the NAIAS

The facility is no longer "mostly unused". Pretty much all buildings are filled, other than the old north paint shop which is where the new one is being built. They really don't have the space for a secret indoor test track.
  19. D

    I was frustrated... But now...

Sorry, all complaints in block form are invalid.

Selling P+, ordering P85D -- try new color?

It has nothing to do with the paint shop, only what Franz and the design team decide.

2015 Outlook Tesla Motors factory in Fremont, California.

It's the only way they can make the production numbers as they continue to rise. If it was the batteries, you would think Tesla would wait for them to stock up and run normal production, not add shifts and days.
  22. D

Huge quarter end spike in deliveries

It's the former. Wouldn't be working today just for a massive beat. Production is behind from the shutdown/startup of the new line.
  23. D

Is the Factory Producing on Weekends?

Factory is working full Saturdays and "volunteer" Sundays. Expect this through the end of the year.
  24. D

Weekly capacity at Fremont will be at least 2,500 after upgrade of Body Line in 2015.

I think Q3 will be hurt more by the slower than expected ramp of the new assembly line than new paint shop. Wouldn't expect major construction to start until Q4/Q1 2015, just some demo work in Q3.
  25. D

Who has gone into production since the line resumed?

So they are still working Saturdays?
  26. D

Will Model X styling be dated by the time it arrives?

We will all find out in October when the pics of the first one get leaked.
  27. D

Toured the Factory Today - Model X is Coming

The old assembly area is no more. Some of the equipment was moved to the new assembly area, the rest was rendered obsolete by the upgrades made and removed. There is only one assembly line operational, it will be used for both S/X. So they are not making Model S (or anything) in the old area.
  28. D

Weekly capacity at Fremont will be at least 2,500 after upgrade of Body Line in 2015.

This is all pretty far off from the actual capacity of the new line.

Go to Home Depot and get some MEK (Methyl-Ethyl Ketone)
  30. D

    New Grey for Model S

If it's the color you want, I would insist on getting it. Tesla knew they were getting rid of the Tiburon Gray and switching to Steel Gray - they should have pulled it off the website much earlier and not allowed it to be an option to pick when ordering. You are the customer, don't compromise...

    2014 Q2 Prediction Thread

Maybe they are not at a consistent 800 rate currently for a 5-day work week.
  32. D

Tesla idles Fremont production line for Model X upgrade

It depends on the obsessive tendencies of the owner. Opti coat and paint armor were in business long before Tesla came around, and I doubt the 50K Model S's on the road are what's keeping them around.
  33. D

Will Tesla add a third production line in 2016 to meet growing demand for S/X in 2017

Tesla is running 2 shifts, but don't assume they are only 8 hours. They are more like 10 hours with the possibility to run 11 or 12 (depending on the area). Also they worked every Saturday in June, so at some point the OT and extra days burn people out. With the increase in production numbers...

    New Grey for Model S

It is definitely a new color, and it is darker than the original. I agree that people should judge it in person, there is a little more metallic in it from what I hear.
  35. D

    New Grey for Model S

Just wait until a metallic version of the Black comes around

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2014

100% positive factory is not planning to shut down for a month. Factory tour being postponed a month bc they do not want to bring people through right after they start back up. If factory was down a month, tours would be postponed longer than that.
  37. D

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2014

Your source loses credibility right there, since the plant will be down for only 2 weeks (beginning the end of next week). We have learned in the past that people at the stores and SC's may not be in the know, but for some reason try to pass along info as if they were.

    Teslas in Movies & TV

Tesla Mentioned on ESPN's Mike and Mike This Morning Not sure if anyone on here listens to their show, but it's a pretty long-running radio broadcast that is also shown on TV in the mornings. Hall of Fame Wide Receiver Cris Carter was subbing in for one of the hosts. They were comparing the...

    Pearl White vs. White

And when it boils down to it, the pearl is the standard white with a layer of pearl (mica) coat over the top. Elegantly simple.

    Journalists just don't care anymore...

"I am feeling really good about being able to produce a compelling mass-market car in about three years," I kid, I kid. I know that's not the actual error, but based on Tesla timeline history it will be 4, but that's almost 3

Delivery estimate date move up? (Anyone expecting in August - Sept?)

@ USCJon - what color did you order? Just curious.
  42. D

    Color and paint job?

Franz and his design team pick the colors, we will see what they ultimately decide for the new ones. I bet the new colors they come out with are dark gray and dark black, based on their history.
  43. D

    Paint Question

Check the date. That quote was published before the paint shop was ever built. No Model S was ever powder coated, the process described above was never put into place.
  44. D

    Paint Question

The car was never powder coated.
  45. D

use of CFRP in future BEVs?

Maybe that's part of delay on Model X, they are trying to incorporate some plastic/cfrp into the body.
  46. D

    Tesla's new Lathrop, CA facility

This. For already internally supplied parts though that are causing constraint, and would more so as production tries to ramp up.
  47. D

    Model S Order & Delivery Tracker - Q1 2014

Couldn't possibly be that they ran short on say, left pearl mirror casings, had to hold pearl cars until they were able to get the part, then immediately build all held cars as soon as the part was available b/c they had promised delivery? I guess that could be considered unintentional...

    Model S Order & Delivery Tracker - Q1 2014
