Excellent question, but I cannot answer that categorically...yet. My last runs were on a bumpy road with a passenger in the car, so it is possible that LP without any preheat is essentially as fast as original LP with preheat. I should be able to quantitatively answer this when I visit the...
You bet! My car goes in for a service on Monday and I've requested that they check out the issue with battery preheat. Will keep everyone posted on the conclusions.
New testing results are in, comparing Ludicrous Plus with and without Preheating as well Ludicrous (without launch mode). Spoiler Alert: Preheating the battery may not necessarily provide a performance advantage.
The first run is in Ludicrous Plus mode but without preheating the battery to the...
That makes sense. What I need to determine is how much of a difference there will be. If it is less than 1 mph in the 1/8th, I would trade that for more consistent runs and performance longevity through the course of the day. I have run my car through the half-mile with and without battery...
After more consideration, I've concluded that my car was affected by heat soak rather than a software-update related change to a specific parameter in the powertrain management software. I preheated my battery while I was charging the car at home, a practice I had never resorted to until this...
I've had my 2017 P100DL since December 2017 and had very consistent performance since day one, up until today. A good measure of the performance of these cars is the 1/8th mile trap speed which is relatively insensitive to traction conditions. These cars should break 100 mph with 80% SOC. My...
Chassis tuning, specifically suspension setup, plays a major role in handling and is one area that hasn't been discussed on the new Roadster, probably because there is little to no additional information. The air suspension on current Teslas is a good compromise between ride comfort and...
This is a very key question. For track junkies (yours truly, included) this is the main weakness of the current Model S platform. Unfortunately, there is limited real-time telemetry on these cars from the standpoint of motor temperature, battery temperature and impedance, to understand the...
I'm not aware of any manufacturers quoting wheel torque (or wheel HP, for that matter). By that token, the P100D powertrain already makes a combined output around 10,000 Nm! o_O
Let's clarify some metrics by making a quick benchmark using known stats from the Model S P100D. As can be seen from the table below, the combined torque output of the P100D is 791 lb-ft. This is the peak torque output of the two motors. Using the peak power output of each motor, one can then...
Based on the 0-60 claim of 1.9 seconds, the average acceleration of the Roadster within this time/speed window comes out to ~1.44g. The same first-order calculation on the Model S P100D generates ~1.09g. In reality, the acceleration is non-linear so one can expect peak acceleration within this...

As noted by Saghost, tires on the Roadster are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s, 265/35-20 in front, and 325/35-21 in the rear. However, these are different from the Pilot Super Sports that are optional on the Model S P100D; the MPSC2 is an...
One thing to keep in mind is the total torque output of the three motors. At a claimed 10,000 Nm (~7376 lb-ft). This is more than an order of magnitude higher than the torque output of a high performance ICE, and allows for a very aggressive reduction ratio on the gearset. I'll have to do...
The Model S that Tesla has generously loaned me is a keeper and is too complete of a car to be replaced by the roadster or anything else for that matter. The 2020 Roadster is definitely on my horizon after the reveal, and will be the logical progression from my GT-R.
Thanks for the explanation. I also believe the Plus mode will only make a slight difference in 0-60 , but should be more substantial on the upper end. Would love to see the same run in the Plus mode and under ideal conditions, when you get to it!
Ah, good point - didn't realize you were in the EU. In any event, it does make sense to have dedicated winter tires as long as you're going with two sets of wheels and tires.
That sounds like the best option. I'm guessing the tires that come with the 19" base wheel are all seasons; did you stick with those or choose winter tires?
Thanks for the cool video. Is this in Ludicrous Plus mode (max battery power engaged)? With empirical 0-60 test results in the 2.3-2.4 second range in this mode, I would've expected 0-62 mph in the 2.6-2.7 second range.
The base wheel is the 19" Slipstream wheel which is 19X8.0" and is fitted with 245/45-19 tires (no stagger). An optional 19" wheel is the Cyclone Wheel which is also 19X8.0" front and rear. The third option is the 21" Turbine wheels which come in 21X8.5" fitted with 245x35-21 up front, and...
