    Plaid Vibration around 38-42MPH....

The Plaid's gearing is higher than previous performance Model Ss, so even at 200 mph the motor rpm is a little less than the older cars at 165 mph. The strength of the carbon sleeve will be needed for the Roadster's 250+ mph. The other function of the carbon is to hold the outer parts of the...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

You have to keep in mind that the slopes of those curves at the beginning are the forces on the car in the constant torque region. The Plaid curve isn't quit as steep as the 2019 Raven so the force is less, but the Plaid also weighs less so requires less force to achieve the same acceleration.

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

P85D wheel spin on acceleration. Red curve is rear torque, green is front torque. Notice how it drops quickly and slowly climbs back to programmed torque. These curves should be flat in this region. In case you think this has changed, watch the video at the included link. These guys have...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

People complain all the time that they fail to hook on a prepped track, when it isn't fresh, and can feel the torque get cut way back. It may not be "sophisticated", but it's optimized to perform on unprepped roads. This approach means the wheels seldom spin, where as an active system is...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

You can see from the side-by-side draggy results that the Sapphire and Plaid have the same acceleration after about 1.7 seconds and 50 mph. The speed difference actually drops slightly after that from 8 mph to 7 mph. It's early on where the Sapphire is pulling 1.5 gs vs the Plaids 1.3 gs that...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

Under the programmed torque, due to varying road conditions, the tires do occasionally start to spin. When this happens, the torque isn't just decreased slightly. It is drastically reduced to allow the tires to regain grip. Then the torque is relatively slowly brought back up to the programmed...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

It's well known that Tesla has a pre-programmed torque curve under max acceleration that is optimized for the factory tires on asphalt. It is active in the sense that if the tires start to spin while using the preprogrammed curve, the torque is reduced from the pre-programmed value, rather...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

Brooks made a point that they were at a private rental of the track and that the track had extra prep on it. He showed how much his shoes stuck to the track. That doesn't really help the Plaid since its traction control is preprogrammed for factory tires on asphalt. Track prep helps to some...

Rattling noise on fast acceleration on Model S 2018 75D

Sounds like worn cv joints. Fairly common. You can try turning the steering wheel all the way to the right and driving around for a few full circles. Do the same to the left. This sometimes redistributes the grease in the cv joints.

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

Sapphire's top speed is 205 mph, similar to Plaid's track package. The Plaid has higher gearing than the previous performance Model Ss, so even at 200 mph the top motor rpm is about the same as before. The carbon fiber will be needed for the Roadster with its 250+ mph top speed. Although, the...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

The Plaid against the Sapphire was on 21s and posted a 9.288 at 150 even while not in full cheetah mode.

Strange outgassing odor? -23 MSLR- Please help identify the cause

Yes, each drive unit has its own oil pump. They can sample the DU fluid by the drain plug to check for coolant contamination.

Strange outgassing odor? -23 MSLR- Please help identify the cause

Maybe they can detect the load on the electric oil pump in the DU? If coolant entered the DU, it could change the viscosity of the oil. There is a vent at the top of the DU where hot coolant vapors could escape / condense.

    Plaid Vibration around 38-42MPH....

I still have the vibration. I would say it is less but still quite noticeable. Can definitely feel it through accelerator pedal.

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

Using the published horsepower vs speed plot and taking into account the rotational inertia, loss in the gear box, rolling resistance, tire slip, aerodynamic drag and the mass of the car plus driver, the 170 lbs of removed weight makes a 0.113 second difference in elapsed time in the quarter...

Plaid obliterates Sapphire in 3 back to back 1/4 mile runs

My point is the curve is not as flat as Tesla says. This car has 47 hp more at the peak but 86 hp less at 200 mph than the perfect horsepower plot. This car's hp decreases by 177 from 80 mph to 200 mph, whereas Teslas plot shows a loss of only 62 hp. Also, this could be a car that has more hp...

Plaid obliterates Sapphire in 3 back to back 1/4 mile runs

Absolutely, it's better than a P85D. That had induction motors that are subject to back emf and limited battery voltage. The Plaid has an excellent hp vs speed curve. I'm just saying it doesn't look like it's as good as Tesla says it is. Sort of like the hp they claimed for your P85D.

Plaid obliterates Sapphire in 3 back to back 1/4 mile runs

It's printed right on the bottom of this image. They don't mention multiple pulls. The image you posted is "real time" as they did the pull. Then they immediately fade into the uncorrected plots.

Plaid obliterates Sapphire in 3 back to back 1/4 mile runs

That's corrected data. It's being corrected for the local density altitude which doesn't affect electric motors. That's why they show the uncorrected data later in the video. I mean "already" because the hp curve isn't as flat as Tesla says it is. At 160 mph it should be 1004 hp, but on the...

Plaid obliterates Sapphire in 3 back to back 1/4 mile runs

Plaid has 1067 peak hp (uncorrected) at the hubs and is already down to 948 hp at 161 mph. So at 200 mph it looks like it would be down to 890 hp where Tesla's plot puts it at 976 hp. That's falling off a lot faster than the perfect horsepower plot that Tesla made available which may be why...

How to make plaid accelerate faster ?

On the P85 since there was no issue with traction, you can see that the beginning of the hp vs speed is dead straight, implying constant torque. The P100D's torque increases from its initial value. You can see this because the slope of the hp vs speed curve gets steeper with speed. The Raven's...

How to make plaid accelerate faster ?

Horsepower is the product of torque and rpm. That is, torque is Horsepower divided by rpm, so both horsepower and rpm affect torque. Below a certain rpm for a given horsepower the torque becomes greater than the traction the tires can provide. At this point the pre-programmed torque is just...

How to make plaid accelerate faster ?

Tesla has a pre-programmed torque curve for launch that's designed for 19" summer tires on asphalt. Or at least it was on the Raven. This torque curve keeps the tires on the edge of their traction limit, until the torque is limited by horsepower and speed. For small amounts of tire slip, the...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

30 lbs is 0.02 sec. I'm not sure what meaningful means. If you win by 0.001 seconds, you win.
  26. T

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

I know 0.02 seconds doesn't seem like a lot, but it's 4.4 feet at 150 mph. Even if there are other random events that affect the performance, on average you'll get to the 1/4 mile 4.4 feet ahead. Races are won in the thousandths of a second, after all.

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

Not to mention the greater rotational inertia off spinning up the transmission and engine. In first gear this rotational inertia can increase the effective mass of the car by 35 percent.

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

In Denver when the temperature is 90 degrees F the density altitude could be around 9000 Ft. At that altitude the air density is 76% that at sea level. If I integrate the net force from the motor minus rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag for that difference in density over 1/4 mile, I get...

POLL: vibration felt when slightly accelerating refresh Mode S Plaid or LR

1025 miles on my model s plaid, and it just started to vibrate. Also noticed some mild lugging like an ice in too high of a gear. Happens with mild acceleration around 40 mph. I had the issue with my half shafts on my previous model s, but the vibration was different. It was at a lower frequency...

Where is the gps antenna on raven cars?

This was years ago, and the manual had new language about obtaining speed limits using the camera. In order to confirm this, I wanted to prevent the car from using its gps database to obtain the speed limits.

    Discount offer

Don't you have to place an order on a car to request a trade-in quote? I guess you could order a Model 3 and a Models S to see if they quoted different trade-in values. It'd cost $500 to find out though. Even then I think you have to wait until a vin is assigned, so unless both vins were...

    Discount offer

Forget about my particular situation. No-one is actually getting a $3000 discount. Since they require you to trade your car in, they just lower what they offer you for your trade-in by $3000. This is why at a normal dealership you shouldn't tell them you have a trade until you negotiate the...

    Discount offer

You seem to be missing my point. I'm saying it isn't a loyalty program at all. It's a sales spiel. If it was about owner loyalty, you should get the discount if you currently own a Tesla, even if you don't trade it in. They require the trade in so they can recover the discount through the trade...
  34. T

    Discount offer

This was my question: "If it's a true loyalty program, why wouldn't every current owner who's buying a new car now get the discount?" They don't. They have to trade in their current vehicle. Why would that be?
  35. T

    Discount offer

I got a loyalty discount on my current Model S which is leased. I got the ludicrous option for free. I guess loyal lease holders aren't really loyal anymore? Or it's not really loyalty, It's a typical car sales scam.
  36. T

    Discount offer

I'm returning my current Model S lease vehicle and leasing a new one. I called and asked if I was entitled to the $3000 "Ownership Loyalty Offer". I was told it's only for trade-ins. It's the old trade-in shell game. They tell you they'll discount your purchase only to subtract it from what they...

Do you see your wipers from seat?

I have a Nov. 2021 Model Y LR, and I can see the wiper arm from the drivers seat. The car has been sitting for 24 hrs in the garage. They were set to automatic, so I turned them off and waited 5 minutes. I could still see it. Also tried carwash mode and still visible. Part of the passenger...

    FSD Beta v11.x

I agree that using neural nets to generate the heuristic is POC.
  40. T

    FSD Beta v11.x

I took all that to mean that the Euclidean heuristic is being replaced with a better heuristic that is generated by the NN and used in the tree search. That doesn't preclude the coarse search algorithm from using a mcts with the Euclidean distance or some similar weight function.

    Home charging advice

There is an adapter available that converts the Tesla proprietary wall connector to the standard J1772 connector. With this you can use the Tesla wall connector to charge other evs. This is not the adapter that Tesla sells to convert level 2 chargers to the Tesla connector on the car.
  42. T

    FSD Beta v11.x

They might be using Monte Carlo tree search for the coarse search part. It's supposedly the state of the art for heuristic path planning searches. The coarse search avoids local minima but can be too slow on a fine grid. Once the coarse search finds a convex domain, the continuous optimization...

    10.8 FSD

Elon says they are at the end for their current method of generating a vector space from the camera images. According to him, FSD Beta V11 will have a whole new neural net that generates the vector space directly. All these 10.x release just seem to be stalling until they can get V11 out.

On limited access highways it will be the same NOA whether you disable FSD Beta or not. You could temporarily opt out of Beta to return to the production version of NOA. It can take some time to get the new download after opting out, though.

  49. T

    10.8 FSD

It's not. It's coming in V11 which Elon says is another major rewrite of the neural nets. Apparently the building of the vector space is currently done in procedural code from a "bag of points with probabilities" the neural net generates. He says V11 will build the vector space directly using...
