Patient, but ... really? CT clamps installed incorrectly?

I had this with my installation yesterday. Sun went down and my solar was powering the grid. I went into the installation wizard, and for the "site" meters checked the flip boxes. Saved, restarted the Powerwall, all monitoring was as expected. I even through off the mains to see if it was...

Is Telsa proposing the right thing for my Powerwall installation?

Yeah, the quote with installation for a second unit is about $10k, which is not worth it in any universe where I can calculate ROI. Obviously the only scenario I'm trying to cover is a post-hurricane extended outage, and even then it's hard to say if that will be a thing. Six years living in...

Is Telsa proposing the right thing for my Powerwall installation?

Long time listener, first time caller in the energy category. Last year I had Tesla install a 10 kW solar system, and it was a pretty terrible experience. One inverter was wired incorrectly, the other was configured incorrectly, so I was actually capturing less than half of what the system could...

    Supercharger — Kingsland, GA

I used this one last Monday and today. I honestly didn't know about it, as I planned my Orlando to NC trip before it was on my radar. It makes the Savannah to St. Augustine run more comfortable if you like to drive 80 and have a 70D, for sure. Because the charging is slower going at the top, it...

    Supercharger - Greenville, SC

This is a pretty weird location, a good country block away from the food and retail. That wasn't a big deal yesterday, but it was chilly last Monday! Not very pedestrian friendly when you get up to the shopping area, either. We met some people there on Monday whose car quit while charging, had...

    Supercharger - Greenville, SC

And let's not punish in a way that causes distance travelers passing through stress because locals are parked there all of the time.

Anyone saved from an accident by autobrake?

While the alarm can help warn you (I've heard it once), the actual braking that comes after at best is intended to reduce your speed before impact. It says that in the manual.

    Supercharger - Greenville, SC

That's crazy, the thing with the previous site. Crossing my fingers for this one, because it means I could do Santee, SC to Waynesville, NC (where I can plug in at my in-laws) about an hour faster because I won't need to bounce through Charlotte. More interesting terrain, too! If they could just...

    Supercharger - Asheville, NC

Indeed, thanks. I'm not optimistic about a Thanksgiving time frame to get it up when I'm passing through, but I'm sure I'll use it on subsequent visits to the area.

Model S 90D Test Drive - Indescribable, Stupid Fun

It's funny, I've driven the P models, but my "lowly" 70D is crazy fun too. The full on launches are fun, but really it's the ability to jump at a red light, up a freeway ramp, or even just to mash it so you can pass, often under 60 mph, that makes every little maneuver fun. I kind of had a hint...

    Firmware 6.2

I work with software that is at worst responsible for a few million dollars in business activity over the course of a few weeks, and we update way less frequently. This stuff moves 4,800 pounds of electric sex as fast as 150 mph. I'm with you.

Southeast US road trip, minor anxiety

I'm not particularly concerned about any of the distances, because I've already done 200 mostly highway mile driving. But the availability and uptime sounds generally solid. Thanks, everyone!
  13. Jeff P

Southeast US road trip, minor anxiety

Yeah, I'm sure it will be fine. I haven't heard of many availability issues on this side of the country. I'm not worried about Waynesville itself, as I'll be there for a week and there are a few places I can go, ditto for Asheville. My real-life range on a full charge is about 220 miles, but...

Southeast US road trip, minor anxiety

The family and I are planning to take our first road trip in our 70D around Thanksgiving. It's Orlando to Waynesville, NC, stopping at the superchargers in St. Augustine, Savannah, Santee SC and Charlotte. Waynesville doesn't have an ideal charging situation, but we'll be mostly staying with my...

    Why am I the only one who got a S70 - not a 70D

The non-D was announced about two weeks after I ordered a 70D, but if I would have waited, I honestly might have just gone with the "lower" model and save $5k. Performance is neat, but I've never been a car guy (I've driven Corollas and Prii for the last 20 years). Last year we bought a Leaf...

Honest question... why are people so obsessed with the cellular speed? What are people doing with it that they're so intent on having the fastest possible?

Owners delivery stories, photos and first impressions

What everyone else said. Any decent electrician can get it done. In my case, I had a 20-foot run from the main breaker box in the garage to the side near the back of the car. Hilariously, the radar around the car gets really pissed at virtually everything in my garage and orders me to stop at...

What Swag did Tesla give you at delivery?

I assume the key things are standard issue. They even warned potential for crackage if you drop them without it. We got a free T-shirt for our 5-year-old, which is pretty cool. I'm sure jackets are neat and all, but you know, we live in Florida, and it's not jacket weather most of the time.

    Supercharging letter from Tesla 8-13-2015

I'm just another blowhard with an opinion, but while the tone of the letter wasn't great, I assume that the intent was to remind people of the long distance driving goal made possible by superchargers. I pair that with reports here where it's hard to get a charge because of excessive traffic in...

    Appearance on Comedians in Cars

It's a fantastic show. What a great thing for Seinfeld to have the luxury of experimenting and doing whatever the hell he wants. Incidentally, my wife and I were talking about doing a short film mocking, er, paying homage to the show, featuring our Model S.

Our pearl white 70D was a little slow getting here to Orlando (about three weeks via rail to Birmingham, then truck to The OC), but it was great to have the bulk of the work done before even getting to the store. We did our last ACH the day before, and only had to sign a few things, including...

Tesla hacked and shut off while driving (with physical access to the car at first)

I'm glad to see that what I guessed in the previous thread was essentially true, in that you need physical access to the car, and there is a barrier between the touch screen stuff and the stuff that makes the car go. It's less of a "hack" and more like needing the key to do something to an...

Windows Phone Tesla App - Please vote "me too" here if you are a WP user

Tesla Companion is pretty cool. That said... Microsoft open sources its tool for porting iOS apps to Windows | The Verge I wonder if this will motivate anyone at Tesla to consider getting it done. I decompiled the official Android version and it's not particularly exotic. Not that I don't...

what is the highest resolution of audio file e.g.24bit/192kHz for premium sound sys?

I think the thing that makes me even more skeptical is that self-labeled "audiophiles" insist that a $300 ethernet cable can transmit bits better than a $3 cable, and that the resulting bits are "colored" with defects at the other end. I mean, there is no place between "on" and "off" for bits.

Does the UMC fit in the wall charger replacement organizer?

Honestly, $25 is not really a cost concern considering the check I need to write for the car. :)
  30. Jeff P

what is the highest resolution of audio file e.g.24bit/192kHz for premium sound sys?

I think the bit rate is fine, but I could do without the dynamic range compression on some channels. It's not as bad as most terrestrial radio, but it isn't good. I too have freakish range, but I don't believe that has anything to do with the encoding quality or perceivable loss.

  32. Jeff P

what is the highest resolution of audio file e.g.24bit/192kHz for premium sound sys?

Yes, this. I get mine next week, with the upgraded audio, but I honestly got it because I need XM. Well, I don't need it, but I hate being without it. I've seen these debates countless times, and the science and related testing has demonstrated over and over again that there is a threshold...

Tesla West Coast Road Trip (2,000+ miles, 3 ferry rides, $0 in gas) & Pictures

Yeah, people in Cleveland and Orlando give me crap about that. "Oh, Seattle? How did you live with all of that rain?" No, actually both of those cities get more or about the same rain annually. And Seattle gets nearly zero all summer. I have to explain that your grass will die if you don't water it.
  34. Jeff P

what is the highest resolution of audio file e.g.24bit/192kHz for premium sound sys?

The Tesla is quiet, but honestly, even at home, you're not going to be able to tell the difference compared to something of lower quality. Humans don't have that kind of perception.

Slightly different take on the 70D vs. 85D debate

I think there has to be a level of acceptance that not only do we not know what the market will decide, but buying cars is a losing proposition any way you look at it. You're going to pay for the privilege of driving a Tesla no matter what you buy. Maybe you can eek-out a little more value if...

Tesla West Coast Road Trip (2,000+ miles, 3 ferry rides, $0 in gas) & Pictures

I lived in Seattle for a couple of years, when you could spot Tesla Roadsters here and there. Loved living there (I lived on the east side), and miss it every day. Big fan of Portland as well. The PNW in general is one of my favorite parts of the country. Always love reports like this, because...

Security from the frontlines... (OR How to Hack A Model S talk at DEFCON)

You would think, right? Believe it or not, that kind of automation is rare outside of the really good software shops. It's downright non-existent in a lot of what I call "big dumb companies," where software is not their primary business (or at least, it is but they don't think so). Again, I...

    Mount Transponder - Toll Roads

Wow... those seem really intrusive. We had something similar in Ohio for the turnpike there. Here in Florida we have little stickers you put on the glass, easily hidden behind the rear-view. They're five bucks and you throw them away if you sell the car.

Buying a Tesla for all the wrong reasons?!

"B" mode is intended to simulate down-shifting for the purpose of engine braking, if you're driving around Waimea Canyon, for example. Obviously in regular drive mode, braking normally squeezes the brakes but also engages the regen. When I lived in Seattle, there were a number of roads where I...

Security from the frontlines... (OR How to Hack A Model S talk at DEFCON)

But that's kind of the point... I'm not convinced that the car would respond to anything other than Tesla's servers for actual control functions. I worked on a system like that last year. Sure you could likely get in front of the target system, but it wouldn't listen to you unless you could...

Buying a Tesla for all the wrong reasons?!

Yeah, I only make 1/4 of what you make and that thinking is not even on the fringe of my brain. I think you're way over-thinking it, dude. You can't take it with you. :)
  44. Jeff P

Security from the frontlines... (OR How to Hack A Model S talk at DEFCON)

Well, not necessarily. A lot of stuff has a public IP address, but it doesn't mean that you can get in there and mess around. As a software architect, I would probably build a lot of security into the communication between the car and Tesla's servers for control issues, even if none of them are...

Cost of ownership spreadsheet -- need help to find

I played the numbers game all kinds of different ways, but at the end of the day, a Model S costs more because I would never buy any "luxury" car. It's not even the issue of excess and perceived vanity. It just seems like a technological step backward in energy efficiency when I've been driving...

Buying a Tesla for all the wrong reasons?!

Certainly, it does depend on what electrons cost where you live. It's about 13 cents per kWh where I live (the first 1000 cost one rate per month, above that a higher rate, mostly going over in the summer months). That's the going rate on area ChargePoint stations as well. It's just my opinion...

Sigs not compatible with battery swap

This thread reminds me of the online discussion around every product Apple has made in the last 10 years. Well, except for the part that we're talking about an expensive car.
