Correct. The TPMS sensor is the packaged as the air valve. So you'll have to remove the tire to get to the TPMS sensor/air valve. You can order new ones from the service center for $50 each -- very reasonable. They come in silver or black color.

I've had 2014 P85D loaners which had the cubby. Maybe newer cars have a different design that doesn't have the cubby hole?

My car is MC red w/ tan leather and black alcantara. I prefer this three-color palette to the four-color palette (with the white alcantara). The black flows well through the interior. But to answer the OP, yeah, the black alcantara is a recent addition.
