It's completely normal, mine has it too. It's just sound dampening material. It's meant to reduce reverberations around the rear wheel wells. The trunk is particularly bad at reverberating road vibrations (though most of the road noise seem to be transferred to the vehicle by the coilovers)

It might work well if the car is at home, but I could see it become annoying really fast in a busy parking lot. I think ultimately it would just end up annoying people and bring negative attention to your car, which increases risks of it being keyed out of spite, cameras be damned.

Would love to know the results of this as well. I have these coming in the mail though it'll probably be at least a few weeks before I get them. I can do without the break lights if they have quirks since the stock reflectors aren't lights, but I do really like the signalling effect.
