The Rules of Model S Road Tripping

These rules were my bible when I got my first S P85+ back in Aug '13. I was grateful for them then and I'm still grateful for them now. I made my first road trip from Boston to DC in November '13, plotting carefully in advance, drove 55 or even 50 mph in the right-hand lane on I-95, turned off...

Discussion of Net Neutrality and Ars Technica

Hi, @Cosmacelf, Are you presenting your Net Neutrality article as a dispassionate, factual analysis or as an opinion piece? I might (or might not) agree with some of your individual points or even your entire conclusion; but IMHO your article is an opinion essay, so I don't understand how you...

Discussion of Net Neutrality and Ars Technica

Which? For instance, I respect Ars Technica. But the devil is very much in the details; smaller publications are not guaranteed to be more insightful and rigorous. Thanks, Alan

    Screw you, Model 3

Great to hear -- thanks for sharing! Like at least one other, I am also curious how you spent your $200 on maintenance. Thanks, Alan

    Tesla moments

A different kind of Tesla moment: My youngest son, age 16, is taking driver's ed. Virtually. 3 hrs/day, 5 days/wk, 2 wks, not including road time with the instructor. He learns, mostly by rote. He takes written tests. He does really well... probably because the questions are of the form...

More TSBs out there than I thought for my car

Hello again, @jeremymc7, I phrased my reply poorly and completely forgot to mention that I do, in fact, agree with the point you are making: that financially, the incentive to pursue TSBs lines up in a way for traditional dealerships that it does not line up for a manufacturer that also...

More TSBs out there than I thought for my car

Hi, @jeremymc7, I can see you've been a Tesla guy for a long time, which in my book means you're earned your opinions. :-) FYI, wanted to offer a counter data-point: across my experiences with 4 Teslas (2 MS, 2M3) since '13, I've found Tesla service to be extraordinarily friendly and willing...

Recommendations, please: kayaks, trailers, hitches, advice for Model 3

Wife just came over, wanted to know what I was doing. Showed her the thread; she's blown away. :-) Great, useful, actionable responses -- thanks! She really does have to think about what *kind* of kayak she wants. Most summers, she and the kid kayak across/around a pretty calm lake. In...

Wow! Just checked back and found all these interesting posts. @SageBrush, @MacGreiner, @timp123, @Urbancowboy, @KenC, @GreenMtnM3, @IraB, @jrweiss98020 -- thank you! I just told The Wife that I had gotten some interesting and useful responses... I'm going to point her to this thread so she...

Recommendations, please: kayaks, trailers, hitches, advice for Model 3

@SageBrush, that's a really good point. I have attempted to make that point with The Boss. She's a better driver than I am, although perhaps I'm setting the bar quite low. I wish I knew a better alternative than the trailer. Two kayaks probably don't even both fit on a roof rack. Thanks, Alan

Recommendations, please: kayaks, trailers, hitches, advice for Model 3

Dear TMC, My boss, The Wife, wants two kayaks. She plans to awaken, check the weather, then impulsively zoom off in her Model 3 to go kayaking. Along with our 15-year old... a car full of sass & moxie. Please tell me your thoughts on: (1) Trailer -- what trailer would you recommend? I'm...

Charging at a Villa in Italy

I just noticed that you're going UK to Italy; so you should talk to Tesla about whether you need to get a different connector for your charging cable to connect into the house electric supply. You should be OK for the Tesla destination chargers / high powered wall chargers and Superchargers.

Charging at a Villa in Italy

You may need an extension cord. Alternately, look for nearby hotels that have Tesla high-powered wall chargers / destination chargers. The upper-end hotels are likely spots. Some hotels will let you come charge for free; others, if you dine there; others, if you stay overnight. Alan

    Funniest Tesla Question Thread

One other thought about interacting with people asking about EVs: I try to give an emotional answer even if I wind up foregoing an opportunity to give a factual answer. Funniest Tesla Question Thread

Love these stories... :-) I used to play a little game (Model S) where I'd ask people where they think the engine is located... "front, of course". So I'd open the frunk. Eyes pop! OK, must be a car with a rear-engine drive. Walk to the back. Open the trunk. Eyes bug out! Then I would...

Customer Service Nightmare at Tyson's Corner, Virginia

My parents (Jan '18 Model 3 LRR+PUP) and I ('13 P85+, '16 P100D, Sep '18 Model 3 Perf) and I have had good service experiences from 2013 - 2018 across Watertown and Dedham in MA and Rockville MD and (maybe only one time?) in Tyson's Corner. They've worked really hard to make things right...

VW Fallout: $2.0 Billion for ZEV Infrastructure Buildout

The guy writing the analyses for carbase.com seems... inexperienced? Unwilling to reference vehicles outside the segmentation that this organization reports on? Tesla Model 3 is slotted in as a "Premium Mid-sized" vehicle but the analysis in that segment and others shows no indication that M3...

VW Fallout: $2.0 Billion for ZEV Infrastructure Buildout

Mind-boggling! To do this in the middle of Dieselgate... I'm out of words... I used to be an Audi owner and my wife used to have a VW Golf. Now we own Teslas and I simply can't imagine what circumstances would have to arise for me to be willing to voluntarily purchase an Audi, VW, Porsche or...

Love Tesla. Love my car. Wish Tesla would please fix the USB Audio Player.

@OP, thank you for fighting this fight. I've read this thread but nowhere near the entire parent thread, so maybe this observation has already been made: Resuming does not work correctly for streaming music, either! I listen to a lot of streaming music (gave up on USB, so many hoops to jump...

Paint correction and Xpel application near Rockville, MD Service Center?

Hi, @ebirck, Congrats! I don’t have my notes handy. I think I spent around $5k for everything. (Keep in mind that was Dec ‘16.) See this post for details: Paint correction and Xpel application near Rockville, MD Service Center? The interior protection stuff has probably served me well as...

    I appreciate the TMC people

Regardless of the Keydiver v. Daniel issue, I love the opener for this mod: Never attempt this activity. I appreciate the TMC people

Hi, @spacepod, IMHO, a very large fraction of TMC members started out as fans or future owners before becoming owners. For many of us, it was a way to maintain the appearance of self-control while waiting for our vehicles to be delivered. There are people on here who waited for YEARS, not...

    I appreciate the TMC people

Hi, @woddisgood, I hope you are continuing to enjoy your Tesla! While I recognize that there are rich, entitled folks in many places, maybe I've missed those folks here on TMC. Or maybe it's bias on my part, as I guess some people would put me in an uncomfortable category based on me being on...

    Nuclear power

I read the article: lots of bad stuff. Far less clear about causation, though (and the article notes that at the bottom). Given all the other stuff we've been putting into the environment during the same period, more rigorous studies would be a boon. I get it that adequate studies haven't...

Maryland - Support EVSE Rebates & EV Tax Credits

Love the tracker. Thanks for the effort you put into it! Alan P.S. One point of confusion for me: Clean Cars Act of 2019 shows up in multiple places, listed against multiple bills. One of which (HB1246, DFH, EV Tax Credit) is still actively making progress while the others appear to be...

what the heck happened to the reservation list?

@electracity, @adaptabl - good points. But both of these have serious business & financial implications, if true.... and if the effects are large enough to swing production from a roughly 4-6 month backlog to a 4 week backlog. I would think these changes would be material and reportable...

what the heck happened to the reservation list?

@Waiting43 - exactly!! So the reservation list should be even slower to drain! I am not (knowingly) a Tesla shareholder. But if I were a Tesla shareholder, I think I'd want to know about major changes to the reservations list, as there are large financial implications. And business...
  37. P

what the heck happened to the reservation list?

@adaptabl, while I can't speak for all the other incentives at the state level that may have come and gone, there's still half the federal tax credit available for the first half of the year. $3750 rather than $7500. So while I agree with you that some people have been on the razor's edge of...

what the heck happened to the reservation list?

Love this analysis. Don't forget Semi and Roadster reservations. Those consume a lot more dollars per vehicle, probably driving us below 321K and into the 200s. It doesn't feel unreasonable to me to think that at this point Tesla might have chewed through 40-50% of its Model 3 reservation...

My experience with Solar in NJ

They are qualifying houses here in the DC area for Tesla solar tile roofs. I know this because I have two reservations for solar tile roofs. Unfortunately, one of the houses in question doesn't have enough roof area. The second house in question is still uncertain as they haven't yet been...

what the heck happened to the reservation list?

OK, so some factors with reservations are: worldwide, right-hand drive, countries Tesla doesn't even yet have a presence in, finances don't yet permit purchase. All seem reasonable to me. But shouldn't there still be a significant backlog of US base Model 3 reservations? Out of 380K-400K...
  41. P

what the heck happened to the reservation list?

There were 400,000+ reservations for Model 3s queued up. Even after deliveries in last '17 and '18 (LRR, Performance, etc.), I had the impression there will still a couple of hundred thousand reservations left. Now, the base model is available and it looks like all M3s are available in...

    Model 3 Performance Winter Tires

Ex-Boston driver. Another vote for Nokian Hakkapollittas (from Finland), first R2s and then R8s. Used them from winter 2013 through winter 2016 on a 2013 Model S P85+, then on my P100D from winter 2016 until now. I like driving in snow and these tires have been great for me in snow, ice and...

    The GREAT Gamble: Online Sales

    Tesla Model 3 Moments

Are there a lot of Teslas around Houston? Maybe they are humdrum ordinary now, as in parts of CA. Here in Maryland/DC, there are a TON of 3s on the street but both our S and our 3 still get attention. And whenever we have house parties, there are people who want test drives. :-) Alan

VW Fallout: $2.0 Billion for ZEV Infrastructure Buildout

I agree that there is something weird about CARB's focus on hydrogen, especially given that most (all?) commercially available hydrogen generates a lot of extra carbon as part of the steam methane reforming (SMR) cycle. If I recall correctly, @McRat believes there is some kind of corruption...
