    Autonomous Car Progress

Not all of that map is in safe areas. I wonder what the cars response would or should be if one person came off the curb to stop the car and then others robbed the occupants, they would seem to be sitting ducks trapped in a car with no where to go.

    No radar, no problem?

I would think radar or other safety control should sit above autopilot or driver to make sure neither did does something wrong and it it the one to listen to in the case of a conflict not autopilot or fsd, just like it currently can override the driver it should override autopilot or fsd

[UPDATED] 2 die in Tesla crash - NHTSA reports driver seat occupied

Harris County Constable Precinct 4 deputies said the vehicle was traveling at a high speed when it failed to negotiate a cul-de-sac turn, ran off the road and hit the tree. KPRC 2 reporter Deven Clarke spoke to one man’s brother-in-law who said he was taking the car out for a spin with his best...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

Yes the software did decide to run off the road, it went through a decision tree to choose the appropriate action to take for the current road condition. The algorithm did not give up and transfer control back to the driver or continue to go straight, it decided that veering left was the correct...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

because lack of seatbelts increases injury to the driver and is not the same as the software deciding to veer off the road and injure a third party requiring constant attention to override bad decisions. And if people want to compared it cruise control your talking about a short period of time...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

And the 64 thousand dollar question will be if the manufacturers will be held partially liable to ensure the driver is engaged while autopilot or driver assist type systems are active, its to soon to tell but with all the model 3 sales its only a matter of time until a third party is injured and...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

this NTSB report kinda says it all, “read the manual” and “pay attention” may not be enough to avoid lawsuits and taking measures to insure compliance may be needed From LA Times I think: “The death of Model S driver Joshua Brown in May 2016 spurred a NTSB report in September in which the...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

For the purposes of public safety I am less concerned about coverage and more concerned about assigning liability. I do not think “read the manual” and “always pay attention” will be enough to shield automakers. The amount of time before ignoring the warning and an accident could be hours...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

I dont have I dont have either, just a curious observer, but was only commenting on the best driver awareness technology no matter who it is from would be seem to be preferred if you are going to insist the driver needs to be aware and make them liable. If there is technology to do this and...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

I would disagree here, unless extra sensors completely eliminates the need to pay attention (full autonomy) you would just make the problem worse by having more people lulled into a false sense of safety and your vehicle will still take an action to kill you or others. I feel the problem is that...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

true but that is the same as distracted driving now, I cant disengage from paying attention for many minutes at a time or more. plus I think there needs to be a clean way to assign liability and if the defense is you must pay attention then whatever is the best way to determine that would seem...

why do you like hand on wheel better? I dont see how you can infer any level of paying attention ftom a hand on the wheel but it seems you could if you could monitor eyes on the road
  14. C

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

the thing I like most supercruise is the “eyes on the road” monitoring since roads can change overnight due to construction, weather, etc. until we are at full autonomy keep your eyes on the road or disengage self driving!!!

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

the reality here is the tesla took an action to cause a fatality, if the drivers attention is a requirement to override this action then the GM supercruise seems a better supervisor since it monitors if you have your eyes on the road, who cares if your hands are on the steering wheel

Model X Autopilot Problem - Pretty Scary

OK that makes more sense, I would suggest that Tesla does not allow anyone to activate the autopilot until they actually agree to be part of an unpaid untrained test pool that understands they will assume all liability for any defects in the autopilot software, or that tesla compensate the...

Model X Autopilot Problem - Pretty Scary

while I agree that everyone should pay attention I do not share your position that everyone on the road will and if they don't it's their problem If the thousands of people a day that share the road with me were you I probably would not worry but since 30k people a year die in car accidents and...

Another Model X crash, driver says autopilot was engaged

As self driving software goes from 0% reliable to 100% reliable, the amount of people trusting the software to not fail will also go from 0% to 100% There will always be people who will become distracted more than they should and that is a problem, Google figured this type of natural human...

    Ugh. Another Model S fire - 2013-11-06

Sounds like the Tesla should not be the car with the lowest ground clearance or the battery pack will hit everything that other cars go over. To reduce these problems the ground clearance should be raised to let other cars clear the items off the road before the Tesla shows up or the Tesla...

    June 20th Speculation

What if you think of it like cell phone roaming charges. In you home area you charge at home. Tesla Motors Stockholder Meeting - Tuesday, June 4

Actually could Tesla use their service center which already gives loaner cars that can be purchased to sell cars? Could they rent the loaners out for a day for people to "test drive"? Then people could buy them online.

Market reaction to a Metal-Air Hybrid Battery Announcement

It's kwh if you are talking about energy, I was talking about power or what kind of driving experience, the aluminum-air battery should be able to discharge at a rate that is not a trickle charge but supports the full driving experience of the vehicle. If aggressive typical driving (like 85 mph...

Market reaction to a Metal-Air Hybrid Battery Announcement

I think a luxury car with a metal-air battery range extender should have no compromises , no limp home, no 60 mph limit but 80-85 for as long as there is charge, just as the Model S is now. This seems to be about 40 Kw continuous not the 15 Kw some people are proposing, or about 500 watts/mile...

Market reaction to a Metal-Air Hybrid Battery Announcement

This is my bet as well Here are some best case implementations I put in earlier, I know these are theoretical only but what the heck Aluminum Air battery has a theoretical specific energy of 8.14 KWh/Kg and aluminum is about $2200/metric ton. In theory the range extender battery could use about...

Model S can be recharged faster than filling a gas tank.

Given the huge amount of power for supercharging in a few minutes, the fact that the current battery is over 1000 lbs, and the patent positions tesla has in a dual mode metal-air/li-ion battery solution I think I'm back to a new hybrid battery where the aluminum portion is exchanged and paid...

Model S can be recharged faster than filling a gas tank.

240 kw or even 500 kw is not enough to meet the "model s can recharge faster than filling a gas tank" li am assuming we are not to interpret this as a 10% charge and a 100 gallon gas tank but at least an 80% charge in 5 minutes
  33. C

Model S can be recharged faster than filling a gas tank.

I would be surprised by anything available in the next few months to allow recharging at the rate of faster than filling a fuel tank, or 5 minutes. Model S can be recharged faster than filling a gas tank.

Of course the super-supercharger option would be viable if they are close to qualifying a li-ion/graphene chemistry battery. The papers have these at the same energy density and 10x the charge time. A nice paper from Elon/JB would be the current state of the art and near future of batteries for...

Model S can be recharged faster than filling a gas tank.

Quote does not say anything about current model S owners - - - Updated - - - The Aluminum-air battery is small and not rechargeable and is compact/lightweight. It is meant to be used then removed to recycle. It could be made as removable modules for long trips that are exchanged by the driver...

Model S can be recharged faster than filling a gas tank.

My bet is on Metal-Air exchange battery while keeping Li-Ion main battery like Phinergy. Tesla has many patents on a Metal-Air/Li-Ion battery approach. Aluminum Air battery has a theoretical specific energy of 8.14 KWh/Kg and aluminum is about $2200/metric ton. In theory the range extender...
