Defending Tesla has ended a Friendship of mine

Wait, is that Elrond? Looks like Elrond. Always wondered what he ended up doing once they all sailed away from the Gray Havens. I guess now we know. Hangs out on the Internet, trolling.

Security implications from setting your home address in the Nav system?

... Yes, I think I will drive to the nearest police station, and tell the car that THIS is my home. That way, if any thief ever takes the car and navigates home, I can just call 911 and say "hang tight, the perp is on his way and should be there in a few minutes." + UPDATE: I did not create...

Tesla Lemon Model S owner Rebuttal to Tesla's Blog Post

I like Megna's concise commentary on the fuses and the tamper-resistant tape. Also his commentary on the Volvo lawsuit was quite insightful. Oh, wait, there was no commentary on the fuses and the tamper-resistant tape or the Volvo lawsuit.

Three times now, I have tapped "DON'T ASK ME AGAIN" and . . . you got it . . . it keeps asking me. Progress, 5.9-style.

    Firmware 5.9

One interesting thing w/ 5.9: I'm noticing the car is now locking the charge port cover when I close it, like it used to, pre-5.8. In the 5.8 era, each morning I'd pull out the UMC cable and close the charge port cover to no locking sound. Only when I got in the car and turned the car on a...

Mine was in a little black bag in the far back sub-trunk area, I think the UMC was in the bag originally.

    6.0 - Public Beta

I'm really hoping 6.0 finally does something about the deplorable integration of music playlists, artists, albums, songs, etc., with the Tesla entertainment system. I use my iPhone's Music app -- that is, when I can stand it -- to listen to my music in the car. But it's a hassle and then some...

    Firmware 5.9

Nope, can't be. They're right down the street, here in the village of La Jolla. Only place I have ever, ever plugged in here is home. So I have no idea what these other things are or why they're showing up. Yeah they must be inaccurate GPS locations. But jeez, they're really inaccurate. Like...

    Firmware 5.9

This morning, first morning with 5.9, I was curious what the range would say after a routine overnight charge. Normally when I get up and check the car, the 80% is 197mi. When I checked this morning it was 209 mi. It may just be a tweaked algorithm, but I like. :-) - - - Updated - - - On...

    2014 1 QTR predictions/results

We also don't seem to have any very recent, anecdotal evidence from factory tours re the weekly production rates. Either the NDAs are doing their job, or Tesla has hidden those "this week / last week" production count screens that used to be here and there, or the tour attendees just aren't...

    Firmware 5.9

Took car in for Tank Mode installation and they offered to install 5.9 as well. 2 hours later, car's all done, washed and cleaned, and as he hands me the keyfob he says, now, you'll have to lower the car as it is now at the highest setting. I paused, looked at him, tried to figure out what he...

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2014

I was wondering if the business lease news was a hint that individual orders are leveling off, either due to softening demand or due to the approaching release of Model X, and some would-be S buyers are holding out to the X which is in theory less than a year away.

    Firmware 5.9

I can confirm this. Took my car in to get the Tank Mode titanium shield installed, and the service guy emailed me back after confirming the appointment, mentioning that "we've noticed you've had some concerns about the loud hum at over 70mph" which is something I posted here a few days before...

    Did I miss anything important?

The crystal clear sound system is not, imho, going to make much difference for listening to streaming or other broadcast sources, but it does help for high-quality digital recordings, either 320k mp3s or FLAC type raw audio. I love the sound system and could not imagine buying the car without...

Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

Hmm, on my 1700-mile SF Bay Area trip last month, I noticed the car noise was much louder and at times borderline obnoxious. Happens on long stretches of I-5, out in the boonies of Central CA, where the speed limit is 70 and everyone whooshes by at 80-90+. I had it in cruise control between...

Folks who stretched: Will you do it again given another chance or regret buying Tesla

For me the S is by far the most expensive car I've ever owned. My previous was a maxed out, every whistle and bell imaginable Audi Q5 which cost me $4000/yr in gas to drive. Yes it was a stretch to buy the Model S BUT two factors made it a no-brainer: 1) Unlike any other car-purchase decision...

    Interesting night at the Supercharger

The only supercharger I routinely charge to 100% (or very very close to it) is Fremont. With every other supercharger, I charge just what I need, plus a little buffer, to get to the next supercharger. For every subsequent long trip I shave the charge amounts down as I get more comfortable...

Interesting counter piece on the WSJ editorial

I'd love to hear the stories about when Elon apparently worked as an intern for Microsoft. Yes, Microsoft. In Canada in the 1990s. Apparently this chapter of his life has been quietly removed from the canonical biography, but I don't know why.

    Interesting night at the Supercharger

Del Mar to Tejon supercharger is 186 miles according to Google Maps. La Jolla to Tejon supercharger is 196 miles. But, one burns more than 10 miles of range on the battery just driving out of hilly La Jolla onto I-5 then up to Del Mar. More like 20mi range. So yeah, it's a little dicey...

    Interesting night at the Supercharger

Problem w/ just looking at a map is that it doesn't convey well the topography. I would love to skip Hawthorne or SJC when headed to Tejon, but because of the 50mi of hilly/mountainous terrain on the way to Tejon superchargers, one has to do a pit stop somewhere along the way from San Diego. If...

Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

This is one of the consequences of a car whose firmware gets updated all the time by the manufacturer. In the ICE world if a car started making weird snap sounds after months of ownership you would wonder what's wrong and prolly take the car in for service. In the computer-on-skateboard world...

    Interesting night at the Supercharger

Most of my Hawthorne experiences have been negative -- either long waits because of the crowd (mostly locals! argh) or very low miles/hour charge once you *do* wind up getting a charger. The location is bad, I've pulled in there well after midnight and found all kinds of shady types lingering...

The 1-volt, now-it's-there, now-it-isn't dance, right after plugging in UMC

... I'm sure this is a FAQ but I didn't know where to look so here goes. Often, when I plug my UMC into my NEMA 14-50 at home, I notice on the 17" screen that the car seems to be sipping tiny bits of electricity for a few minutes from the plug. Understand, I have my car programmed to charge...

    Model S Software/Firmware wishlist

B-but, don't we already have that? Whenever I get home and pull up to garage the screen automatically shows me the Homelink profile I created to open the garage. I tap and presto, garage opens. Works great. What am I missing? Do you want garage or gate to automatically open?

Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

I've reported this issue before, both in the TMC forum and to the local Tesla service shop. I have an update. First, the problem, or, mystery. Lately, as in past few months, most mornings when I come down to the garage, unplug the UMC from the charge port, and manually close the charge port...

A senior tesla executive's comforting answer to concerns re: "loss of range"

If I drive like a saint, observing the speed limit and carefully accelerating and so on, no matter what I do, I get over 300Wh/mi. I don't think I've ever been able to get it below 300 for any length of time. I mostly drive local, and it's hilly. I had the same problem with ICEs: I routinely...

Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

This has been my experience. Hasn't happened in a while, but it has happened, and I just wave the blasted fob around while grumbling, and the car stops being persnickety and I am allowed to proceed. Nowadays what happens a lot is my UMC charger plug's button doesn't pop open the charger port...

    Rated range on your car

    Firmware 5.9

Given that Google bought Waze, and that Waze-originated data (crowdsourced traffic reports like accidents, delays, etc) now show up in Google Maps on the web, what I have been hoping for is that Waze-originated data would start showing up directly in Tesla's own Google Maps-powered Nav app. Was...

Is this by default or optional? It's a privacy issue if by default the Tesla browser blabs the car's location to whatever website it happens to be on at the moment, without user permission.

Luggage in Frunk or Trunk -- any difference in range?

On a related note, i've been wondering about handling/range impacts due to putting a ready-to-mount spare 19" tire (already mounted on a wheel) in the frunk area, for peace of mind if nothing else, on long trips where Rangers are as rare as Strider.

No gas makes driving a lot "easy" -- are you concerned about mileage?

I was showing my car to a Tesla factory manager the other day while I was charging at Fremont, and he remarked in passing, "Your car will last for a million miles." But I try to keep the mileage to 12k or less, annually.

Unusual energy graph after I left my car at Discount Tire overnight

Easier way if you have a smartphone with a camera -- snap a quick shot of odometer when you drop off car. Then snap one when you get the car back. I do this all the time, also with rentals.
