MCU fails for the second time

They said it was replaced the first time back in 2013.

MCU fails for the second time

Very helpful, thanks for the insight. So, since I have the old MCU, can I replace the flash and let someone else use it? Is the flash replaceable without major surgery?

MCU fails for the second time

I think it's both. I assumed it was both. I'll see tomorrow.

MCU fails for the second time

I asked Tesla for the old MCU, and because I have to pay for the replacement, I'll get it. Any suggestions for a good use for it?

MCU fails for the second time

I escalated one level above the service center person I was dealing with, and asked, but they said it could not be covered under goodwill because it was out of warranty and my car is high mileage. I can see that, if it were something that would degrade with high mileage, but this is a CPU, and...

MCU fails for the second time

The MCU (the main 17" touch screen and computer unit) on my 2013 Model S has failed for the second time, this time out of warranty. The first time Tesla replaced it under warranty, but this time it's costing me more than $3,000 ($2726 plus tax) - about as much as the top of the line MacBook Pro...

    Suspension Problem on Model S

The reason I posted the entire relevant part of the text is so that people could come to their own conclusions. The release seemed like severe overkill to me. I've seen posts that say that BMW replaced or fixed something out of warranty without requiring such an onerous agreement be signed. My...

    Suspension Problem on Model S

For those who haven't seen the NDA language Tesla requires, here it an example, from an agreement they asked me to sign (but which I did not): (3) your receipt, agreement and acceptance of the above payment is in full and complete satisfaction of, and you agree (including, without limitation...

    Model X Launching Electric Boat

Our goal with the Pure Outboard was high performance. Boats are even more sensitive to weight than cars, so we set out to hit the best power density on the market. Our outboard, which weighs 91 lbs, does 20 kW continuous power, and of course, it is efficient at every power level from zero to its...

Anyone using 3 car seats (Diono RadianRXTs?)

I have the 7-seat version. The reasons it's harder: 1) leg-crushing mode, as described above. Every time you use the seat tilt function to get the 2nd row seats to slide forward tor 3rd row entry, they forget the front-back set position, and return to the default position of back 100%. If you...

    Model X Launching Electric Boat

Here's a video of the Model X launching a 16' fiberglass boat with my company's electric outboard motor prototype system on board: To appreciate this, you'll want the audio on.

Anyone using 3 car seats (Diono RadianRXTs?)

Leg crushing mode has been a killer. The only solution is to get the kids to put their legs up in the car seat while the 2nd row seats do their crushing maneuver, then adjust them forward, and then let the kids put their legs down again. I've got 2 kids in the 3rd row, and a 3rd kid in the 2nd...

Model X for Chelan Earth Day Fair

I'm considering it. I'd be coming up in my X with a boat trailered behind, powered by my company's 20 kW electric outboard motor. Would be nice to show the whole setup and then launch & boat on Chelan.

Small dent - found great body shop

I wanted to let the group know about a great body shop that cost 60% less than the body shop the Seattle SC to which we were referred, and did impeccable work. It's McCleod Auto Body in Kirkland. I strongly recommend them (and have no personal connection to them other than being a one-time...

Did you have a front license plate installed in WA?

For those like me who have not attached a front license plate, Seattle Police are out in force on 4th Ave S, issuing tickets for anything and everything, including not mounting your front plate. They just issued me such a ticket, despite having the plate and mounting hardware there to show them...

19" and 21" Tire Wear (informal) Survey

Another data point: At 26,000 miles, my 19" Goodyear tires were down to 0/32" rear and 3/32" front. Replacing all four. Were rotated at 12.5K miles.

    Canadian Superchargers

I asked a Tesla employee at the Olympia event yesterday (2/17) about the Vancouver supercharger, and he told me that the Squamish supercharger will go in first. He implied that it was soon.

    Supercharger - Ellensburg, WA

I charged there last night, and got up to 119kW, so this IS a 120kW station.

Fitting a tandem into a Model S: favor required from Eugene, OR area owner...

I regularly take my Bike Friday Model T Tikit (Large), but it's not a tandem. It fits, folded (a 15 second process), vertical, in the back, with the rear seats in their normal seating position, so I still have room for a Bob stroller and a couple of small pieces of luggage in the back. It does...

    Supercharged: West Coast Corridor announcement

I did not attend, but got these photos of the Tesla event at Grants Pass, OR, again from my friend Doug who lives there and who provided us with the photos of the site before it went live.

Superchargers in Northern California (location speculation)

That's great news! That was the key missing station on the way to the Bay Area. (Actually, coming back north is when it's the most critical.) Springfield is now the lone straggler, but an 85 can make it between Grants Pass and Woodburn both directions with conservative driving.

Superchargers in Northern California (location speculation)

I tried again on Sunday night, no dice. The hotel staff said the guys working on the station were still staying there. But I did get an only slightly better photo.

Supercharger - Springfield, OR - Kruse Way

Those are the same guys I saw. They said they were running wires from the charger stacks to the stalls, and installing a transformer.

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

You'll have to ask nleggatt for now. I only did it southbound, and the direction matters a lot because of the elevation differences. Southbound, I started at Woodburn with 255 rated miles, and arrived at Grants Pass with 9 rated miles, with a slight detour of about 4 miles at Springfield to see...

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

I did but it was so late and dark that the photos aren't very good. I just posted one to the California message board: NorCal Supercharger locations? - Page 6 - - - Updated - - - Here's Grants Pass, in use, presumably for the first time (other than Tesla testing it). FYI, the Black Bear...

Superchargers in Northern California (location speculation)

Here's Mt Shasta. Sorry for the horrible photo but it was the middle of the night. It looks finished but it's not yet connected. Also, you'll notice that the parking signs are on the wrong side of the charging stations - they assume that our charging ports are on the right, but they're on the left.

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

I will add it to PlugShare. FYI, left Seattle at 11:18am and arrived at the Corning, CA Supercharger at 2:50am, using only Supercharging. Charged at Centralia, Woodburn, Grants Pass, and Corning. Bay Area is an easy shot from here. So the Supercharger highway from Canada to Mexico is at least...

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

I stopped at Springfield. Finished but not turned on, as reported early today. There is also construction on the freeway that blocks its exit so it cost me a precious 4 miles extra of range to backtrack there and get back on the road South. Hotel staff didn't know when it would be connected.
  33. A

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

Now charging at Grants Pass. 88 kW. Made it from Woodburn on a full charge.

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

This crew at GP is from Tennessee but in OR they have to use a local electrical contractor per state law. They did not mention Ellensburg but I suspect another crew (ADK?) could be doing that one.
  35. A

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

The crew at Grants Pass said that was one of their next sites (Detroit Lake OR, Vacaville CA, and Yuma AZ). Detroit Lake is surprising but it comes from the crew that is about to do it.
  36. A

Superchargers in Northern California (location speculation)

That's right. They're going from Grants Pass to Vacaville, Detroit Lake OR, and Yuma AZ. Grants Pass had power connected today. The Vacaville location is at the back of a mall. (I have no more detail than that, but there is an outlet mall in Vacaville, which is Tesla's m.o.)
  37. A

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

Next OR supercharger will be at Detroit Lake, OR. (105 miles from Portland, along Highway 22)
  38. A

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

If they're testing with Tesla vehicles tomorrow, I can't imagine they would turn away a Tesla owner who came by for a charge, assuming they work properly. Of course, I could be wrong.

    Tesla Supercharger network

The crew building the Grants Pass, OR supercharger is going to be moving to Vacaville next. Grants Pass had power connected today, and will be open to the public Saturday or Monday, so Vacaville should break ground next week. I don't have a precise location, but I'm going to try to find out...
  40. A

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

Yes. Here you go, from today. Power was hooked up today. Tesla is bringing 4 cars tomorrow to test a full load. The same crew is going from GP to Vacaville, CA when they're done. They said it could be open to the public on Saturday or Monday.

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

My friend who took the photos of the GP construction site said it was obviously just 4 charging spots. The photos also show only 4 spots, and there are only 2 charger stacks. I agree that it's very odd.
  46. A

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

If you're up for an overnight at the Red Lion in Redding, in a week when Grants Pass is done you'll be able to get all the way to Folsom and the other CA superchargers without waiting around at any slow chargers.

    Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

Grants Pass photos from today: - - - Updated - - - It's located at the Black Bear Diner, and the soonest it may be ready for charging is one week from today, October 18th. There are 4 bays (for only 4 cars charging simultaneously).

    Supercharger - Burlington, WA

As MBCMDR pointed out, unlike at other Superchargers, chargers 1 & 5, 2 & 6, 3 & 7, and 4 & 8 are linked. Therefore it seems you want to avoid charging 4 spots away from another car that is also charging, unlike at other Supercharger locations where you want to avoid charging adjacent and in...

Look at the photo of the Hawthorne Supercharger Station on the Tesla Motors website.

With time-of-day pricing, if the cars are charged at night, then you can charge about twice as many as your calculations and still end up with a net bill of zero (rough numbers, from memory). Of course, some are charged during the day and some at night, so you'll end up somewhere between the two...
