    Decreasing rated range.

As many have pointed out here, I have to agree that balancing does not have to happen at 100%, but a post on the My Nissan Leaf forum helped me think differently about battery balancing. This is the brainstorm (so not perfect by any means): I'm starting to think that the BMS computer doesn't...

    Decreasing rated range.

After following this thread since the beginning, I have to agree with this statement. It seems to be the case with all the forums I follow (Leaf, I-Miev). The Model S, leaf and I-Miev all spend a lot of time balancing at 100%. In other words, once a car is at 100% it can stay there for over...

Autopilot HW is now STANDARD on all Model S series

During our test drive in Santa Fe last weekend the car was reading the speed limit sign and displaying them on the driver console. It may have had ACC but we didn't try it. The rep said all the sensors are there. Just needs software.

just upgraded to "D" - SOLD

You probably already know this. You don't need dual motors to get Autopilot. Any car you buy now has all the hardware for Autopilot. Hope that helps. J

There was no event per se, just test drives. One of the Tesla reps did mention Denver direction Superchargers by January, but nothing around Lamy or Santa Fe. I think Las Vegas, NM and ABQ Superchargers are going to be the closest ones. Update: Supercharger between Denver and Santa Fe will be...

I don't actually own a Tesla. I have ridden in TaoTho's Tesla, as well as a brown one in Santa Fe and yesterday in a white P85 during the Santa Fe test drive event. I was supposed to test drive (they scanned my license) but my friend was having so much fun on hwy 285 that I didn't have the...

If we are talking about the same station, I'm 90% sure that it was taken down when Positive Energy moved. However there is one near by at the SF train station. It is owned by the restaurant next door (under the solar panel) and is near lots of hotels in the plaza. The Plugshare app is your...

NYT article on the Geneva Motor Show and EVs

I would send your commentary to the author and editor of the article. It may do nothing or it may educated them. Either way all you need to do is cut, paste, and send. Its worth the 2 minutes to do it.

Why do Li-ion Batteries die? And how to improve the situation?

Your right! Thanks for clearing that up. SEI was always quite mysterious to me.

Why do Li-ion Batteries die? And how to improve the situation?

Whatever those additives are they would have to be inexpensive or making a billion of them would not make sense. I believe all useful electrolytes are cheap, so the additives are most likely the electrolyte recipe. In all lithium batteries there is only the anode, cathode, electrolytes, and the...

Why do Li-ion Batteries die? And how to improve the situation?

I think cathode formulation and the electrolyte combinations in the cell is the only thing we don't know. We know it is an 18650 form factor and we are pretty sure the cells are LiNiCoAlO2 and eventually someone will actually take apart the cell. Then we will know more.. Hope the...

Why do Li-ion Batteries die? And how to improve the situation?

Is the secret sauce in the Model S cells just the cathode formulation process and the electrolytes? Or is there more? Not to mention much less expensive. LCO being 60% cobalt and NCA only using 9% cobalt.

Why do Li-ion Batteries die? And how to improve the situation?

@djp Except those consumer care tips apply to all lithium battery chemistry. My question is much more specific and I am not that interested in consumer care. I don't need a car battery to last 30 years. I am interested in the scientific variations/differences - if any - between cobalt based...

Why do Li-ion Batteries die? And how to improve the situation?

Wow! That is awesome. Thank you! I hope there is a chance to ask another question because I have one more: Sorry for so many question but the above is the holy grail of all questions for me. Again thank you so much. This is very helpful in navigating this strange lithium battery world. I...

    Panama run

Also know as the Darién Gap. Might be impossible to build a road there mainly because road crews would be killed by whatever flavor of militant happens to control the area. I believe there are car ferries from Panama to Columbia. However, the status of these boats changes monthly. Using a...

Why do Li-ion Batteries die? And how to improve the situation?

Just to clarify. Elon has mentioned (don't remember where) that Model S batteries don't use very much cobalt (expensive?), which leads me to believe that the Model S is using NCA (LiNiCoAlO2) cells (9% cobalt) vs LiCoO2 cells (60%) found in the Roadster. Or maybe LiCoAIO2 without the nickel...

Why do Li-ion Batteries die? And how to improve the situation?

Electrolyte composition may be different in the "A" and "B" packs of the Model S Posted this on the original thread djp is referring to. Thought the significance to Model S owners is high. So here it is:

What does the battery degradation curve look like?

Electrolyte composition may be different in the "A" and "B" packs of the Model S Amazing! This explains why model S owners are seeing minimal degradation in their batteries (assuming their packs are balanced). This research group tested Tesla's battery chemistry with different electrolytes and...

    Decreasing rated range.

It seems like folks that don't baby their battery (eg. are forced to charge to frequently to 100% and get to zero or close to it) appear to have better range. I think batteries that are babied have unbalanced packs and so much of the range is hidden but not lost. It would be interesting to see...

    Mitsubishi Motors i MiEV

On Mitsubishi's website click "upcoming vehicles" at the bottom of the vehicles tabs for more info. Its probably at least 2-3 weeks before you can buy a 2014 with the new price cut, maybe longer. I know they have been having trouble ramping up battery production which delayed the launch of...

Model S Battery Pack - Cost Per kWh Estimate

@CapitalistOppressor. This video might help confirm your cost estimates. Elon reluctantly lets slip the approximate battery cost at 30-35% of the cost of the car, which I think is in the ball park of your estimate. Hope this helps.

Attn Future Model S owners in Texas! PLEASE READ!

I thought Texas was this pro-business, anti-socialist, tax-free, freedom loving, government get out of your way kind of place. At least that is the impression I get when the media talks about what Texas is all about or how Texas would like to see the rest of the country be like...

    Supercharger - Farmington, NM

@Cottonwood - Would be fun to meet up in Taos. PM me if you get wild hair to come down. Word of warning about the Ski Valley. Almost all steep vertical skiing. With a vertical drop of 3,244 feet is double the vertical drop of Wolf Creek. I'm sure your an experienced Skier, but you never...

Tesla Model S P85+ takes on the Ike Gauntlet Review

I have some thoughts on the next addition to the 4 corners charging network. Hope this input is helpful I agree the the Taos Cow is a great place to hangout. I love Arroyo Seco in general. I would however recommend a different spot for a Taos area 80amp charger. The Mesa Brewing Company or...

Tesla Model S P85+ takes on the Ike Gauntlet Review

I gotta say. I don't believe the "lease it" guy really thinks that the model S has a lease it rating. I think that when he test drives MBs and Audi's he can distance himself enough from the experience, to where its "ok" that he can't afford it. But when he drives the model S he has such a...

    Arizona Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

    Misleading Marketing

120KW Supercharging no longer an issue. I just posted a thread with evidence of 120KW charging.
  32. M

    Finally 120KW Supercharging!

I notice on this video review at around 5:54 that they are supercharging at 114KW in Columbus, TX. Is this because of new firmware? I like how Tesla is just sneaking in the new charging speed. Any ideas? Update: The 6:54 was wrong. 5:54 is correct. Dyslexic moment. Too many fives.

My wife is beating me over the head with Ozzie Zehner

Thanks for the clarification on which part of energy sources are external. Its what makes these discussions is fun and its good to be accurate. I think rather than focusing on the electricity that refineries use which is a relativity small amount, we should be focusing on the massive amount of...

My wife is beating me over the head with Ozzie Zehner

The "long tail pipe" idea always seems to forget that it take the equivalent of 7 kWh of energy to produce one gallon of gas at the refinery. 7 kWh will run a Model S for 25 miles. This is before a single drop of gas is burnt and before you can even compare the use of either. So minus 7 KWh...

Rear negative camber affecting Model S range? Please weigh in!

I know lolachampcar has detailed how rear negative camber in the Model S affects tire wear (amazing job documenting this BTW). I however would like to have a discussion on how it affects range. If you were able to change the camber to +0.5 instead of -1.5 how much range would you gain? I...

MODEL S: What's the truth about the carbon footprint?

Thanks for the clarification. I think in other parts of the country they use coal to produce electricity for refining. Its good to be on top of the details but the general truth is whats important and the end result is the same. I am just so tired of the long tail pipe argument and think in...

MODEL S: What's the truth about the carbon footprint?

This argument always seems to miss the most important fact. It takes 7 kWh of electricity to produce a gallon of gasoline. And because refineries use wholesale electricity, they are using 100% coal to make that gasoline. You can go 20-25 miles on 7 kWh in a small electric car, so 25 miles...

    Supporting Plug In America

+1 Tesla owners have more fun when there is a positive view towards EVs in general. If things go south in the next two years, EVs owners might be frowned upon (including Telsa owners). Positive attention and acceptance for EVs breeds rock-stardom for Tesla owners. Its important...
