I have the gen 3 handle in a 2014 model s with the same issue as the OP. Any ideas why it would happen for that particular handle?

I looked at that earlier but there wasn't the D version of the part. Apparently E is the newest version of the same part and is compatible with my S. 82 dollars shipped and a seemingly easy install.
