This only proves my point of DC direct drive not being effective. He has 288V LiPo pack, but only gets 30 miles range. AH size is not listed, but with 900 cells I am guessing about 150-200AH in 10P-90S configuration. Range is sacrificed for torque and speed, both of which SUCK AMPS. You can't have everyting with DC direct drive because of limited RPM range, so something has to be sacrificed.

EVnut, my statement was specific to Daniel's case. I wasn't talking about AC drivetrains, since obviously on a Tesla forum everyone is aware of such possibility

Most direct drives seem to be ground up builds, or major reworks of a kit car, etc. Daniel's case is a typical street car with swapped motor, so its not effective to lock it in 3rd gear as was suggested by some people. It can be done with a huge controller, but range will be shot to death.

Yeah, I got sort of confused in the timing of some of the responses. Seemed like the forum went wonky on me there for a bit.

True but it is a race car and he does state the pack was damaged during tab welding and has reduced capacity. I'm pretty sure he has a new pack now anyway, don't know the range figures.

Daniel posted, in the sister thread at Priuschat, that he is replacing his current controller with a 2kW water cooled Zilla, perhaps next month.

I just looked at his A123 pack and it looks like he is using 1440 cells in 90S16P configuration. That's 297 V nominal, 1104 A continuous, 2208 A peak, 10.93 KWh capacity at 100% DOD. 30 miles of claimed range comes out to 364 Wh/mi. That pack weighs only about 250 lbs. Looks like his range is only limited by low storage capacity.

I don't know his current pack configuration but this is the latest from his Twitter:

Daniel, congrats on the Z2K!

I had a long conversation with Paul about my concerns regarding the Porsche. I've been posting about the car here and also on the DIY Electric Car board. I've noticed that many of the same folks are active on both chat boards, and since this board is more directed to the Tesla, and that one more toward conversion cars, I posted details about my conversation with Paul there. Rather than post the same stuff in both places, unless folks object to moving the conversation over there, I'll just post a link to that thread:

Newbie Needs a Better Controller. My report on my conversation with Paul is post number 36 on that thread.

It seems easier to have the conversation in one place, but if there are folks here who really do not want to go over there, I will copy my post here.

Daniel

So what did paul say about the motor that was in the car? Still not sold? You might find the motor setting on your missing untray.
