Questions on Spoiler / Rear Visibility / Rear Seats

Hi all,

I have received the It's Time to Build email yesterday, but still haven't made up my mind. I was wondering if other TMC members wouldn't mind shed some light on my questions below.

Spoiler:
These came up while reading on ecomodding.com. I did a quick search but wasn't able to find relevant info on this. I know it can be used to help lift the trunk lid or stop items from sliding off :) but my questions are:

1) Is it removable (without causing damage)?

2) How much of an impact on fuel economy can be expected at highway speeds, if any?

Rear Visibility
1) I can't even remember if I checked the rear view mirror at all during the short test drive. I've read some find the view tiny, plus the fact that some reported that adjustments for side mirrors are somewhat limited. Can this combo not potentially create hazards?

2) Do the backup camera have additional adjustments available other than on/off? (such as focus, direction, night vision, etc.)

3) Would it be correct to assume that with 3 average-sized adults sitting in the back, one can no longer see what's behind the car?

Rear Seats
1) IIRC the stock rear seat headrest cannot be adjusted, how does its height feel for the passengers? (does it properly protect their neck, etc.?)

2) Any suggestions or add-on items for passengers who find the headrest uncomfortable?

3) What is the (approximate) vertical distance from the surface at the edge of the seat to the floor? Some have reported that the seats are too low.

4) Can grab bars/handles be installed (aftermarket)? They do help with entering and exiting the vehicle, reduce body lean when making tight turns, and some people sometimes just want to grab onto something :)

Thank you.

Yes.

It might actually improve airflow.

The test wasn't long enough to determine this. It's thought that the adjustability is perceived (by me) as low because the rear end flares out.

2) Do the backup camera have additional adjustments available other than on/off? (such as focus, direction, night vision, etc.)

It's never been mentioned.

3) Would it be correct to assume that with 3 average-sized adults sitting in the back, one can no longer see what's behind the car?

That's pretty much a given with any car. The rear camera should provide better visibility than any mirror anyway.

Rear Seats

Adjustable headrests are often incorrectly adjusted. I'd say this is a wash.

2) Any suggestions or add-on items for passengers who find the headrest uncomfortable?

There are many aftermarket ones and if for some reason they don't work in the Model S, I'm sure a forum member will create something.

3) What is the (approximate) vertical distance from the surface at the edge of the seat to the floor? Some have reported that the seats are too low.

I sat in the back in the stationary car, and it felt pretty normal. I'm not all that tall though (175 cm).

4) Can grab bars/handles be installed (aftermarket)? They do help with entering and exiting the vehicle, reduce body lean when making tight turns, and some people sometimes just want to grab onto something :)

Unknown, I'd think it would be hard to do given where the side curtain airbags reside.

I was actually told by a Tesla specialist that the spoiler is roughly a 2% range reduction. While that seems significant, at 300 miles range this is only 6 miles, and at 200 is only 4 miles, to put it in perspective (depending on whether you are driving 55 or 80 mph on the highway).

That's one way to look at it. Another is, how much are we paying to get those extra 6 miles? Incremental kWh above 60kWh cost $400/kWh. At about 3 miles/kWh (333 Wh/mile), that means we are spending $800 to get an incremental 6 miles of range. That's an expensive spoiler!

Regarding the view outnof the back window - i definitely felt in my test drive that it was limited. It felt narrow and somewhat distorted when looking through the rear view mirror. That said, it didnt bother me much during the drive. Between that and the side view mirrors i was able to see well enough during the drive that i wasnt uncomfortable seeing around me when changing lanes, etc. Its probably also something you get used to over time.

I was debating whether I really wanted the spoiler on my MSP and while at the DC event I asked the Tesla Product Mgr. if I could just have them put it in the trunk in case I wanted to install it later.
His recommendation was to let them install it at the factory and then just take it off later if I decided I don't want it. He said it's just held on with tape and can be taken off easily without damaging the paint.

I was told the exact same thing so decided as well to let them install the spoiler even thought I wasn't sure how good it would look.

Strange... I thought the purpose of a spoiler was to either reduce drag or create downward force (maybe both), but Model S is not designed to travel at speeds where lift is usually a concern. Even though the impact is small, what is the point of having it on Model S?

Mostly for looks I'd imagine. It was something they could add to the performance package to make it look different.

I think it's a check-list marketing item. Seems as if all sedans are sporting some kind of spoiler (just like they all seem to have that funny chrome strip in the middle of the back). Mostly they just block vision from the rear window.
