I have a Valentine One

0702_ec_03_z+radar_detector_comparison+valentine_one.jpeg

Radar detector, which can be installed with a direct power connection. Any ideas on what if any power source can be tapped?? I know that anything now is conjecture, but maybe you roadster geniuses can chime in on a viable location. Currently mine run on a line to a 12V power port located underneath the glovebox in the passenger footwell, tapped into the wire feeding the power port. Uses standard RJ-11 phone cord to transmit power to the detector which attaches to windshield with a suction cup mount (see picture).

Are you trying to give or sell that to me? I think I will be needing one of those soon

It beeps like a loon, at least when you're anywhere that's built up. It's kind of a radar detector for nerds (or geeks, which one is the less derogatory term??) I like it, my wife hates it, she much prefers her Escort 9500ix. Plus that provides red lgiht camera alerts, which is something that has paid for itself already!

It also has an app called Escort Live. It's kind of like Facebook for speeders!

Z, I wouldn't part with it for anything! Has more than paid for itself, and I've had it for about 8 years. I'm hoping I can find a new home for it in the S.

Ya, I didn't think so...I'm going to try and pick me up one of those myself.

My wife got a ticket last weekend driving back north (73 in a 55). I/she needed it then. I warned her  4th of July weekend Sunday - extra CHP, don't haul ass around the blind corners !

With the Model S we could have made a run for it

I haven't looked at Model S up close but in past cars I've tapped into the rearview mirror power. Though now that they've raised the speed limits to 70 and 10-over is pretty safe I haven't used my radar detector in ages. Only break it out when towing since that's still 55 here in Cali.

Yes, on the interstate, you are pretty safe, but on some quick roads within the city (speed limits of 50 and 55 mph), city traffic officers are more stringent and far more difficult to spot. Less likely to get that 10 mph buffer.

I used to usa a V1 too it paid for itself the first 5 years, when the police started to use Lidar it became near useless. I think on my V1 there was a laser indicator...whenever I saw that pop up I knew I was screwed.

The front dome light is a good place to get power. Unless it is triggered off a CAN signal (which is very possible since almost everything in the Model S is controlled by microprocessors)

Forgot about that - Adaptive Cruise Control on other cars would trigger the laser detection all the time. My model is several years old so maybe they've refined the detection but it was bordering on useless on the interstate.

And the reason you have to drive faster than the speed limit is?...
It's not like you will get there any faster because all that will happen is you'll get behind a slow car or have to stop at a stop light.
In addition, it's far more nerve-wracking worrying about speeding tickets or when you'll get going again.

Speeding on the interstate is worth it. Speeding on surface streets is only good if the lights are timed badly and you have to do so to make the light. I very rarely go more than 5 over on surface streets. I regularly go 15+ over on the interstate.

In an electric car (especially a Tesla) it is easy to go faster than you think you are going.

To bring things back to the Model S and its fuse box location .. or existence. Can someone on the Amped tour ask about this?

Normally in ICE cars the fuse box is located behind a door in the side of the dash that can be accessed only when the front driver side door is open.

Thanks,
