Tesla probably wanted to push the Texas test drives as far back they could due to the insane heat in that part of the world (during summer). Texas test drivers will really be able to test the A/C on the Model S.
Now if only they would add a few stops in Canada...
Montreal and Vancouver would be awesome!

Doesn't this have everything to do with Texas laws requiring a dealership middleman between the manufacturer and the consumer?

July vs August in Texas not too much different. Really hot vs. really really hot but glad they're coming to Texas. Big market to leave out and they have a store here.
They also have a new blog post saying there are some minor changes to the production version including that tiny shelf below the screen as standard.
