The announcement followed a meeting in Munich, where Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota Motor Corporation, and Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the board of management of BMW AG, signed a memorandum of understanding outlining four areas of collaboration. These include joint development of a fuel-cell system, joint development of architecture and components for a future sports vehicle, collaboration on powertrain electrification and joint research and development on lightweight technologies.

If Tesla and Toyota are in negotiations right now, this move could be designed to pressure Tesla.

I'm not aware of BMW having any fuel cell tech, so it could be a trade between Toyota's fuel cell tech and BMW's need for hybrid tech. Tesla's pure EV play being a different tech. BMW does have a pure EV tech, maybe Toyota is looking to get that info. BMW also has the sports car niche.

Overall it doesn't look like good news for Tesla, but could be a non-issue too.
