As many of you may know, the government is funding a number of areas to create a public charging infrastructure. These areas are called Plugged in Places. They are run by various organisations set up for the purpose and overseen by a government office called OLEV - Office of Low Emission Vehicles. We as EV drivers seem not to be represented either at OLEV or with the Plugged in Places organisations, neither do we seem to have any representation with any of the car manufacturers, charging station manufacturers or installers or any other official organisation related to EV ownership or take up.

This is a rather wierd situation. These organisations are creating what they believe to be what we, the EV drivers, want and need without consulting us!

A group of electric car drivers want to create an organisation of our own to properly represent the wants and needs of EV drivers in the UK. This can only be achieved by us, the EV drivers ourselves as we are the only ones that truly know what matters and what doesn't. There is an organisation in the USA called http://www.pluginamerica.org that represents EV drivers in the USA. We are looking at possibly creating a similar organisation here in the UK. An organisation that can be the face of EV drivers to other groups and businesses. An organisation that as EV drivers we can coalesce around to ensure our needs are considered.

If this is something you might be interested in being a part of, either as a member or by being part of the organisation itself then please follow the hash tag #PIUK on twitter.

If you don't have a twitter account then even if this is the only reason for you to have one then it is free and easy so you could always set up an account, follow #PIUK and either join in or not. We are setting up an online meeting, hopefully with the people that run pluginamerica.org and also some of the key EV advocates here in the UK. If you want to take part in that meeting post here and I will try to keep people informed but if you can follow the tag #PIUK then you will then have all the latest info for yourself.

This is a very exciting development for us EV drivers in the UK. I urge all EV drivers in the UK, regardless of what you drive, to get behind these efforts and support the creation of such an organisation and when it is formed to actually join it. If we want to have our wishes and needs represented then we need to show we actually care and that is best done by showing your support.

Meeting is Monday 2nd July at 7pm BST

Please take a look at http://plugin-uk.org/ for more info.

This first meeting is really to guage the need for the organisation and to assess support amongst the EV online community. All welcome.

Please attend if you support the idea of a group that can represent EV drivers needs and wants to the industry and government.

The transcript of the meeting will be published after for those that cannot attend.
