yeah - we're all really just guessing at this point, but it's fun, and it helps pass the time

So assuming nobody drops out, the #4000 number is right over the 5000 for the year edge, so they would probably be in January (again, assuming Tesla hits their targets). Of course, there's no way to count how many holes in the list there are. Upgrade to sigs (assuming the prior sig didn't jump in front of the P line), cancels, and one other that i'm not sure you are counting - how many people are going to be pushed back because they want either the 40kwh battery, no air suspension, red color? Or how many are going to defer because they need to see some of the details finalized, or need a test drive? I'm guessing the amount that frequent this forum is pretty low, but remember there's hundreds or thousands of other res holders that aren't as rabid as this group. *grin*

Frankly, i think the more difficult part for tesla (as far as meeting their targets) is going to be actually DELIVERING that many cars this year. I know we've had some discussion of that topic, but the logistics of getting them delivered (and not just built) seems daunting.

And yes - i'm concerned for tax reasons as well. Would love to get that refund on my 2012 taxes.

I'm not particularly concerned with the delivery part as far as getting them from here to there. Tesla is a tiny slice of total cars shipped around the nation, there's plenty of carriers to get the job done. The hard part is the human touch behind each delivery, dropping the car at your house, explaining stuff, etc. That's a ton of hours for delivery experts (remember travel time to a lot of places where Tesla doesn't have a store close by).

I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla starts grouping the deliveries by region, when possible, to limit the amount of drive time and maximize the delivery specialists time.

I was just notified that my delivery has been delayed to October. Although obviously not the best news, I appreciate that Tesla let me know well in advance, and I told them I know that they did this to try to ensure I get the highest quality vehicle. Assuming I don't get the car October 1st (I estimated Oct. 15th in my signature below, but it could be as late as Halloween), this makes the ramp up even more steep for November/December.

Interesting, I was told a solid "October" for mine - #698. That must mean they plan to ramp up pretty quickly that month; I would imagine yours will be more towards the beginning of the month if mine is due in October as well.

If I remember well Tesla has recently been talking about 5000 cars being built in 2012, not being delivered in 2012. A crucial difference.

But I do not understand why there is so much fuss about them hitting the 5000-mark or not. Missing that target by a few weeks to me is not a big deal. I would be much more disappointed if they rushed things just because they promised 5000 this year, and quality suffers as a result. And it's not like there's delay after delay after delay, like Fisker has done for 2 years. Tesla is still on target and if they would miss that by a few weeks I would still consider it a bull's eye given the enormous complexity of this operation.

Most recently in the Q2 shareholder letter they said "delivered".

As a buyer of the car I agree with you; as a buyer of TSLA stock that's a whole different discussion.

Admittedly, the number delivered in Q4 is important, but really the most important thing at the end of the year is knowing that they are on track to deliver 20,000 or more in 2013. So if the steep part of the production S-curve is behind us by the end of December, I don't think it matters that much if they book those sales in Q4 or Q1 of 2013.

When we're you told that? I hope very recently, because this seemed like they let me knew as soon as they knew definitely they weren't going to get it done by September.
