Does anyone know when did the "boot box" (aka roadster trunk) change from being exposed CF (in the interior of the trunk) to having that painted-on faux-velvet "flocking"?

Not sure the exact number but it was around car 700 or so. It was just the flocking that was added. The trunk chaged from being CF to being less expensive plastic.

So flocked trunks are plastic instead of CF?
All the 1.5s (up to #500) are non flocked CF.
The world loves to be deceived.
Yes, all flocked trunks are plastic. They made the change over around car 700 as a cost savings measure. I have a 2.0 (#516) and it is a CF trunk.
