Gah! I thought I had read the whole thread. For some reason the " View First Unread " function is not working for me on this thread.

No, the Volt issues were due to leaking coolant after physical pack damage causing a short circuit. Nothing at all to do with cells just sitting in a fully functioning pack.

Even with a bricked battery all the structure, electronics, wiring, cooling loops, etc. should still be perfectly functional and have value. Only the cells would be damaged.

I'm not sure where that came from since people have not reported that behavior in actual use. Or at least I don't remember seeing it, and it doesn't make much sense. In "storage" mode the pack may be allowed to drop quickly to keep the electrolyte more stable, but the pack is plugged in so it won't go too low.

You said (paraphrasing) "when not in use, the cells do not need protection from catastrophic failure". I believe they do, and the Volt proved that. The "fix" applied to the Volts was (a) structure re-enforcement, and (b) more sensors to detect the fault.

The Roadster battery pack is the most coddled and conditioned pack of any EV - whether the cells are 'in use' or not. Tesla chose to do it that way to extend the life and safety of the pack, but the trade off is it takes electricity to manage the pack, and when not plugged in that mean a 'vampire' drain on the pack.

markwj: And still, if the car has been standing still for x weeks and the battery has a low SoC, I think it would be wise to turn everything off before it dies. Unless someone happens to crash into the car so hard as to puncture the battery pack this will be the better option.

Niether of which would prevent a short circuited cell from discharging. You can't equate a physically damaged pack with intact cells sitting in an intact vehicle.

Which can result in a dead pack, the opposite of coddled.
