Probably a safe assumption that the "B" in the 12 digit is for Beta. Anyone get any Alpha VINs?

Good work, Doug. Didn't know anybody had snagged any Model S VINs yet. Collecting them might prove to be prohibitive if it's built in the volumes they are aiming for! But cool to see nonetheless.

I haven't seen any info on the Model S on the NHTSA site yet, but I imagine you're on the right track. 11th plant digit of 1 apparently represents the NUMMI plant (I guess we can stop calling it that now, can't we?). Restraint system will be some representation of however many airbags they put in, motor type is anyone's guess, unless someone has any insider tech info on it.

Interesting to see the Beta as a MY2012; I snapped a MY2010 VIN on a prototype Volt back at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. Regular production Model S units are going to be MY2013, correct?

By this I would logically assume the 4th digit of Model X VINs to be X. ; )

Well we don't need (or want to) collect them all. Just enough to be able to decipher what each digit means. Would also be cool to see how Tesla handles the prototype VINs. Back when we saw the Alphas, they were referred to by VIN, but only the last 3 digits or so. I think the Model S they showed at the March 2009 unveiling was a converted Mercedes CLS with a Roadster drivetrain. So it would be interesting to see what VIN it has.

FWIW, that's the same car that's now in Boston and is heading to DC next week.

    5YJ S B 1 A 2 8 C 1 B00023
    5YJ S B 1 A 2 4 C 2 B00014

Both are consistent with the exception of manufacturing plant. Perhaps 2=SpaceX, 1=Tesla Plant ?
