Thread: Model X Falcon Doors

    Yes!

The Model X itself is 16' 8" long. If you don't have at least 18" of clearance then you won't be able to walk around the car and couldn't realistically fit it in your garage anyway.

If you give it 9" clearance in the front and 18" in the back then that would necessitate a garage that is at least 19' deep - if you've got that you're golden - if you don't then the car is too big even without the Falcon Doors.

My garage is 20' deep but I cannot open the rear lift gate on my wife's minivan because it hinges from the edge of the van and swings wide up into the air.

The Model X rear hatch hinges at the edge of the roof and the lip on the back only requires about 6" of clearance in the rear in order to open. Of course you need 18" just to stand back there.

I understand that the falcon doors are motorized and the car can stop them at an arbitrary point. I suggest the car uses its GPS coordinates to learn all places where it ever opened its falcon doors to remember the maximum height. Just like the Roadster learns its maximum amperage to charge.

Well, how did it learn the first time? By banging the doors into the roof? I say some kind of sensor on the door edge, probably the cheapest would be ultrasonic.

Try this.....Assuming the Tesla webpage is to scale (and they would be pretty stupid if it isn't!) they show a Model S and a Model X side by side and we know they have stated that the Model S will be 56.5" high. Just some simple measuring and multiplying suggests that the Model X will have a maximum open doors height of 84.75":

The arrows and inches are my additions to this pic!

The lowest point in my garage (where the opener mechanism is installed) is 88", plus each bay is 23'. I'm ready for delivery.

You better come up with a crushable cardboard box!

The box is only necessary to even out the impact on the soft top of a cat leaping down from the rafters above - they won't be able to do that to the X.

The good news is that the X is large enough for 2 cat carriers and a trip to Malibu.

According to Vger in this thread: Reactions to the Model X Franz told him that 7' is needed for proper clearence, which actually agrees with Nigel's measurements.

So most people will not have a problem. They had to have tested this. and they can alway sacrifice a little bit of standing room to reduce the clearance an inch or two if need be.

I wonder if that means only that, with 7', you can get the doors open far enough for plausible entry and exit. As NigelM has posted elsewhere, it appears that the full vertical opening is higher.
