Design News - News - Drag Racing Goes Electric

Wayland says his Zombie can go 100 miles on a charge. "We have the same range as a Nissan Leaf, but we have acceleration that's better than the Bugatti Veyron," he said, referring to the vehicle known as the fastest road-legal car in the world.

    Wow!

"When we first published our story on electric-vehicle drag racing in 2009, the excitement in that tight little world was growing. In the intervening two years, John "Plasma Boy" Wayland and his White Zombie Datsun have cracked the 11-second quarter-mile plateau, with a record time of 10.258 seconds and a speed of 123.79mph. "

10.258 didn't crack the 11 second mark, it kicked the crap outta it!

Can't decide if I like this, or if it's just plain wrong.

The world loves to be deceived.

I like it. This is exactly the kind of thing that can show the average person that electric vehicles don't have to be boring or slow.

The car in the picture could use a few more batteries though.

I'm building one for my girlfriend. 675 HP Dennis Berube motor, 1.1MW FlightPower battery pack, 1.5MW Evnetics Shiva controller. The roller is rated to 8.5 seconds. There's a chance we can get into the 8s because we're using a Chevette and trying to keep it under 2200 lbs. Battery pack arrives in 2 weeks, and that's the last major component.

Check the National Electric Drag Racing Association website for the latest records. Door-slammers are already in the 9s.
