Does anyone know what vin number they started the 2.25 and the 2.5 at?

The 1.5->2.0 was a "clean break" based on the VIN VFX mentioned.

2.25 and 2.5 are a little more "squishy", not necessarily on an exact VIN.
For instance, I think they started the 2.25 by doing some of the 2.5 mods to some old demo cars. So there can be some lower numbered 2.0 VINs which have some of the 2.5 stuff in them. I think they let people bring in their 2.0s and pay to have the updates done as well.

...introduced our first vehicle, the Tesla Roadster, in early 2008. In July 2009, we introduced a new Roadster model, the Tesla Roadster 2, and its higher performance option package Roadster Sport, as well as launched the Tesla Roadster in Europe. On July 1, 2010, we introduced the Roadster 2.5, with new styling and an upgraded interior. ...

Is This The First Used 2.5 For Sale?
I think 2.5 was announced around July 2010 and VINs were past 900.
At the January, 2010 Detroit auto show they exhibited "VIN #1000" which has a 2.0 front end:
Tesla Roadster No. 1,000 Hits Detroit Auto Show, Will Be Sold for Charity
...DETROIT — A Millennial White Tesla Roadster Sport bearing VIN no. 1,000 is on display at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show...
I wonder though if they did some unusual VIN allocation to get VIN#1000 on car #1000? That car might be the highest VIN #'ed 2.0, and it may have been assigned a VIN that was about 6 months ahead of schedule.

Doug_G said his VIN#919, delivered well after #1000, is a "late 2.0". He also said "the day my car arrived they announced the 2.5".
So the 2.5 transition seemed to happen in the high 900s and/or low 1000s. Does anyone have a NorthAmerican 2.5 with VIN 09XX ?

You can't tell the 2.25's from 2.0's using the VIN. A 2.25 is, as I understand it, a 2.0 that has been upgraded with 2.5 front and rear body panels.
That is certainly true, but can you even tell a 2.5 from a 2.0 by VIN? I see a huge gap between 5YJRE1A34A1000848 and 5YJRE1A12A1001060, so I don't have any information on when the 2.5 model started for certain. I suppose it mainly depends upon when Tesla Motors changed the parts on the assembly line - would they wait for a particular VIN before switching or just execute the change as soon as they made the decision?

Whatever it is, it is fairly close to < 1001 = (2.0 or 2.25), & 1001+ = 2.5, but I am not positive if it is that accurate.
For instance, I don't think I have seen VIN 099x, or 100x, (other than VIN#1000 which is a "special" 2.0)

...Roadster (#1014) - *my* Roadster - arrived. Turns out it was one of the first 2.5’s off the assembly line. I’d ordered a 2.0, and they announced the 2.5’s a couple of weeks later. Much to my amazement, in response to my inquiry on supposed improvements in the power management system in the 2.5 (improving performance in “high temperature operating environments”), my Service Rep informed me that my order was being "upgraded"!...

A 2.25 is just a 2.0 that was upgraded to (mostly) 2.5 specs. The most obvious sign would be the newer front and rear bumpers. A more thorough conversion would include changing the single DIN dash to double DIN. (Although there are a small number of actual 2.5s with single DIN, the double DIN is somewhat of a defining characteristic of the 2.5s.)

My #861 is a 2.5 Sport.
It looks like a 2.0 sport to me. The transition from 2.0 to 2.5 started around VIN #964

You seem to have 1.5/2.0 style front/rear bumpers not the 2.5 versions.

Whoah, where did you find those pics! #861 was painted matte gray prior to my ownership, and I've always wondered what it looked like in its original color... Great find!!!

The person I bought it from said it was a 2.5, and that the bumper was a replacement from a 1.5, but according to your photos there, he was wrong. It sure looks like the car came with the original style bumper, which makes sense, considering the VIN.

Mine does have a double din, but I'm guessing that was added after the fact.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Even though I'm not super stoked that I bought a 2.0 thinking it was a 2.5, but at least I have those original photos now ;-)

I thought the matte gray was a wrap...

(I collect Roadster photos... In hindsight, I should have bought a Roadster or some TSLA stock! )
