How long after delivery do people receive the paperwork necessary to register their model s? My temp tags expire in just over a week and I don't have my paperwork yet. DS says it could be another week. That leaves me very little time to actually register the car.

They will send you another temp tag good for 30 days after the first one expires. It took almost 2 months for me to get my permanent tags. Absolutely pathetic. First time in 15 years I've taken a new luxury car of the lot without the permanent plates already on them.

My 30-day temp tag expired and I drove around for two more weeks on them before my permanent tag came in. I went into the store and they told me to not worry about it. Keep my temp registration and my purchase paperwork in the car and I'll be fine if I get stopped. I didn't get stopped though.

FWIW: I appreciate different States have different registration procedures, and what we go through here in California with our DMV is a lot different than what the OP and others seem to have to go through where they live, but FWIW, I got my physical plates here in well less than a month -- faster than I've ever had any other new car purchase happen before, perhaps in my life. Whatever Tesla and my Delivery Specialist did was stellar, compared to my former multiple Lexus, MBZ and BMW purchases I've also made here in CA.

Yes, this is very strange to me as well. I've bought numerous new cars in my life and never had to wait more than 1 month for the plates....I'm on 2 months now and still haven't received anything from the dmv. Tesla says I'll have to go and get another temp tag myself at the dmv. Doesn't seem like I can catch a break when it comes to my tesla...

@RedSoxFan18, so it took about 10 days from Model S delivery before Tesla Motors FedExed you the package including paperwork so you could register and pay taxes in your home state? I'll be accepting delivery of my Model S at Villa Park, IL this coming Wed... but it will be registered to me in Iowa... similar to the process you must have gone through up east. My vanity tags are already available for pickup when I register the car; I had pre-ordered them.

I have a unique situation. My Great Grandpa was an early automobile owner here in CT and his original 2 digit one letter letter (not a vanity plate) and one number license plates have been in the family and on a car since 1904. That plate (in modern form) is on the car we will be trading in. I would like those plates transferred to the the new Model S. Do you think this is doable by Tesla? I will have to query my DS once we begin contact.

Your thoughts?

I didn't end up trading to Tesla here in CA, but was told by my DS if I traded-in, my vanity plates could have been transferred. Since DMVs have unique rules by State, its probably worth your checking specifically in CT. Good luck.

Not sure tesla will do anything here, take off your plates when you trade and hold until you go to the dmv to register the tesla. Then just transfer the plates during that process and screw them on outside the dmv. This is what I did.

BertL and AMPUP thanks for the replies... I will do what I must to keep those plates... they were first assigned to a 1904 Locomobile which was made in nearby Bridgeport, CT. Who knows where that car is now? After the Locomobile, I was told my great grandfather became a Packard man, and stayed with that brand of car loyally.

Correct. I left delivery with no paperwork at all on 12/30. I took delivery in MA but the "dealer" was Tesla in NJ and the car came with NJ Non-Resident Temp Tags. Yesterday (1/9) a fedex package showed up containing the MVPA with a "Bill of Sale" stamped on it and a certificate of origin. Tesla essentially is not involved in the registration process at all. All they do is give you the paperwork you need register the car in your home state. For me the process is to take proof of insurance along with the paperwork the provided to town hall where they will collect the excise and property taxes. Town hall gives me those receipts and then I go to the Maine DMV to actually register the car and get plates. If I had plates I want to transfer I just bring them with me and the DMV can assign them to my model S.
