Special Signature are Signature reservation holders that have previously purchased Roadsters. The Specials get their cars first followed by the regular Signatures.

There are no R Signatures. The R series are General Production reservation holders that have previously purchased Roadsters.

Maybe Tesla is doing it like this: Ex. S1, SSL2, R3, R4, SSL5, etc...to 1,000 cars. S1278 is going to get S1000 accounting for people that deferred/cancelled
The total number of Special Signatures and Regular Signatures is 1,000. Yes, the last Signature will get the 1000th car.

The General Production starts with the R series then goes to the regular General Production series.

    I obviously disagree.

Actually, I don't think we do, but I worded it poorly
While I accept your definitions, for numbering purposes it makes no difference.
SSL20 and S20 don't both exist. They don't start over with S1 when all the SSLs have been delivered.
So if there are 250 Roadster owners that ordered Signatures, it will go SSL249 then SSL250, then S251.
You may as well say S249, S250, S251.
The question S36 or SSL36 is meaningless, they are the same car.

There are non SSL reservations numbers in the same range as the SSL numbers.

Correct. Fellow TMC forum member Laurent is "regular" Sig #2 and he confirmed that he's not SSL.

That was Founder #17. Not a Sig.

More precisely what that thread states is that Founders Seriers #17 is being prepared for delivery.

So that means that if there were (for example) 305 Special Signatures, it would be SSL1 - SSL305 and then S1 - S695, right?

Also, does anyone know how many Special Signatures there are total?

    Edit:

Larry, I see that under your name it says "Model S Perf Sig 1232". Does that mean you're signature 1232? I thought they didn't go that high.

JRodo, as per the first post (that michiganmodels keeps up to date) on this thread, we are at:

    US
    SSL 244 (January 4, 2012)
    S 1,278 (July 27, 2012)

These are unofficial of course. There have been deferrals (to General Production) or cancellations from SSL/S; at that time, when someone on the Sig wait list (such as Larry) was invited by Tesla to get a Sig, they were assigned a new Sig sequence number beyond 1,000 and that's at 1,278 now as far as we know. There are effectively atleast (278 + # of still-active SSLs) holes in the S sequence.

    But, bottomline, SSL + S = 1,000.

    Not to pick on JRodo802...

But after the Nth go round on this discussion, I really wish I had a place to start building the Model S FAQ so I could just link to it.

Perhaps I should just register a domain name and install some freeware wiki software so I can get started.
