Microgrids light up the night in Kenya villages - CSMonitor.com
“Light from roof systems can improve quality of life, but only microgrids can lift people out of poverty,” says Emily Moder, SteamaCo’s software manager. “They are the next step up. And by allowing people to build businesses and another source of income, they improve the resilience of rural communities against drought or climate change.”
The biggest power demand, he says, is at night, when lights, TVs, and sound systems come on. That is not a great match with solar energy production, which of course is in daylight hours. But, like most village hubs, Entasopia has battery storage sufficient for at least 24 hours of use.

Very interesting article... one speculation is that the 3rd world will 'leap frog' a centralized grid and jump directly into distributed generation like they've skipped land lines and went straight to cell phones.

It's kind of weird to think that there are more people without electricity today than there were when the first electric light bulb was turned on...

Unless we wise-up fast the 1st world could end up in the dark as the '3rd world' shines on... our centralized power grid is incredibly vulnerable...
