Waiting weeks for registration paperwork

I suspect requirements for paperwork, how they get processed, and ones expectations need to vary by State.

In California, my paperwork was completed in full at time of delivery, the dealer (Tesla) then has to send in the physical signed docs (CA DMV requires them), and then after likely several weeks (CA DMV is infamous for being understaffed and not the speediest), my registration and plates will arrive in the mail to my home. Until then, my temporary registration taped to the front window my DS had put in place before I arrived on delivery day is all I need.

I suggest you just keep pressure up with your Delivery Specialist if that is where your bottleneck is. Appears MO registration and licensing process is more involved than what owners have to deal with here in California. Good luck.

Took 45 days for me to get my registration and plates. Turns out that the DS hands off to their internal DMV team, who in their infinite wisdom, mailed off the application to the DMV at Richmond, Va (our state capital) instead of just going to the local DMV and standing in line. After 30 days I called to complain and my DS overnighted another set of temp tags. Another week later I threw an uncharacteristic hissy fit over email and copied everyone I knew at Tesla including ownership. The DMV team basically fetched the application back from Richmond and walked it over to the local DMV office. Voila. Two days later, registration and tags showed up in the mail.

I've leased/purchased 3 Porsches, two BMWs and an Audi in the last 10 years ... never once have I been given a vehicle with a temp tag. They all came with actual tags and registration. Tesla definitely needs to get their act in order. Quite the amateur hour I'd say.

Mine took 25 days to get to me. 30 day temps was cutting it close, but it came.

Well, it must vary a lot by state. In Texas we always get new cars with temp plate good for a couple of months until plates arrive, usually at the dealer, who then sends to us. CA also has the temp sticker in the front windshield for weeks before the plates arrive in the mail.

Took four weeks in CA for me. But they emailed all that I needed in case I got pulled over...which I did. Damn!

Remember that you are still legal 30 days PAST the expiration date of the temp tag. At least in Colorado.

mine's expired, my county told me i can't drive it until it's resolved, and tesla has told me to just keep driving it. This is ridiculous. This is our 4th straight delivery with huge problems.

I really don't understand this process at all. In Kentucky, you are required to register a new vehicle within 15 days of bringing it into the state. The Cincinnati Tesla store gave me a temporary Ohio tag that is good for 45 days. My DS has told me a couple of times now that it takes 3 weeks for Tesla to send me the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin, which is required to generate a Kentucky title and register the car.

How could it possibly take 3 weeks to generate paperwork saying that they produced this car and it has a lien on it from Alliant? It only took them 5 weeks to manufacture and ship the car to me. Alliant had the loan paperwork generated, finalized and signed in a couple of hours. But it takes 3 effin' weeks to generate an MCO and FedEx it to me? This delay actually causes Tesla owners to break the law (i.e., not registering the car within 15 days of importing it into the state). Granted, it is a trivial law with minimal consequences, but the process should not be allowed to force owners to break any law.

I had this problem too. Maryland temp tags last 45 days. I pinged my Delivery Associate at day 40 and said "hey, what gives" and they fedex'd it the next day. Based on my one anecdotal experience, I would guess that when you contacted them last week, they had completely forgotten and maybe MO needs a bit more lead time than MD did.

The original posts in this thread were from October 2015. I just decided to Necropost instead of creating a new thread, since I wanted to complain about the same thing as the OP in this thread.

Hearing some of the registration stories in this thread I felt I should share my experience. Tesla offered to direct ship my MS to me and I took them up on the offer. The car is expected to arrive in the next week or so. The registration/title info arrived via FedEx today. I stopped by the DMV and I now have transferred plates, a title schedule to arrive in the mail soon, and now I'm just waiting for my car to arrive. Way to go Tesla, thank you!
To those of you that have had experiences that were less than satisfactory, I wish you the best and a speedy delivery for your paperwork.

Chiming in on this. I live in TX and took delivery of the vehicle 2 weeks ago on 10/5. The paperwork to get it registered and such came in yesterday and I've sent it back in the provided FedEx envelope. I believe my temp plate lasts for another 3 weeks and I haven't been pulled over since my commute to work is short. I'm still a bit afraid, though they say to keep the receipt in the glove box in case I do get pulled over.
