Electric Vehicles are best in a Disaster

Here in LA I keep thinking about a Zero for getting around after the next earthquake. Now it looks like I am on the right track.

This just goes to show what I have been saying all along, the gasoline infrastructure is pretty fragile. I was usually thinking more along the lines of gas stations closing down due to high prices of oil and then gas stations going bust. Though it seems due to the high priority on getting electricity back it's usefull in a disaster as well.

As a matter of fact, if there's no electricity there's no gasoline either. Gas stations use electric pumps. During the Northeast Blackout of 2003 it was impossible to fill up your car.

but with your PV-panels on your roof, you can charge even during a blackout I guess!
Difficult doing that with an ICE!!!

The Roadster's battery could also power an average home for about 2 days. In Tokyo people could completely avoid the rolling blackout effecting some areas during daytime hours with a setup like that.

No production EV offers V2G yet.
And it doesn't seem like high power AC output is a common feature either. For now it seems your best plan is still solar panels with a bank of stationary batteries and a standalone inverter. Or maybe just an 'old school' gasoline or propane powered generator. EV powered houses are still just a 'science experiment' for now.

I went old school - in addition to the solar panels, I decided to have a propane generator wired into the system. I already have a large propane tank on my property, so it seemed like a good backup.
