[Buyers group] IEC 62196 (Mennekes) to J1772 cable (4m, 63A, single-phase)

Hi all,

I think most users here have been following the various threads about charging your Roadster on a public charging station. In the US most of these stations have a single-phase SAE J1772 connector, where Europe (NL, DE, UK and BE) are using mostly the IEC 62196 (also known as "Mennekes") connector.

While the connectors differ in format, the protocol they use is EVSE, the same as the Roadster talks to the UMC or HPC (please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Rumours go that Tesla will release a Tesla<>J1772 connector end of April or in May 2011, if so, we, as European Roadster users/drivers/owners will need a IEC62196 to J1772 cable.

These cables are available for the Nissan Leaf, but most of them are limited to 16A.

I've been e-mailing around to find a suiteable cable and I've come up with a Chinese supplier which can supply a cable which is able to handle 63A single-phase with on one end a J1772 connector and the other end a IEC 62196 cable.

The Chinese told me that they could deliver this cable for around $250,00 a piece, without shipping.

What I'm trying to do is gather a group of people who would want this cable, so I can get them from China.

I'd like to compile a list of people who would want such a cable, so I can see what I can do with the pricing and shipping.

I'll ship the cables to my home (NL) and from there on I'll send them to you guys.

The cable specs:

Length: 4m
Rating: 63A
Side 1: SAE J1772
Side 2: IEC 62196
Phases: 1 (J1772 is single-phase)

Just a thought: The spec can handle 70A in single phase mode (63A is for 3P) so you should make sure the cable can do 70A.

$250 is excellent though. There will be LEAF owners who want it at that price, for sure. I can think of 3 probables in the UK.
 
I'm interested.... please make sure that the supplier is prepared to CE mark the cable to avoid any issues you might have with the EU authorities (including getting it through customs).

About the 70A, as far as I know, no IEC 62196 station will support 70A, that max is 63A, single or three-phase. So 63A should be enough?
 
Except that a 63 or 70 Amp cable is total overkill for them with that puny 3.3kW charger, even 6.6kW. Just a lot heavier cable than they need to be carrying around. How much is Nissan gouging for their Type 2 to Type 1 cable?

The spec supports 70A so we may get stations that support it turning up.
 
this sounds really good coiht me in but yes make SURE (you want to see their CE certification papers and make sure they are theirs!) it is CE certified so there are no insurance problems being blamed on a non certified cable in an accidental event........ that would suck.
 
I also contacted the German supplier EV_de (forum user) suggested. They can't supply a 70A cable, their J1772 connector isn't 70A capable, they are limited to 32A.

They gave me a quote of EUR 375,00 per cable (excluding VAT). This is a 5m cable (coiled).

The Chinese haven't replied in the last few days, so not sure what's going on there.

J1772 is 80 amps max, but it's 240V AC, so 19.2kW max.

But I think dpeilow is right, for single phase you can use up to 70 amps for IEC 62196-2:
