After seeing the news of the opening of the Flight 93 National Memorial during the 9-11 news coverage last week, I noticed in my trip planning that the memorial's location in Shanksville, PA is only 20 miles or so from the Somerset, PA SuperCharger. This makes contemplation of a trip out to the memorial in the Fall, to catch a little of the foliage color, very practical. For anyone else interested, there is also a destination charger at the Lake Pointe Inn on Deep Creek Lake (about 65 miles from Shanksville) which is a great overnight location for anyone coming from WDC and looking to make a weekend of it.

They opened the new visitor center for the memorial. We did Hagerstown to Somerset via Shanksville in the spring without issue. That would be a nice drive for foliage.

I wrote this up as "the perfect detour" a while ago. It takes slightly longer-- just driving time, plus sightseeing-- but is otherwise range-neutral and well worth it. Just visited it on Tuesday -- came over from Hagerstown, then went to Somerset.
Very thorough and well done exhibit--highly recommend visiting both the new Visitor Center and the Plaza area below (probably best to drive and park nearer the Plaza than to take the hike down and then back up the hill).
There are tickets at the adjacent building, just walk up and the Ranger will give you one for the Visitor Center.
There are some momentos and books in that area.
They are continuing to complete construction Items and will be planting additional groves of trees.
Meadow areas currently have lots of wild flowers and chirping insects.
An exit road is built, but not yet completed or open for public access.
They did not have working indoor sinks (yet), they had foot pump models outside the Restroom areas, water was really cold.
