Supercharger - Bend, OR

Hi Lyon,
the supercharger map has had a "central Oregon" location listed for a long time. However, as of now there has been no indication that anything has happened. Sandy is now just beginning and there was no location ever listed on the Tesla map.

If you need a charge, you can use my NEMA 14-50 if you are traveling through.

I see on The Map that Tesla plans a Supercharger for the Bend area. Anyone have an info on this? Is listed as happing in 2015 and, well, time's a wasting!

Tesla thinks Bend is a Destination. They have destination chargers at a couple pricey hotels, but it seems that there is talk about a supercharger. About time!

I and some friends have often used Bend as a waypoint, to go EAST. As in toward Boise. There is only one group of towns between Bend and Ontario, OR / Boise ID, and that is BURNS, OR. They have in that small burg, at present, a 70 amp J plug.

It will be interesting if Tesla ever decides that Bend is just another stop on the way NorthEast. Not everyone wants to travel I-5 or travel the Pacific Coast to Seattle.

They may still be looking for a Bend location. Given that they're putting one in for those going to Mt. Hood to ski, I'm hoping they'll be adding one in Bend for the Bachelor crowd and for those venturing out into Eastern Oregon.

I've seen the Destination Charging plugs at Tetherow, The Riverhouse, The Oxford and at the Sunriver Lodge, any others I'm missing?

In general, Bend is a destination. Plus there is a chademo in redmond, or.

I would love to see them get serious about north/south travel on US 97. They have a start - Ellensburg, The Dalles (sort of, US197), proposed Bend. Then they need a couple more: Omak/Brewtser and Klamath Falls. The east side of the cascades is pretty amazing country with a lot to do in both summer and winter.

I live in Boise and really wanted to take the Tesla when we went to Bend last year, but at that time, there was no decently fast way to do it. There were no Superchargers along I-84 and the high amp station wasn’t in Burns yet (don’t have dual charger anyway), so the only charge option would have been a 14-50 at the RV park for about 3 hour stop. Now, there is a decent way to cross that. From Boise, you can go up to Baker City, Supercharge, and then you can go across through John Day and make it to Bend in one shot. From the West, that you’re talking about, you would probably want to Supercharge in Detroit Lake pretty full, top up in Bend for an hour or two, and then you could make it to Baker City. I think the River House lets people use their HPWC for a fee even if they are not guests of the hotel.

@Rocky_H:
Like PhilBa said, theres a Chademo in Redmond (its right in the middle of Fred Myers). That can charge your MS at 150 miles per hour. So 2 hours from empty to full. Also, there is two HPWC in Sunriver, and they are in the parking lot of one of the resorts and I use them all the time :)

Hopefully, Tesla follows these threads and realize the need for a SC along highway 97 is very real. We can "stretch" our 85D to make the run to Mt Shasta City but it's disheartening to be passed by Subaru's and 18 wheelers as we hold our speed to 55 or less to conserve charge. The "real" speed limit on highway 97 in Oregon has just been increased to 65 (from 55) and in the next months the new limit will be posted, making our limp along at 55 even more frustrating. The number of Tesla's in Central Oregon is growing exponentially and allowing an easier connection south will only help sales. There are a number of Destination Chargers in the area (Eagle Crest just added a DC) but a SuperCharger in Klamath Falls, LaPine, or Bend will help connect Central Oregon to the South.

Couldn't agree with you more.

Sounds like additional rationale. 2 things 1) have you sent this to TM directly? No guarantee this will be read on TMC, 2) sounds like SC is already planned for central Oregon (saves many hours at Sunriver for sure), though are you saying you need something/somewhere else in addition?

Thanks MikeBur.
1) Discussed with Tesla when we ordered our car, again with the DS when we picked it up and with service in Tigard last week. Additionally, our referral (takes delivery of a 90D in December) expressed interest in a CO SC when ordering his car. Is their a way to direct this to the correct individuals in Fremont?
2) The Destination Chargers in Sunriver, Tetherow, Bend, and Eagle Crest are great for tourists. Bend owners can make it south to Mt Shasta on a single charge. It's a real stretch to make it to Mt Shasta for owners in Sisters and Eagle Crest. Additionally, CA owners traveling to Eastern WA or Idaho must make an overnight stay at a DC.

Thanks MikeBur.

When I went from Shasta UP to Bend, I did 60 mph. I started with a full charge after overnighting at Shasta. I arrived at Bend with 40 miles of charge left.

Knowing this, I just bought a 90D so it won't be such a stretch.

And, just to be a little helpful, I and some friends put in a 70 amp (208 v) charger in Burns, halfway from Bend to Ontario, OR, where I usually stay overnight at a 14-50 motel and visit relatives. The Burns charger takes a while, yes, but it is at least there. There is also an RV park out of town. We go up to Spokane thru Walla Walla often.

HOPING for a supercharger there for a jump to Boise and Beyond! Many of us use Hwy 20 to go across to Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho.

Thanks roblab. Indeed the trip from Shasta to Bend is doable at 60 mph. However, the speed limit posted on the CA side is 65. OR just increased the limit in Oregon to 65 as well. Based on temperature, wind and weight this is a stretch for an 85 or 90. Especially so if you do not plan to overnight on the way. A SC in LaPine or Bend would make your trip thru Ontario much easier.

For the Boise to Bend drive, I figured the route we will probably use in the future. Once they got the Superchargers on I-84 done, I realized that I would prefer to just go from Boise up to Baker City, so I can Supercharge and then go West through John Day to Bend. The more direct route from Boise to Ontario and then straight West through Burns is about 40 miles shorter, but does have that slower charging stop to deal with. The slightly longer Supercharge-enabled route seemed preferable for my time tolerances. I might feel differently if I could get more charging speed from that 70A Burns one, but since I have a single charger, it is still just as slow as the RV park.

Thanks MikeBur.

Use multiple options to give TM feedback:
a) Pre-delivery use their Delivery specialist and/or NASales at TeslaMotors.com. Post delivery: ServiceHelpNA at Teslamotors.com They do take note of the interest here.
b) email them via: [email protected]
c) suggest a location via the web form at: Supercharging

hope this helps, Mike

Are you keeping your brown Sig.? Going to have a two Tesla family?

is anyone looking for permits? I have it on good authority that something should be rumbling construction wise by April. No pinpoint location though.

Oregon has a good statewide building permits database here. You can search by city or for ADK Electric under Name of Business. ADK is the contractor who has done most if not all of the Oregon superchargers to date. I didn't see anything when I checked just now.
