We seem to have many more people now looking into getting into an affordable Tesla. Waiting on the Model 3. Well, thats a few years away but a 50RWD could be here much sooner and start at $50k. Subtract the $7,500 and you're sitting at low $40ks with some high $30ks possible (right state or right inventory). Thats getting close to Chevy's bolt price but with far nicer car that can recharge much quicker at many more strategically placed stations for road trips.

And it doesn't look like a econobox.

And you can get future upgradable battery packs.

They initially had the S 40 RWD. The idea was the same rationale as you're positing. They wound up making them as software limited 60s, because almost nobody bought the 40s.

They wound up dropping the 60s, because less than 10% (rumour had it being in the range of 2%) of orders were 60s.

Since then we have a lot of aspiring model 3 owners. It might be close enough for them on price $50k (the 60 was 70k and now thats what a 70 costs). It seems like the company has went beyond that pre ownership ultra early adopter phase. They now have placed Superchargers allowing for a more praticle car then the city only (like it seemed at that time) 40.

The 60 got an upgrade and is now 1/3 of the cars sold. Maybe it's time for the 40 to get an upgrade. A 50 at 50k (42.5 after taxes) is my motto.

If they use them as loaners people could potentually get one for upper 30's when all said and done.

It would be interesting to take the Model S in CAD and make it a 2 door car; shrink it down in size in all dimensions; double stack the battery pack in the floor, and base model it and see what the price was like. How about the money difference between steel and aluminum?
