No extended warranty anymore

It's my understanding that they dropt it as no one was taking them up on it. I didn't opt for it myself as I figured that, after the initial bedding down period there wouldn't be too many surprises. Do you usual buy cars with the extended warranty option?

I wouldn't let the lack of an extended warranty be the only factor in you not getting a Roadster. I ended up getting the extended warranty but would have be ok without it as well. It's a great car and makes an important statement. I thin mpt is right, most things are likely to happen in the first 3 years. You'll be happy you got it, even without the extended warranty.
Are there 3rd party companies that will cover some sort of extended warranty? They're probably not cheap though.

I think getting an extended warranty of some sort is very important. You would be surprised how many of these cars have had major work within their first year of service. I can only imagine that as these cars age a lot more problems will pop up.

Many items have a failure rate curve that is known as a 'bathtub'. This describes a high initial rate, caused by manufacturing defects, followed by a long low period until, at the end, things begin to wear out. With any new product the biggest unknown is the length of time before the wear-out begins.

I was told by the Japan store rep. that most Japanese have indeed opted for the extended warranty. The thing I don't get though is even if most people were not opting for the extended warranty, it still is no reason to drop it! Dropping it is more work than keeping it since any printed material that mentions needs to be re-done, it needs to communincated to all the sales people that it is no longer offered, when that goes into effect, etc. Even the system they use to generate invoices (which seems to be some kind of Excel-based thing, at least the one in Tokyo is...) is going to need to get universally patched to get this option off the plate.

In fact, taking it a step further -- if nobody was opting for the extended warranty, it's better in a way for them that they still have it. Great marketing to say they have it, no fixes needed to take it off the plate, no people complaining on forums and people like Dragon cancelling their orders. So why then did they really take it off the plate? Good question!

I wonder how many spare body parts they're going to stock, for body work? If the tooling is gone... who will make replacement parts?

At least they have a big enough warehouse to stock the parts in now at the new Tesla factory!

What do you do if you buy a Tesla with no warranty, but you want to add it? I was told by Tesla that they don't offer warranties outside of the window when the car is first put into service. So if you wait too long or buy a used one, you need to get a third party insurance.

Has anyone had any luck with third party insurance for the Roadster?

My understanding is that all extended warranties are third party. It's more of an insurance product than a manufacturer product. This is based on consumer electronics and standard automobiles. Tesla Motors has been doing a few unique things, such as (apparently) offering their own leasing program, but there's no reason to believe that they're underwriting the entire extended warranty on their own. It's very likely that the original extended warranty is already managed by a third party. It would be interesting to simply get prices from extended warranty companies in various markets to see what the costs are.

In other words, I would not read a lot into this decision in terms of any attempt to gauge Tesla Motors' ability to actually repair Roadsters in the future. I believe that federal laws may require them to stand behind the vehicle to some extent, whether there is a warranty paying for the repairs or the customer must pay.

It would be great if someone with automotive industry experience would weigh in on what's normal.

Already inquired Tesla Belgium, but news from them so far.
Is this this warranty extension still available in all regions ?

Who has recently extended the warranty , in what region , and what was the cost ?

I purchased the Extended Service Agreement in September for $5,000. It is purchased directly through Tesla via the local service center.

I asked Tesla Belgium the same question Twice. They were not aware of the existence of the extended warranty. I would like to opt for it, but wasn't it 37 months OR 37000km? In the last case, I would end up paying $5k for 6 or 8 months of warranty as I use the Roadster a lot.
