No extended warranty anymore

I was told today by a Tesla representative, that they won't offer the 3 years extended warranty for additional 3.850 € anymore. This goes for Europe, don't know if it's the same for other countries.

This totally sucks.
I have to reconsider strongly buying a Roadster.

No, but I don't usually buy > 100.000 € electric cars with all new technology either. ;)
And since a minor fault like a defect ventilator, overheating the engine, would need the Tesla Ranger travel over 700 km and therefore cost me 700 € only for the trip, it would be nice to stay unaffected by that for 3 more years.

I wouldn't let the lack of an extended warranty be the only factor in you not getting a Roadster. I ended up getting the extended warranty but would have be ok without it as well. It's a great car and makes an important statement. I thin mpt is right, most things are likely to happen in the first 3 years. You'll be happy you got it, even without the extended warranty.
Are there 3rd party companies that will cover some sort of extended warranty? They're probably not cheap though.

I think getting an extended warranty of some sort is very important. You would be surprised how many of these cars have had major work within their first year of service. I can only imagine that as these cars age a lot more problems will pop up.

Many items have a failure rate curve that is known as a 'bathtub'. This describes a high initial rate, caused by manufacturing defects, followed by a long low period until, at the end, things begin to wear out. With any new product the biggest unknown is the length of time before the wear-out begins.

It's my understanding that they dropt it as no one was taking them up on it.

I was told by the Japan store rep. that most Japanese have indeed opted for the extended warranty. The thing I don't get though is even if most people were not opting for the extended warranty, it still is no reason to drop it! Dropping it is more work than keeping it since any printed material that mentions needs to be re-done, it needs to communincated to all the sales people that it is no longer offered, when that goes into effect, etc. Even the system they use to generate invoices (which seems to be some kind of Excel-based thing, at least the one in Tokyo is...) is going to need to get universally patched to get this option off the plate.

In fact, taking it a step further -- if nobody was opting for the extended warranty, it's better in a way for them that they still have it. Great marketing to say they have it, no fixes needed to take it off the plate, no people complaining on forums and people like Dragon cancelling their orders. So why then did they really take it off the plate? Good question!

benji4 brought it to the point.

I came to the (maybe wrong) conclusion that now they think they will lose money if they keep it. For me that means, the affidability of the car is not good. They now guess the average repair costs are above 4000 € after checking the first 3 years of Roadster lifetime. So at the end you can calculate to lose some thousand € (or $) for maintenance through year 4 to 6.

All in my humble opinion.

Received today a mail from Simon Rochefort, after I asked them if it's somehow possible to get the extended warranty in Europe.

Following my commitment to you, we had briefed our EU lawyers and specialists to continue working on the legal framework for the Warranty Extension. Unfortunately we had underestimated the complexity of this project on a EU-wide scale and this option is not an economically and legally viable option for Tesla at this time.

What do you do if you buy a Tesla with no warranty, but you want to add it? I was told by Tesla that they don't offer warranties outside of the window when the car is first put into service. So if you wait too long or buy a used one, you need to get a third party insurance.

Has anyone had any luck with third party insurance for the Roadster?

My understanding is that all extended warranties are third party. It's more of an insurance product than a manufacturer product. This is based on consumer electronics and standard automobiles. Tesla Motors has been doing a few unique things, such as (apparently) offering their own leasing program, but there's no reason to believe that they're underwriting the entire extended warranty on their own. It's very likely that the original extended warranty is already managed by a third party. It would be interesting to simply get prices from extended warranty companies in various markets to see what the costs are.

In other words, I would not read a lot into this decision in terms of any attempt to gauge Tesla Motors' ability to actually repair Roadsters in the future. I believe that federal laws may require them to stand behind the vehicle to some extent, whether there is a warranty paying for the repairs or the customer must pay.

It would be great if someone with automotive industry experience would weigh in on what's normal.

My Roadster warranty is expiring in april 2015. I would like to extend with three years.
Already inquired Tesla Belgium, but news from them so far.
Is this this warranty extension still available in all regions ?

Who has recently extended the warranty , in what region , and what was the cost ?

I asked Tesla Belgium the same question Twice. They were not aware of the existence of the extended warranty. I would like to opt for it, but wasn't it 37 months OR 37000km? In the last case, I would end up paying $5k for 6 or 8 months of warranty as I use the Roadster a lot.
